The result this time around is less classic prog and closer to an American black midi, Squid, or The Smile: Ever-changing rhythms, sometimes angular or heavy, with a maximalist texture and emotional core. All four band members' personalities shine through for a true group effort. Longtime collaborators guitarist/vocalist Jake Rose and bassist Dominique Reveneau continue their vision of music with complex yet groovable rhythms and a love of 80s post-punk as well as 70s prog. Keyboardist Salvador Altamirano-Farrell has one of the largest rigs you can fit on stage while not being named Rick Wakeman including three tiers of keys and loves all things synth and organ. This album also marks the first recorded appearance of fourth member, drummer Connor Reilly, known for his muscular and dexterous playing on albums by The Mercury Tree, Greco Bastian, and Ventifacts, among others.

... an experimental wall of sound that is heavy and guitar-driven, but orchestral in arrangement. The music is an amalgam of experimental, progressive, and math rock where finding a 4/4 time signature is like a scavenger hunt. There is a balance between structured parts and improvisation, control and chaos that toes the line; listening is a lot like playing the songs, there is a sense of barely being able to hang on. Stylistic touchpoints can be varied and classic like 60s Pink Floyd and Beach Boys and Mahavishnu Orchestra, often within the same song, or more akin to young progressives black midi, Squid, and Young Jesus.

Description/Reviews: 

Rainbow Face proudly carry the banner of progressive rock while treading the waters of experimental rock and post-punk. As their name suggests, Rainbow Face constantly bombard you with musical colors as a galaxy of timbres, sounds, and styles swirl throughout each of the eight tracks on their debut album, Stars' Blood.
The centerpiece track, Waves, is a 12 minute, multi-movement suite that moves effortlessly between psychedelic ballad, dark and heavy Red era King Crimson riffage, to something out of an Elfman score. Elsewhere, on Purgatory and The Fighter Pilot, the band is more aggressive, showing the influence of angular math rock and post-punk. Pirates, the 6 minute album opener, with lush Mellotron and jangly guitar, harkens back to early Pink Floyd. Throughout the album's near fifty minute run time, Rainbow Face slip effortlessly through meters, modes, and genres while retaining a consistent tone as the lyrics hit on themes of isolation, paranoia, fear of technology, and mental illness.
