Description/Review
What better backdrop for an album inspired by the likes of Rick Wakeman’s The Six Wives of Henry VIII and Bo Hansson’s Lord of the Rings? ...
The result is unashamedly retro, harking back to Prog’s ‘Golden Age’ but with a contemporary edge – and it’s much better than the inspirations noted above. An impressionistic tour de force, at times it’s tightly arranged but with space for looser flights of fancy to describe Balke’s wandering through rural Norway, his journey to the French court, political upheavals in Europe and his altruistic development of the Balkeby area near Oslo, which was devastated by fire in 1879.

Carly Bryant - Keyboards, Vocals
Dave Foster – Guitars

Description/Reviews:
As with Common Ground, Welcome To The Planet sees Big Big Train retain their progressive roots, but also take influence from all spheres of music. The album’s opener Made From Sunshine, co-written by guitarist Dave Foster and singer David Longdon, has guitar lines redolent of Johnny Marr and vocal harmonies reminiscent of the Finn Brothers/Crowded House, with violinist Clare Lindley sharing lead vocals with Longdon.
Elsewhere on the album, keyboard player Carly Bryant gets her first Big Big Train writing credit and lead vocal on the captivating title track. The two recent singles The Connection Plan and Lanterna are included along with a winter themed song, Proper Jack Froster, a bittersweet tale of childhood. The album is completed by the delicate acoustic Capitoline Venus, the beautiful Oak And Stone, and a pair of dazzling instrumentals, A Room With No Ceiling and Bats In The Belfry, written by guitarist/keyboardist Rikard Sjöblom and drummer Nick D’Virgilio, respectively.

Description/Reviews:
Glistening Leotard is a creature that is moving it's very own way for sure, and while none of the landscapes explored are all that novel individually, it is the combinations of these different landscapes that presents itself as something that is at least a bit on the alternative side. A band and an album worth a check by those who tend to enjoy progressive rock explored in a bit more of a non-conformative manner.

Ahmed la Funk aka Achim Schmidt: Bass
Fredh al Fezer aka Fred Feser - Lampe: Drums and samples
Habib L1 aka Andy Leins: Keys and synth

Description/Reviews:
The record starts with an ode to an Indian Goddess through So Far Goddess, a track riddled with spacey Sitar sounds and ambient oriental musings. It gets a lot weirder next with the extra terrestrial space funk song Alien Communication, which lets in some of those sweet Funkadelic influences and is deliciously larded with weirdo synths and reverb trickery. It is followed by the album’s title track Desert Warp, which is a heavier rocking, desert style jam that has an extremely cool and laid back camel riding vibe through it all. It is also the first track to feature some chanted vocals, although Grombira mostly keeps their jams 100% instrumental. The album closes with the ambitiously conducted Per Aspera Ad Astra, a twenty minute space odyssey that is cut into three separate chapters. It is a long jam, starting out funky, turning more into all out space rock through the middle, then getting very spooky and minimalistic for a while building up to a great crescendo that hurls us all in a desert warp around the milky way again.

Description/Reviews:
All in all, The Shape of Everything is an album that offers tranquility within its confined space and one that elicits a sense of nirvana you don’t get from most albums. It’s difficult to categorize this album as metal, given the lack of heavy, driven instrumentation and harsh vocals one is more familiar with, but then again, shoegaze is metal-adjacent and this album has beauty in spades.

Description/Reviews:
Retreat from Moscow originally hail from Cardiff, Wales, UK and gigged extensively from 1979-1981. Fast forward 40 years and the band of core members reformed in 2019 to start recording old and new material for a new album. The roots of their music is influenced by the progressive giants of the 70s but their sound nods more to the 80s new wave of progressive music with strong melody, big keyboards and choruses, and soaring vocals.

Moritz Nixdorf - drums
Patrick Aguilar - bass
Thomas Mrosek - saxophone
   With
Stella Polaris - vocals (4)

Description/Reviews:
The prologue "Gemurmel Aus Dem Brunnen" (murmur from the well in English) is a pretty promising one. The audience can be absorbed by their slowtempo, chamber-y atmosphere launched especially via precision techniques by the rhythm section - Patrick and Moritz. And such offensive King Crimson-like sound anchors are crucial really. Magnificent developments of guitar and saxophone are tremendous too. The last long queue of instrumental bigbangs notifies us what they want to do and what they should do for the current progressive rock scene.

Description/Reviews:
It is an album full of lovely vocalised sentiments wrapped up in a beautifully woven framework of the melodic musical delight of enchanting keyboards and beautifully arranged guitar. Music of course is well known for being the vehicle for transporting emotions and engaging the playback of those past and treasured memories. ‘Reverse the Universe’ is, absolutely, an album that evokes a warm glow throughout. Also, each of the seven songs on this album has its own identity and is quite different in structure that is despite all of the material being of a relative adagio tempo.

Line-up
Olli Huhtanen - vocals, keyboards
Sami Sarhamaa (Pax Romana, Kataya, Liquid Wolf) - vocals, bass, guitar
  With:
Miri Miettinen - drums
Ella Eriksson - backing vocals

Description/Reviews:
The roughly 66-minute album opens with an instrumental piece 'Bates'. The electric guitar and keys carry the melodies reminiscent of IQ for instance. 'Assimilate' is a good example of the band's general style which I consider to be fairly comparable to Pax Romana and other projects of my namesake Matti Kervinen, with whom Sarhamaa has collaborated a lot. That is, a slightly melancholic song in an unhurried tempo, some Pink Floyd vibes and a nice balance between vocal orientation and a sophisticated soundscape painting with instrumental sections. All in all not very complex, meandering compositions full of odd time signatures, but I've never demanded those things from good prog anyway. Another thing to enjoy with Lighthouse Sparrows is the alteration of two different vocals, both being fairly good. Whereas Olli Huhtanen's voice reminds me of Guy Manning, Sami Sarhamaa has a bit smokier voice with an occasional David Sylvian feel in the delivery.
