Description/Reviews:
As is likely evident by now, Holopainen’s achievement lies in mining the strengths of each singer even while working within the context of these original songs. It’s Holopainen’s own material, yes, but it also delivers a kind of “greatest hits” vibe in terms of the sonic signature of its star vocalists.

Josh Packard - cello (4)

Description/Reviews:
Jack O’ The Clock’s Leaving California is a highly-detailed musical adventure that reveals new layers with repeated listens, from the opening strums of “Jubilation,” which introduces the record with whimsical folksy fanfare, to the angular harmonized violin lead on the closing track, “Narrow Gate.” Throughout, the songs of bandleader Damon Waitkus recall artists such as David Sylvian, Fairport Convention, and Elliott Smith, while creative musical arrangements showcase the band’s high-level compositional and instrumental chops. Upon first listen, Leaving California offers plenty of hooks, but this is music that truly reveals its depth upon the scrutiny of repeated spins.

Katja Flintsch - Violin, Viola (5-7)

Description/Reviews:
One To Zero is lush and airy at the same time. It is intellectual, yet entertaining. The riffs, the solos, the interplay, und last but not least the lyrical depth, are all the complex culmination of a mere idea that was unfolded and magnified into epic proportions. One to Zero fits well into these times, in which tech billionaires name their child X AE A-XII, or the often dystopian 'Black Mirror' is a mainstream hit series. That is only logical, given the actual reality that that we all live in. One To Zero was conceived in the Farm Studios in Freising/Bavaria und the careful supervision and production of Kalle Wallner and Yogi Lang, who also mixed the album.

Description/Reviews:
Derev seeks to combine western progressive rock with the Arabic and Armenian heritage of its two founder members (mixing worldwide ingredients with local recipes)... This debut (mini) album is short, but with a rich variety. It showcases a talented group of musicians who are still exploring a range of linked, but different, sound palettes. I think they could well be onto something, if they can focus their compositions and style with some stronger hooks. Leap Of Faith is a strong opening statement and is a recommended listen for those musical culinary types, who enjoy songs that mix and blend influences from different cultures.

Description/Reviews:
Album 3 is the first half of a Rock Opera adaptation of the 1910 book by Harold Bell Wright called The Uncrowned King. This story is an allegory in the style of The Pilgrim's Progress but with a story arch of Twain's Prince and the Pauper meets Dicken's Christmas Carol. A pilgrim on a search for Truth arrives at the Temple of Truth with questions about the journey. In answer, the Keeper of the Temple retires him to The Quiet Room, overlooking The Beautiful Sea, where he is visited by the The Four Voices of Life. Each Voice tells him a piece of a story entitled "The Uncrowned King", to give answer to his questions. Broken into two releases, the story is an allegory on the nature of truth. It is a statement that real truth cannot be derived solely by the senses, but it is more transcendent and one must be courageous in its pursuit and consequence.

Description/Reviews:
Four piece post-rock band from Kassel, Germany Rædsel release Menetekel which is not a conventional post-rock album. Menetekel sheds light on the compatibility of complex and putatively simple music. The music combines complex elements of progressive rock/progressive metal and accessibility and catchiness of modern rock songs concerning the instrumental approach and the song structures.

Description/Reviews:
Boasting ten new songs which encompassing nearly fifty-five minutes of material, Mountain Fever push the balance between pioneering experimentalism to our own take on modern pop culture and its manifestation in the Middle East. Revealing an album composed of African and Balkan brass sections, Arabic violins, extended vocal techniques, and several special guest appearances, watch out for radio friendly hooks that emerge out of heavy riffs and polychromatic arrangements.

Vokonis "Odyssey"

Country: Sweden
Genre(s): Progressive Metal
Label: the Sign Records
Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: May 7, 2021
Tracklist
1. Rebellion (3:17)
2. Odyssey (8:54)
3. Blackened Wings (4:04)
4. Azure (3:50)
5. Hollow Waters (7:49)
6. Through The Depths (12:48)

Total Time 40:42

Line-up
Simon Ohlsson - Vocals and Guitars
Jonte Johansson - Vocals and Bass
Peter Ottosson - Drums and Percussion
Per Wiberg (Spiritual Beggars, Kamchatka, Opeth) - Keyboards

Description/Reviews:
The title track is where we see the next twist to Vokonis‘ sound, as a Hammond organ swirls and churns into being. Per Wiberg (Spiritual Beggars, Kamchatka, ex-Opeth) is the honored guest on Odyssey, contributing impeccable organ and Mellotron arrangements on four songs. His presence lends the songs an air of majestic 70s prog that fits the expanded songwriting perfectly. Tempo changes allow the band to intersperse contemplative, slower moments with hard-hitting riff-centric driving passages. This is highly effective on closing numbers “Hollow Waters” and “Through the Depths,” which add up to nearly twenty-one minutes of heavy progressive rock that is catchier than it has any right to be. These songs have a hint of melancholy about them at times, but the arrangements are such that we are drawn into each song as if under a spell.

Description/Reviews:
Conceived and recorded over a few years with outstanding musicians and special guests, Bernardo Lanzettiʼs new work is presented as a collection of musical episodes that sail from Progressive Rock to Avant Guard, making port of call at Modern Opera, Art Rock, Rock & Soul and Classix 2 B. Eight songs in English plus an Italian text for the song "Ero un num Ero”, built on an elementary and random numerical progression as if to point out that the so-called “inspiration”, at times, can only be a fairy tale to deceive the unwary listener. Without exaggerating or forcibly imposing his vocal range exceeding three octaves, the vocalist makes available the complete range of his voice, including the one processed by his Glovox device and those written for a choir that, in "Different", move on articulated bars, always different in their division and imperceptibly delusional succession. In the album, passion, detached nostalgia, fury and irony unfold track after track with a mix of sounds that are as unpredictable as they are effective.

Description/Reviews:
70 minutes of energetic and incredibly diverse material- though still very much recognizable as Kayak. The tracks on the album could hardly be more diverse, showing Kayak’s broad musical horizon, while still deeply rooted in prog. Moving ballads, adventureous epics, solid rock and sophisticated melodies- it’s all there, and more.

Description/Reviews:
A totally unique record, The Last Three Seconds is definitely jazz with a heavier persuasion rather than progressive metal with jazz elements. The neoclassical foundations are sublime, the heavier sentiments are spot on and the overall feel from VORONOI on this album is smooth and consistent. To summarise, The Last Three Seconds is beautiful, expressive, textured playing with a generous helping of mind melding rhythms and emotive sonic-storytelling that weaves together a rich and rewarding listen. This is a masterful effort that is truly exceptional for a debut record.

Description/Reviews:
... it’s a full-on concept piece of many layers, forming a folk-rock song-cycle that takes the listener through the ritual, albeit in a modern, contemporary format. Although it has been described as Celtic-influenced, there’s also a broader touch of psychedelia, and the notion of pagan ritual is both ancient and modern, centred around the highs and lows of the natural year in this Sceptred Isle of ours – the spirit of Albion is alive and well! The core sound is an electric mandolin providing the foundation for electric violin and continued tribal drumming, percussion and bass.
