While "Aequilibrium" is not nearly as catchy as Noveria's previous releases, it does feature some of the band's strongest songs. Overall the album is another solid modern power/progressive release which will appeal to fans with its engaging and relevant story line and wonderful melodies and solos as the band hits its core strengths of musicianship, performance and production. However, the once well marked line that set Noveria apart has begun to blur.

‘Spellbound’ is centered around the life and work of  influential filmmaker Alfred Hitchcock. Each of the 11 songs included in  the album traces the plot of a Hitchcock movie, including masterpieces  such as ‘Frenzy’, ‘Notorius’, ‘The Birds’ and of course ‘Psycho’, all  with a very distinctive Sadist twist that make them stand out.  Musically, ‘Spellbound’ is one the band’s heaviest and darkest albums to  date, but the Progressive and Death Metal influences that fans of the  band have learned to love are still intact.

The latter are abundant and possibly the best part of any Eldritch song.

Noveria can be seen as the darker little brother of DGM, another Italian power prog band, and their sound is quite similar: melodic power metal with heavy keyboard incorporation, a pummeling rhythm section and occasionally unconventional song structures. The sound calls Symphony X to mind, as well as Evergrey who also love their dark emotional themes without turning to harsher soundscapes. Dealing with a complex and sensitive subject while employing such high-speed bombast is a tightrope act few can pull off, but Noveria have an ace up their sleeve with Francesco Corigliano’s voice: the man is extremely expressive, and songs like opener “Shock” would not be as strong without him.

Wel well well, what do you get if you cross Symphony X, Amaranthe and Rhapsody? The answer would be something close to the sound of Chronos Zero who hail from Italy and boast a progressive metal sound, a futuristic concept album dealing with science fiction and fact and three vocalists; two male, one female all of whom weave complex vocal melodies together. The band have added the growling vocals of Manuel and the soaring classically trained pipes of Margherita since their debut meaning that the Russell Allen-like throat of Jan Manenti (from Love.Might.Kill) now has two perfect foils to tell the complex story. Luckily he is also aided by the virtuosity of the band who rely on the tried and tested method of having the single guitarist playing with insane skill, a rhythm section that changes the time signature and pace at will fluidly adding twists and turns to the songs and a whole load of keyboards from a dedicated keyboardist as well as the from the guitarist, this means the whole thing is cinematic in scope and like I said the Symphony X looms large but not enough to overpower what the band are trying to do, they have enough individuality to separate them from the pack. As I said the album is a concept and as I haven't read the booklet, or heard the debut album, I can't really tell what it's about but it seems to be set in a futuristic world which means that the prog/power of the band is perfect fit, the album weighs in at 14 songs an none of these are short full of instrumental sections, solos as well as barrages of riffage, especially Shattered which tries to throw in as many as possible with three time changes in the song, so if you are not a fan of prog metal it may be a slog but for those that like their metal clever, vivid, huge in scope and full of technical musicianship then Hollowlands - The Tears Path: Chapter One (to give it it's full title) will be sitting somewhere near the top of your must buy list! ...Underlying Issues is heavier, dense, maybe even channeling their darker angle from their early years. What is clearly notable from the start, and throughout, is the abundance of riffage, powerful and relentless. Some may listen and find a depth and blister akin to thrash metal. These things, in turn, are wrapped up in the brisk pace of power metal. However, even when the tempo is more moderate, as with All And More, Eldritch keeps the thumping heaviness in high gear. Even so, underneath and weaving its way through the songs is melody and harmony. Though the guitars are brisk and sharp, there's still harmony.

Talking about progressive death metal, this new Sadist focuses on the laughing carnivore, omnipresent in many African cultures, ridden by the devil: look at this beautiful front cover by Luca Orecchia.
In terms of effects and atmospheres, the keyboards could have been used better. In my humble opinion, that sounds a bit dated with two much reverb. The screaming’n’growling vocals are strong and varied, no doubt about it.
But the real pleasure lies elsewhere, in the perfect interaction between bass, drums and guitars. We reach a dimension of high quality and creativity, in line with the great artwork. From extreme metal riffs to jazzy fretless bass, from masterclass drums to inspired guitar soli, all the ingredients are mixed for a great tracklist.
I am not forgetting the percussions of the special guest Jean N’Diaye, and a really nice touch of hypnotic oud.

Here's a fun little instrumental album from the duo that call themselves Frankenstein Rooster ... and The Nerdvrotic Sounds' Escape is their second release, out now on Scarlet Records. The music is very much rooted in heavy metal but with a healthy dollop of funk, jazz, and prog to go along with it.
The opening title track is a fun jazz-funk romp, as Indri lays some some addicting riffs over Colleluori's groove laden drum patterns, while both "Elektro Raptor" and "The Spirit of Shawn" (and ode to Shawn Lane perhaps?) feature some mind boggling lead guitar work from the Elvenking shredder. "Walking Shred" is another intense song, with Meshuggah styled riffs & rhythms , horror film sound clips, and dazzling lead guitar solos. "The Phantom of the 13th Orange" is glorious progressive metal, and "Cthulhu Racing" is another trip down funk avenue, highlighted by some screaming wah-wah soaked licks and irresistible rhythms. Star Wars fans & shred guitar lovers will get treated to the insane "Flying In A Yoda's Dream", and the 13-minute "Sevean Argagn Dance" brings a wealth of acoustic guitar & synth elements into the fray.
Plenty of variety, colors, and textures infiltrate The Nerdvrotic Sounds' Escape, ultimately resulting in a fun & enjoyable collection of instrumental rock & metal that will be of great interest to guitarists of all ages. (Pete Pardo at seaoftranquility.org)

It’s hard to find similar bands to compare Adimiron’s intense diversity.  Their blend of distinctively complex genres gives them a unique edge over their counterparts that fall into similar subgenres.  State of Persistence has some brutally heavy cadences leaning more toward straightforward death metal.  The time signatures during Redemption and The Giant and the Crow lean more toward the progressive side.  Whichever way the songs lean; the mix of metal styles on Timelapse keeps the album very interesting because you never know where the next song is going to take you.  It is also worth mentioning that though the songs differ quite a bit, it doesn’t come off as disjointed or make you feel like the band has no direction.  This all works very well with seamless transitions and a high level of intensity.

What makes Astra as astral as its name suggests is an exemplary talent for making prog metal rock. The genre usually gets its goods from mileage, but Astra takes flight on the first song and never touches ground again. Of course there is a growing curve for some of the songs, yet you wouldn’t be able to tell from “Over The Hills” on From Within or the first four tracks present here. “Losing My Ego” is a sprawling, powerized prog assault delivering punch after punch, catchy chorus included. No shortage of any of that either on the dreamy “Hole In The Silence”, dreamier “From Sunrise To Sunset”, and kick-ass “Too Late” (“Too Late! Too Late!”).

 "Herons" is movin' to the same symphonic/Gothic metal paths as their debut but with a strictly more heavier approach this time. Lisy Stefanoni's vocal lines are once again the band's biggest weapon and the guitar parts are another impressive thing. Heavy riffs with a some really impressive solos, great arrangements and a tight musicianship. Take for example "Drops Of Amber" and you'll understand what I'm talking about. This is a perfect sample of EVENOIRE's music. Heavy, poetic with a cinematographic vibe, beautiful melodies and superb performances. When we are talking about pure atmospheric symphonic metal, then "Love Enslaves" is the absolute highlight!! "Tears Of Medusa" is yet another big moment from the new album; a more straight forward rocker that features amazing and powerful performances, an inspired guitar work and some solid arrangements. "Devil's Signs" has an updated, modern metal vibe while in "Wild Females" the Gothic/ethnic elements are in front row in this excellent tune.

The music is chaotic at times (Killing The Hope Inside) almost to the point of no return, only to transition into a melodic passage that brings things back from the abyss. The guitar solos are as frenzied and speedy as the songs, at times reminding me of classic Slayer. What you have here are ten no nonsense slamming brutally heavy tracks that will make you want to jump in the pit. The title track sets the tone for the album with neck snapping, whiplash inducing headbanging thrash metal. There are some lighter moments such as in Kill The Light Inside and most notably the dark and moody mid-tempo of Last Star Alights, but for the most part, each song on the album takes a turn pummeling the listener with heavy riffs and brutal rhythms (see Evict the Enemy).

The album kicks off with Inside You, a moody and catchy headbanger with a soaring melodic chorus, and lots of tasty riffs courtesy of the guitar duo of Eugene Simone and Rudj Ginanneschi. The title track features the keyboard wizardy of Gabriele Caselli overlapping the thrash metal machine gun drumming of Rafahell Dridge with melody. The mood takes on a melancholy and darker tone with Alone Again. The band combines the clean guitar tones with keyboards and Holler’s melodic voice combined with superb vocal harmonies. Based on the lyrical content, Waiting For Someone is a song about loneliness and the search for love. The music is heavy and progressive with plenty of melody and guitar crunch.

Everything about this recording, from song composition to performance, sounds better than past efforts. It seems that the rest of the band has been invigorated by the injection of Lione's talent. And that's a good thing.
