Parallel Minds have taken some serious progressive steps since their debut album Headlong Disaster was released in 2015. The groove-metal influences, reminiscent of Sepultura and Korn sound vibrantly playful, whereas the trashy riffs sound superior, more intense, angry, and tight, often reminding me of Symphony X. Bonded by a new drummer and a recently added bass player, a concrete foundation has also been cemented for a more concise progressive speed/power-metal tour de force.

Wasting no time whatsoever on introductions, Vektor dives in at the deep end with the 9-minute “Charging The Void.” If this track is any indication, the band’s Voivod-meets-Watchtower-in-zero-gravity approach remains intact. This song is insanely complex harmonically and structurally, and the Devin Townsend-esque alien backing vocals are a nice touch as well. “Cygnus Terminal” is another dizzying array of space metal, slightly more downtempo but no less progressive. “LCD (Liquid Crystal Disease)” opens with a lengthy section of guitar tapping madness, leading to an impossibly fast thrash riff and some neo-classical touches here and there.

It’s hard to find similar bands to compare Adimiron’s intense diversity.  Their blend of distinctively complex genres gives them a unique edge over their counterparts that fall into similar subgenres.  State of Persistence has some brutally heavy cadences leaning more toward straightforward death metal.  The time signatures during Redemption and The Giant and the Crow lean more toward the progressive side.  Whichever way the songs lean; the mix of metal styles on Timelapse keeps the album very interesting because you never know where the next song is going to take you.  It is also worth mentioning that though the songs differ quite a bit, it doesn’t come off as disjointed or make you feel like the band has no direction.  This all works very well with seamless transitions and a high level of intensity.

The band may label their sound as thrash metal, but that is only partially right. While the music offers thrashing riffs and pummeling grooves, there is a lot going on; from rich melodies to hook-laden choruses to epic chord progressions. One might inclined to describe this as melodic thrash, but Arx throws just enough crushing heaviness throughout The Speed of Dark to defy the tag. At over an hour long, the band juggles enough variation to keep things interesting, from the spacey, psyscheldic soloing on “What Could’ve Been” to the epic pacing of the title track; it should suffice to say that it’s not all windmilling, headbanging thrash metal. Chugging thrash riffs collide with moody atmospheric passages and drop into melodic licks; constantly changing gears and keeping the listener on their toes.

Obzidian haven't messed about with the opening track 'Their Legacy Has Failed'. An immediate smack in the face as the opener bursts into life with blistering blast beats and a demonic vocal. The lead riff has that Melodic Thrash edge to it, just darker. The vocal is an impeccable scream which adds a Black Metal edge. The merest touch of a solo in the middle, simple but effective, leads into the chugging riffs of the second half. The title track opens as a blisteringly fast paced beauty. When you hit the second third of the track, the USP of Obzidian starts to take form. Frenetic Thrash makes way for slow and deep, doomy riffs. The scream changes momentarily to a growl adding an air of malevolence.

While listening to this “The Mechanisms of Consequence” (TMC) you get the impression that Synaptik have a universal passport that takes them from one musical territory to another without border control even batting an eyelid. At its core the music is an enjoyable Thrash Metal but there are also several hints of Death Metal, particularly with the style of drumming. Power Metal can be invoked in some melodies and if you listen carefully you might hear some riffs with the dark ambience of Black Metal. And of course, when you consider these genre affiliations as well as the numerous tempo breaks and mood swings, the Progressive genre is automatically added to the picture. Despite its multi-facetedness the album feels very homogenous.

 “Conquer” is by far the best offering from the band, incorporating a depth of influences that cross genres to the point where you can only call it “progressive.”
There is much more to the concept of “Conquer” than the underlying message. Where there has always been great maturity and strength in the songwriting, the band has incorporated some of the most muscular riffs in its history, making this release by far its heaviest material recorded to date. Melody mongers need not fret, as the soulful whims of a hard rock band lurk deep inside the madness. The best way to describe the performance on “Conquer” is “armor-plated Saigon Kick with industrial tentacles.” Knowing much of the influences that each member brings into the fold, I can easily envision a death match where the old hard rock roots being pummeled and distorted by the modern meat mallets of Monster Magnet and Samael.

The sound of the band is a mix between black/progressive and death but without sticking to any of those completely.  The instrumental quality and the songwriting are without a doubt their strong points; they can go from serpentine moments like during the beginning of “Not Competent” and then jump into a pure black metal orgasm within seconds and without sounding at all forced.  I love the eerie intro during “Redacted”, the main melodic riff during “Ruined” after the 2.00 minute mark or the whole “Orthodoxy”, which reminds me of Opeth a little bit towards the end.
