The three tracks are very contrasting. The title track is a twelve minute progressive rock instrumental, inspired by the history of the Ark Royal in the Second World War, based on my grandfather’s experiences flying in a Swordfish biplane during the war.
The second track ‘Chasing Neon’ is a retrofuturistic instrumental piece.
The final track is the band's version of the beautiful old Irish folk-song She Moved Through The Fair.

‘Out Of Mind’ is inspired by memory, from a variety of perspectives. It starts with ‘Coming Back’, inspired by Philp K Dick (PKD)’s novel Time Out Of Joint. Track 11 (The Electric Ant) is also based on a PKD story.
The last conscious entity drifting towards the heat death of the universe reflects on the inevitable loss of memory as it disintegrates in ‘I Miss The Stars’. ’Losing myself’ is from the perspective of someone trapped in a mind degenerating due to dementia. ‘When I Was A Ship’ is inspired by Ann Leckie’s ‘Imperial Radch’ science-fiction novel series. ‘Stand Up’ is about those who rewrite history to promote hatred. ‘Lidice’ is named after the Czech mining village destroyed by the Nazis, murdering 88 children and 252 adults. They wanted the village to be wiped from history. A group of coal miners in a mining village in Staffordshire, led by their local doctor, Barnett Stross, set up the organisation Lidice Shall Live. The community donated a day's wage each week to fund the rebuilding of the village after the war.  This song is dedicated to the memory of all those who have been killed because of their origins, and all those who stood in solidarity.
The album is musically diverse with progressive rock, classic rock, electronica, metal, funk, classical, experimental and minimalist influences.

Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate is a proggy, funky, defiant and sometimes poignant London, UK based rock band.  Broken But Still Standing is their third album and has a science fiction / science theme.  It follows the story of human evolution, from LUCA, the last universal common ancestor of all current life on earth, via Lucy, one of the possible precursors of our species, to conflict and eventual symbiosis with artificial intelligences. The general theme of the album is that life has progressed by forming coalitions, whether between the primitive cells that engulfed each other to become the cell and the mitochondria (the power stations of the cell), between individuals to form communities, or between different forms of life in the future.
