Bright Spirit marks the third instalment in a trilogy that began with The Universe Also Collapses (2019) and continued with Unending Ascending (2023). Bright Spirit sees Gong at their experimental best, more adventurous and more open to the dream than ever.

And dreams are central here. Not just as lyrical imagery, but as a way of thinking - where psychedelia, love, and the thin membrane between worlds feed into the music. The opener, ‘Dream Of Mine’, unfurls like a transmission from the in-between, its mid-section blooming into harmonies and an angular melody that feels like a key turning in a long-awaited lock. Frontman Kavus Torabi describes it as a moment everything has been pointing toward, a flash of clarity inside the swirl.

Elsewhere, there’s tenderness - unexpected perhaps, but unmistakably Gong, ‘Fragrance Of Paradise’ being Torabi’s first-ever love song. ‘The Wonderment’ finds Gong in deeply meditative form, a mystical and explorative journey both inwards and outwards, timeless and expansive, another piece of the kaleidoscopic puzzle that makes up Bright Spirit.

Immersed in their love for Psychedelia, for the Cosmic Rock of the 60s and 70s, for instrumental landscapes in which to lose themselves and find themselves again, for an ancient but now more than ever revolutionary idea of Rock played with humanity and fragrance, Alex Savelli and Tommasi Michienzi imagined a record that could give voice to their passions and brought their instruments into play: guitars, basses and vocal strings for the former, the latter’s electronic collection of synths, theremins, plug-ins and other magic toys. Decisive was the contribution of a talented young drummer, Andrea Lamb D’Aniello, who gave a twist to the material already set up. Invited to play on very spartan loops or sequences, the drummer had to imagine dynamics, evolutions and scenarios that were barely hinted at; later, many of those minimal references were completely abandoned and the duo worked on what the drummer had created. An unusual way of composing and producing that gave Ghostpiracy, mastered by Pino Salviati, great freedom of expression.

The mixing was taken care of by the duo, as were the evocative titles of the tracks, which required much meditation and discussion, given Ghostpiracy‘s mainly instrumental nature. Amid shifting and reckless tracks with echoes of Pink Floyd, Krautrock, vintage Electronics, heretical Progressive and Psychedelic fury, Ghostpiracy is a grand homage to the freedom of music.(Olav M. International spacerockers Space Mirrors are back with new album "The Obscure Side of Art" which is a sequel to their debut "The Darker Side of Art". This time leader Alisa Coral changed the approach and with fellow musicians from USA recorded an album of completely instrumental music. On this musical journey they are exploring the boundaries of Space Rock, Krautrock, Folk Rock, Psychedelic and Progressive. While music is original the certain influences of such bands as Hawkwind, Ozric Tentacles, Ship of Fools, Tangerine Dream can be heard. Lots of different instruments were used while creating the arrangements - from guitars, synthesizers and flutes to contrabass balalaika. Each of six lengthy tracks was inspired by the story of its own. And every composition also has separate page in the booklet with unique art created by the longtime collaborator Kevin Sommers.

The record starts with an ode to an Indian Goddess through So Far Goddess, a track riddled with spacey Sitar sounds and ambient oriental musings. It gets a lot weirder next with the extra terrestrial space funk song Alien Communication, which lets in some of those sweet Funkadelic influences and is deliciously larded with weirdo synths and reverb trickery. It is followed by the album’s title track Desert Warp, which is a heavier rocking, desert style jam that has an extremely cool and laid back camel riding vibe through it all. It is also the first track to feature some chanted vocals, although Grombira mostly keeps their jams 100% instrumental. The album closes with the ambitiously conducted Per Aspera Ad Astra, a twenty minute space odyssey that is cut into three separate chapters. It is a long jam, starting out funky, turning more into all out space rock through the middle, then getting very spooky and minimalistic for a while building up to a great crescendo that hurls us all in a desert warp around the milky way again.

...The Spacelords have not had to change, having found their own perfect niche in the ecology of music, and ‘Unknown Species’ is a reflection of that.

Just three tracks make up this instrumental album, the first and shortest being ‘F.K.B.D.F’ and whilst barely a blink of the eye compared to what follows, it still stacks up at a more than respectable seven minute plus. That running time is made up of perhaps the most urgent beats and riffs on the release, as well as a comparatively simple structure, eschewing time changes to deliver a number that would be sure to have hair flying and flares flapping at a live show.

Description/Reviews:

The style of album is close to the progressive rock with the elements of electronic, jazz, and classical music. All compositions create a concept album and they are related to the most important subjects of Lem's books: cosmic evolution (The Space Fugue, Nucleosynthesis), the puzzle of consciousness (Awareness), space travel (Missing Android), and the creation of the intelligent machine (The First Light, Entanglement, Machine Intelligence).
