Coming in with a whopping 15 tracks, “Bydyra” is composed of two original mini musicals that were written specifically for a local children’s school in Oslo. It is a unique work that explores the relatively “grown up” subjects of urban wildlife, the skyrocketing prices of housing in Oslo, the financial crisis, social issues, global warming, and good and bad magic.
With “Bydyra” TUSMØRKE have succeeded in blending their unique take on Prog Rock with a substantial dose of humour to create an album that will be enjoyed equally by both children, who will be enchanted by the characters and their adventures, and by adults, who will succumb to the psychedelic prog folk overtones. It is a journey filled with magical creatures that serve to charm and educate at the same time.

With its flute-y opening ‘Et Djevelsk Mareritt’ sounds like a fairytale, whilst ‘De Reiser Fra Oss’ has got some super groove courtesy of vintage synths. And whilst I may not know what they say the lyrics combine with it to make something that at times sounds super 80s. In fact that flute keeps cropping up time and again to lead you away like the Pied Piper. ‘Spurvehauken’ could be off a stage play, and the somehow-catchy ‘Nordmarka’ makes feet tap and bodies sway, especially when the bass gets a-going. And there’s whistling.

May 2014 sees the dark minstrels return with a sophomore album ”Riset Bak Speilet” (”The Birch Behind The Looking Glass”). A 50-minute transmission from the heart of the darkest northern forests, the album skillfully channels the spirit of classic British acid folk rock and soaks it in a black witches cauldron. The spellbinding concoction is at times reminiscent of classic acts like Jethro Tull and Incredible String band, and also not entirely far off from modern forest magicians such as Hexvessel and Wolf People.
”Time is an illusion when the music of Tusmörke is played: it ceases to exist. The listener loses her grip, our knowledge no longer stems from social media or printed newspapers: everything the modern world has made us believe, evaporates. Our ears grow into cones, blood turns thin.”

...Right off the bat, I hear a lot of Jethro Tull and a tiny bit of Caravan/Gong ... This album seriously sounds like it’s straight out of the 70’s ... Overall, Underjordisk Tusmørke is a solid piece of progressive music. If you’re interested in something folky and uniquely Scandinavian, you’ve found the right album. I might not recommend this to everybody, but I can safely say that Scandinavia has once again given the listening public a well-made musical recording. Give it a try!
