Tracklist:

Description/Reviews:
Sorxe’s brand of sludge metal has always been a compelling one. On this latest album the band’s psychedelic and experimental mix of post-metal and sludge returns to the territories of their debut album more than their second album did, and overall manages to mix the strengths from both into a cohesive and engrossing whole.

Snow Burial "Ostrava"

Country: USA
Genre(s): Post Metal
Label: Prosthetic Records
Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date:  September 20, 2019
Tracklist:
1. Tyranny (3:01)
2. Sever The Bloodline (5:14)

4. Třinec (1:11)
5. Ostrava (3:17)

8. The Lost (4:10)
9. The Unforgiven (5:02)

Total Time 35:08

Line-up:
Ben
Brandon
Nick

Description/Reviews:
Born from their defining experiences at home and on the road the unifying theme of Ostrava is one of duality - failure and triumph, celebration and mourning, isolation and family. The precarious balance of their lives are laid out across the nine tracks in Ostrava; the costs of glory given equal billing to meditative contemplation and blazing riffs. The complexities of modern life and politics weigh heavily and color the narrative of the album. The result is a compelling collection of songs that resonate universally, with equal parts grief and gratitude bundled up into digestible chunks of post-metal fury.
The headbangability of each track belies the complexities of the layers that lurk beneath. Taking inspiration from the likes of Radiohead as much as any metal act; SNOW BURIAL craft polished songs with the whirring machinery hidden just below the surface. Their blend of melody and aggression delivers a sound that dredges the depths of doom and sludge and marries it with rock ‘n’ roll sensibilities.

Keegan Ferrari: Bass
Kirk Witt: Guitar, Vocals
   With
Jørgen Munkeby: Saxophone (9)

Description/Reviews:
Make no mistake, this is a weird and nearly unclassifiable little record that pairs heavy modern progressive rock with new wave/post punk, seemingly inspired by the likes of Tears for Fears and The Cure, and touches of jazz and electronica, and somehow makes that insane fusion of styles work. It’s also, for the most part, a lean and mean album chock full of insanely catchy hooks and riffs, and widescreen soundscapes, that, just when you think you have the measure of it, throws curveballs like saxophone solos played by the likes of Jørgen Munkeby.

1. Upended (6:48)
2. Obstinate Pace (5:42)
3. Let Fall (5:21)
4. Intermezzo (1:04)
5. Midway (5:54)
6. Chant Of Stillness (4:28)
7. Descent To Light (5:24)
8. Dysphoria (2:57)

Total Time 37:38

Line-up:
Jason McMaster (WatchTower, Dangerous Toys) - vocals
Davide Tiso (Ephel Duath) - guitars, bass, ukulele
Hannes Grossman (Necrophagist, Obscura) - drums
   With
Bruce Lamont (Yakuza, Corrections House) - baritone saxophone (1, 2)
Kevin Hufnagel (Gorguts, Dyshythmia) - guitar solo (1, 5)
Fester (Burials, Humorous) - guitar solo (3)
Fabian Vestod - drums (8)

Description/Reviews:
The end product might not immediately make sense to everyone. The melodies are weird, yet conventional somehow. The drumming is distincly in the style of Hannes’s technical work, but the production is like old-school avant-garde. And the singing, Jason Mcmaster’s voice is power metal gone weird. The band somehow skirt the line between familiar enough to be cheesy and bizarre enough to be “too much”, yet don’t fall into either trap. Instead, they’re consistently unsettling while being oddly listenable. The uncomfortable place the listening experience puts one in is exactly the reason why this album is so brilliant. I’ve went in circles trying to convey that feeling, but in the end it’s hard to put to words. Which is why you should go listen to Howling Sycamore right now. It’s the cleverest album of the month and while still being so fun to listen to. (heavyblogisheavy.com)

Description/Reviews:
One of Without Waves’ self-proclaimed unique selling points is that their music is pretty hard to pin down. After just a few tracks into their newest release Lunar, I’d say it’s a pretty fair assessment, both by the band and by their fans and critics alike. It’s certainly a bold claim as well, as I’d be initially sceptical of any band that boasts the ability to blend to an agreeable degree musical genres such as jazz fusion, progressive metal, atmospheric rock – but it’s immediately apparent that Without Waves have executed it in a splendid manner.

Description/Reviews:
Junius are one of those bands that are so damn consistent. But they are not complacent. In fact, their new album “Eternal Rituals for the Accretion of Light” not only maintains that prog-gaze (I just made that up) style they have always had but it adds a few new wrinkles to keep things fresh.

This Family is also a prog band but play some very heavy prog metal along the lines of Mastodon, Anciients, Baroness and The Ocean. ... Merging Remission-era Mastodon with Crack the Skye-era Mastodon might actually be a fair description.

Etienne Vazquez -Guitar

First Light Orchestra

Description/Reviews:
Every aspect of the opening track, "Yesteryear," is the epitome of what the group represents: chaos complimenting melodies, unapologetic black metal screams, and a ravishing orchestral backing. Compositionally, the piece progresses in a wave of three dynamic peaks before steadily transitioning right into "Hereafter." A continual arpeggiated riff becomes coated in suspenseful layers of string accompaniments and percussion while the remaining minute is embellished in a whimsical atmosphere. The harmonies and rhythms within "Relinquish" flourishes in their unique pacing and thick coatings of choral chants.

  9. Skywatcher 05:14
Line-up:
Bridge Lavaizar - guitars, vocals
James Dunham - drums
Dave Soucy - bass

Description/Reviews:
A rollercoaster is an apt metaphor for the ride Force Rise the Sun took me on; it’s also an apt metaphor for the atmospheric soundscape that InAeona so effortlessly creates. The tracks grab you by the collar with poppy-synth, lift you up with soaring, spacey vocals, and then send you crashing down with crushing and bombastic low-end rhythms. Their sound belongs somewhere on a spectrum between post-rock and industrial metal, somewhere between the late 1990s/early 2000s and contemporary music scene. Are they space post-metal? Are they alternative industrial metal? Are they trance metal (thank you to fellow writer Jesse Almeida for that genre suggestion)? Regardless of genre-labels, I can guarantee that their sound is unlike anything you’ve heard this year.

Tempel "The Moon Lit Our Path"

Genre(s): Instrumental Post Metal, Black Metal
Label: Prosthetic Records
Format: CD, vinyl, digital
Release date: June 16, 2015
Tracklist:
  1. Carvings in the Door 08:21
  2. The Moon Lit Our Path 09:33
  3. Descending into the Labyrinth 12:19
  4. Tomb of the Ancients 09:58
  5. Dawn Breaks Over the Ruins 12:03
Line-up:
Ryan Wenzel - guitars, keyboard
Rich Corle - drums

Description/Reviews:
With only one year between releases, it would be easy to mistakenly assume that Tempel's new LP, The Moon Lit Our Path, wouldn't be as fierce as their debut. Thankfully, not only does the album attain the same heights of bestial, post-metal wizardry, but it also utilises more changes and subtle instrumentation. The Moon Lit Our Path also lends itself more to narrative, often placing the listener in the parched desert that Tempel calls home.
The album opens with 'Carvings In The Door.' After Wenzel encircles you with thick guitar notes and a haze of eerie synth, he and Corle launch into a grooving, black metal assault. Wenzel's guitar tone is both tar-soaked and defined, allowing each riff to bear its venomous teeth. Pushed by Corle's mercuric drumming, Tempel unleashes a thrashing flood, after which they deftly traverse into Entombed-style death rock. All of this happens in the first quarter of this 8:22 composition; and the remainder is equally stunning.

Hearing a band that blends ambient and atmospheric textures with frantic prog-metal creates a sort of paradox. It’s contradictory in its nature. But that is exactly what White Arms of Athena have set their hearts on creating for their self-titled album.
