Description/Reviews
Ignoring the conventional wisdom of leaving your longest song until the end, the band throws you in at the deep end with the epic fourteen-minute ‘Katana – The Moths and the Dragonflies/Katana – Mud’. Portentous horns are quickly followed by huge riffs and pounding drums, spoken word passages, and sensational guitar solos. Far Eastern melodies are backed by guttural roars, black metal shrieks and quasi-operatic vocals as the hugely ambitious opener sounds like Blind Guardian and Nevermore spent five years in Japan with Sigh as their tour guide.

Description/Reviews
Combining electronic soundscapes, acoustic instrumentation and unexpected rhythms, Late Night Laments is a tightly focused and emotionally charged entry in Bowness’s increasingly impressive solo catalogue.
Contrasting with the sensuous beauty of the music, the frequently dark lyrical themes include meditations on generational divides, ideologically motivated violence, social exclusion, and a much-loved children’s author’s mental breakdown.

Tosin Abasi - guitar (8)
Areni Agbabian - vocals (2)
Artyom Manukyan - cello (2)
Beth and Steve Wood - backup vocals (9)
Varduhi Art School Children's Choir (7)

Description/Reviews
While Tigran’s complex rhythmic patterns and unfamiliar time signatures, with their origin in Armenian folk and dance music with a splash of prog-metal, provoke glee and fascination with young “Time Lords”, there is, thankfully, far more to his music than mind-bending technical virtuosity and precision.  Tigran seems to operate on a spiritual plane transcending the usual physical limits of instruments (think Mahavishnu or late Coltrane) - in his words “where the moment of the unconscious creation is the way to feel conscious”.

Taskaha "Taskaha"

Country: Norway
Genre(s): Progressive Rock
Format: digital
Release date: August 28, 2020
Tracklist
1. Mind Date (8:47)
2. Distressed (5:24)
3. Reframe! (6:14)
4. Daylight's Fading (8:35)
5. Invisible (5:13)
6. Eden (8:31)

Total Time 66:24

Line-up
Rick Holmen - Vocals
Stian Dahl - Guitars
Simen Hanssen - Guitars
David van Dort - Bass
Ole Martin Svendsen - Drums

Description/Reviews
Taskaha’s sound is as often heavy as it is delicate. The band will take you through a journey of varied soundscapes unapologetically, without ever descending into gratuitous odd time signatures or technical showcasing that so frequently infest this genre of Metal. Borrowing from musical styles as diverse as Fusion Jazz, Blues Rock, and Classical, there’s something here for everyone to love.
There are plenty of straight rock-out moments with a touch of blues like in the first track “Mind Date” that never entirely abandon Prog territory but dare paint outside the lines, not unlike Dream Theater’s last collaboration with an outside producer in Falling Into Infinity. But there’s always very fragile moments, like in the 13-minute epic “The Climb,” and gloomy, Doom Metal inspired self-reflection in Daylight’s Fading. The band’s exploration of other styles runs deep, as showcased in “Eden” which delves into Art Rock with its Classical Music style arpeggios almost as if made for being played in a concert hall on a classical acoustic.

Description/Reviews
At the center of this album is a long 5 part piece featuring some of the most radical stuff the band has done on record in a while, but if the prospect of a 42minute piece for ballet inspired by paintings, alchemy and the tarot seems too daunting, there is also a handful of losely related shorter songs to get into.

Marco Ahrens - Guitars (2,10)
Inés Vera-Ortíz - Vocals (5)

Description/Reviews
Musically, Assignment strays little from past recordings, playing aggressive progressive power metal. Between the sharp riffage, roaring rhythm section, and Valdez' assertive, often raging, vocals, some Assignment songs can be distilled to three adjectives: fast, heavy, and intense. You'll certainly hear this with Mercyful Angel, Obsession, or Submission, by example. But Assignment can also mix things up. A song like Unknown Hero turns more upon progressive metal rather than racing power metal, and also offers some fine piano moments and symphonic synths.

Description/Reviews
As an instrumental trio, Titan to Tachyons are not constrained by such subgenre designations, and while certainly heavy, they venture quite far afield right from the start. Album opener “Morphing Machineminds” is a thoroughly mashed-up take on metal and jazz, with an unmistakable nod to the kind of psychedelia that informs their sci-fi inspirations. The riffs are heavy, but they swing, fusing the doomy groove of Black Sabbath’s “Into the Void” with Pink Floyd’s “Astronomy Domine.” But this quickly gives way to slinky avant-noir guitar work, before the heaviness returns just as swiftly with an oddly-timed sludge riff. This is challenging music, though a head-nodding groove is nevertheless omnipresent.

Bolstered by a dynamic cast of musicians, the album is a blistering fusion of progressive rock meets world music. Having honed his songwriting and playing through Broken Parachute’s latest progressive-rock disk <Living Dangerously>, Taylor has pushed on with his calling to bridge musical styles in new and inventive ways. You’ll find rhythms and melodies inspired by India, the Middle East and Latin America supporting the dynamic interplay of guitars, keyboards, drums and vocals. ARTEFACT is edgy, path breaking music that calls to mind the vibrant energy of the early Santana disks.

Description/Reviews
We’re met at the door by “The Wedge”, an all-out humid slap of psych rock improv of the highest order. It starts out in 5th gear and never lets up. Spaced-out synth, Hendrix-ian guitar squall, and some major drum power drive this track until the tires fall off. Dual guitars, dual keys, organ, bass, drum, and percussion give this song the feel of the Monterey Pop Festival circa ’68, with just a touch of Detroit City chug. We quickly drop down a gear or two with the exquisite “Pauly’s Pentacles”, a searing and simmering slow burn of a track that sounds like a cross between Vincebus Eruptum, Dark Magus, and Bernie Worrell freaking out over both.

‘phenomena’ has all the hallmarks of previous ESP albums with alluring melodies and stirring arrangements. Tony’s guitar and synth play haunting themes, weaving over symphonic rock at its most dramatic and uplifting, all interspersed with strange altering scenes and soundtracks that suggest dark and fascinating interiors to this music. ‘phenomena’ is rhythmic and captivating yet strong and hopeful in all the right places.
