Description/Reviews
Infused with apocalyptic video game soundscaping and zappa-esque freak outs, the record holds fourteen brilliant compositions. High tensions weave an ocean of cinematic direction through the liquid sound of guitar and keys. Switching from a very gyrative momentum, reminiscent of Feuding Fathers to a poppy straight forward 80′s song structure, the album is full of extreme musicianship, tranquil breakdowns and a unique sax duo, underlining a counter influence. I love the loose but mechanical grooves made jazzy and swung into a whole different realm. The tracks really transition from tropical and steel drum inspired phrasing to slightly discorded rock riffs. The slight improvisational sections make for some great textural experimentation from all instruments. The composure involved in having a 7 piece band has a lot of maturity and thoughtful, considerate playing. The record seems to jump from math to jazz, track by track. Songs like Barfle attain more avant jazz stylings and some wild disjunctive syncopated shredding. Magic Purple Banana and Ade’ exploit a more laid back version of Enemies and a post-world sound. People looking for fatter bass and a more noisy chaotic sound may enjoy Ms Hallway and 3 Variations of Vertigo . Most of their songs make the listener contemplate where the record is going and keeps one closely in-tune with the small and intricate subtleties. Undoubtingly being quite diverse when compared to other instrumental acts, it’s a record to test your own appreciation and limits. What is pop to you? (dontspreadbullshitspreadmusic.com)
