Description/Reviews:
The rhythms on the album are very good and rather diverse. “Bad Brain” is a great melodic adventure that brings plenty of unique riffs, some complexity and a lot of mood. It takes you on a musical trip many instrumental offerings generally fail to do. I can enjoy some great guitar playing as a fellow player, but compose a fucking song and don’t wank the whole song ya know? Sam brings a lot of that and it’s good more players are riff/composition focused, and not littering their songs with endless guitar solos.

Filipe Baldaia: Guitars
   With
Einar Solberg (Leprous) (1)
Angel Vivaldi (9)
Steffen Kummerer (9)
Merethe Soltvedt (5, 9)

Description/Reviews:
metanoia sets off with the opulent opener “Katabasis”, drawing dramatic, cinematic soundscapes mixed with electronic influences. The soft, clear vocals of Marc Martins alternate with sharp growls and pierce through constantly changing riffs. PERSEFONE balances soft passages with intense walls of sound on tracks like “Aware of Being Watched” – in which clean vocals and jazzy sections alternate with intense riffing carried by dense drumming – while solid, rich sound takes on orchestral dimensions on songs such as “Leap of Faith”. Vivid and dynamic instrumentation, tempo and rhythm make up the intense ride “Merkabah”, showcasing the band’s hardest yet most vulnerable sides as screams and blast beats are followed by soft instrumentation – spanning the song’s intensity to its maximum. A special surprise is the 11-minute masterpiece “Consciousness Pt. 3”, which continues a series of songs from the band’s fourth album Spiritual Migration (2013). The album closes with another opulent set of songs, “Anabasis Pt. 1”, “Anabasis Pt. 2” and “Anabasis Pt. 3”. “Anabasis Pt. 1” starts off with calm, dreamy piano sounds, drifting over to the intense “Anabasis Pt. 2” and leading seamlessly into “Anabasis Pt. 3”, gently closing the album with a cinematic outro."
metanoia is an atmospheric and gloomy journey through rich soundscapes. The bands crosses genre boundaries with ease and creates their own cosmos, mesmerizing the listener with a high variety of songwriting and technical precision and proving PERSEFONE’s worthy position in the genre of extreme progressive metal

Dessiderium "Aria"

Country: USA
Genre(s): Progressive Metal
Label: Artisan Era
Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: December 10, 2021
Tracklist
1. White Morning In A World She Knows (15:13)
2. Pale (10:59)
3. Aria (13:41)
4. Moon Lust Delirium (9:15)
5. The Persecution Complex (11:26)

Total Time 60:34

Line-up
Alex Haddad - Vocals, all instruments
   Except
Brody Smith - Drum programming

Description/Reviews:
Between the acoustic meandering and melancholic clean vocals that introduce the opening track “White Morning in a World She Knows,” I initially thought that Aria was to be a slab of obvious Opeth worship. As the proceedings blossom into colorful symphonic prog in the Native Construct vein, and later into a dense bout of blackened Krallice riffs, this comparison became an afterthought. In the tradition of Aquilus and Wilderun, Dessiderium uses their Opeth affinity as a platform for reaching higher ambitions. What sets Aria apart from many of its contemporaries, however, is its uniquely optimistic tone. Dessiderium largely eschews minor scales in favor of a more traditionally melodic palette. It doesn’t necessarily sound “happy” in a power metal way, but its atmosphere of adventure and sage acceptance is colorful in a way most extreme metal bands can’t touch.

Description/Reviews:
Like many modern extreme metal bands, Pennsylvanian ensemble Rivers of Nihil have been steadily integrating more progressive elements and clean singing into their habitually vicious formula. 2018’s Where Owls Know My Name was an excellent example of that, and unsurprisingly, follow-up The Work goes even further in terms of balancing heavy and light elements amidst its laudable conceptual scope and emphasis on reprised motifs.

Description/Reviews:
The music does have its fair share of hard edges, but it often has as much in common with hard rock and progressive rock as it does with extreme metal. And thus the songs include a range of vocals, from high, soaring song to ferocious growls, and savage snarls. The songs also incorporate shifting tempos and changing moods. They include darting and jolting riffs and fervent solos, neck-cracking snare beats and hard-charging gallops, but also stately cadences and soulful melodies.

Description/Reviews:
... this album is actually more music than extreme metal, if that makes sense. From the beginning you’re assaulted by a massive wall of sound with impactful riffing and punch but it doesn’t take long to notice the genuinely beautiful, haunting melody that comes along with it. There’s an entire structure of layered tremolo picking guitars, harmonizing and it’s just an absolute treat to try to follow and keep track of where each one is going and how they complement each other in an impeccably puzzled soundscape. … Now we get to the second component of this album’s sound, which is heavily relying on silence. The driven guitars disappear. The grinding stops and the acoustic elements take hold. There’s so much acoustic guitar, there’s piano, clean guitar with lots of delay and incredibly clever samples to support these instruments and properly immerse you into the atmosphere.

Rob Berry - Piano (8)

Description/Reviews:
Veil of Imagination is an exceptional demonstration of metal embracing the sublime. With their debut and sophomore albums, Wilderun established themselves as one of the most exciting young voices in modern progressive metal, blending the grandiosity of folk and symphonic metal with the sonic depth of melodeath. There were clear parallels with Opeth and Wintersun, along with a host of other folk and pagan metal mainstays like Eluveitie, Ensiferum, Equilibrium, and so on. And yet, Wilderun still established their own identity, which they’ve developed further on Veil of Imagination. It’s their most fully-realized version of this formula and reaches cinematic heights you might hear on a Devin Townsend album. It’s a stunning, gorgeous exercise in prog metal songwriting that will surely make its mark long after this year.

Country: Sweden
Genre(s): Progressive Metal
Label: Agonia Records
Format: CD, digital, vinyl

Tracklist:
1. Black Storm (7:23)

Total Time 50:26

Line-up:
Tobias Netzell – Vocals, Guitars
Björn Pettersson – Guitars, Vocals
Tim Nedergård – Guitars
Sebastian Svalland – Bass
Joakim Strandberg Nilsson – Drums

Description/Reviews:
It sounds like In Mourning are really on a listening kick of anything Dan Swanö-related, Opeth, and a lot of the doomier/groovier more black’n roll side of things (Khold and maybe a little bit of Enslaved come to mind). As I hear it, opener “Black Storm” is a majestic piece of progressive black metal with a ’70s flair, and it’s a fantastic opening to a pretty expansive album.
Other songs like the sort of ’70s take on Death’n Roll thrasher “Hierophant” demonstrate just how weirdly In Mourning are willing to pull together their various tangled musical threads to make something feel complex and all their own in ethos alone. Even songs you might argue are more traditionally In Mourning, like “Huntress Moon”, are more about an oppressive sense of melancholy conveyed in a much more aggressive manner. Instead of being a wall of sound that just washes over you, the heavier songs are torrents of layered melodic tapestries backed by constant blast beats.

Is not the type of metal I’m used to listen, this band is really peculiar, but in a good way, they manage to make lots of truly melodious combinations on this album, from calmly clean guitars, to distorted potent ones followed by rhythms that are actually catchy. I can clearly hear the inspiration of Opeth here.

Description/Reviews:
‘Spellbound’ is centered around the life and work of  influential filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Each of the 11 songs included in  the album traces the plot of a Hitchcock movie, including masterpieces  such as ‘Frenzy’, ‘Notorius’, ‘The Birds’ and of course ‘Psycho’, all  with a very distinctive Sadist twist that make them stand out.  Musically, ‘Spellbound’ is one the band’s heaviest and darkest albums to  date, but the Progressive and Death Metal influences that fans of the  band have learned to love are still intact.

Description/Reviews:
The epic title track announces its intentions via an atmospheric acoustic piano and strings soundscape that perfectly compliments the fantastically nautical themed cover art. Around the two-minute mark, an angular, harmonic minor guitar-led transition chockfull of synchronous hits and double-kick drums breaks the song open. Moving through a wide array of metallic styles, “The Sirens” highlights the band’s ability to seamlessly blend a mix of power, death and progressive influences into a single package. This is characteristic of the best progressive metal bands, particularly ones on the more extreme end of the spectrum, but I’ve always thought that Into Eternity’s focus on melodic fist-raising power-metal inflected choruses was the rug that really tied the room together.
