Phil Lanzon has been the keyboardist for Uriah Heep since 1986, but his debut solo album If You Think I’m Crazy! (2017) is outside the narrow confines of Heep music. It appears Phil had some serious prog he needed to manifest. He has a lot of pop/rock songwriting experience and had accumulated a backlog of songs that were not Heep-related. (OK, one song is Heep-ish.) This is glorious melodic/catchy prog plus some proggy ballads that probably could only have been created by someone from the first generation of British rock musicians. Lanzon grew up alongside the likes of Genesis, though he also admits to listening to and admiring Steven Wilson. Genesis may be the best single reference if one includes both their prog and pop eras, as the music here spans both. Lanzon’s songs also tend to be story-based. It’s surprising how bombastic most of this music is (‘bombast’ is an entirely positive thing to us progsters), with choirs, strings, and immaculate production yielding that larger-than-life sound. John Mitchell (Lonely Robot) had a big role on the album, playing guitar and singing some of the lead vocals. ... The whole album may make you nostalgic for the 1970s in that some of these songs would have had a chance at radio airplay then. Not now. ...If you’re like us, you skip to the longest track, in this case The Forest, although the shortest song, the instrumental Step Overture, is the most full-on prog (like the song Cinema was on Yes’s 90125), and the first song Mind Over Matter the one most likely to get lodged in your skull. Naturally, Steven Wilson‘s sound almost has to be referenced here; his mark on the band is well known and documented. However, you might be surprised to hear other bands being name dropped, like The Beatles or Yes.

The influences on ‘Echolocation’ are quite varied raging from progrock to post punk, this band would have been a success in the 70’s or 80’s. It’s impressive how all these great musicians have set their egos aside and come together to craft something quite special.

"We drew from a pool of musical references from the early seventies who were primarily thought of as rock bands, but to me were responsible for some of the greatest ‘Prog’ epics. Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” and “Stairway to Heaven. Rainbow’s “Stargazer” and Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” were the order of the day. There was no point in doing what each of us had done previously in our respective bands, the goal was to do something different . One ingredient that you find with these classic albums of the 70’s, was that the bands were not afraid to mix the styles of music up from track to track. On a Zeppelin or Queen album, each track would have a different feel, rock, folk, jazz, blues. This is something we were not afraid to do. we just did what we liked, so each track ended up with a different feel. These days albums are very linear, stay in one style and can be a little monotonous."

'Labyrinth' is TSO's first album of individual, unconnected songs, the 14-track set is knit together by the serious underpinning of the songs, whether it's the sweeping overview of humanity on 'Time & Distance', the concerns of world banking irregularities on 'Not Dead Yet', the anti-bullying message of 'Not The Same' (which O'Neill co-wrote with his daughter) or the learn-from-the-past studies of 'Prince Igor and 'King Rurik'. In some ways it's a straight ahead album, and in some ways it's not. It's blatantly out of the box more music-driven as opposed to story- and music-driven. The world is a mess right now, so 'Letters From the Labyrinth' examines some of the problems we're facing now. You can enjoy them as songs, but they're there to make you think.

A casual listen will have you feeling that the player is mature and fully in control of their playing on many levels. From melodic structure to composition, you know its a player nearing the peak of their powers, after some 20-something years of playing live, guitar tuition, and of course writing. Think of how you feel when you hear Petrucci, or Satriani, or Vai, you know damn well its them when you hear the first riff and more so you know they are literally talking through their guitar, they have such command. This 4th release from Sean is by far the most restrained yet explosive, and compositional rounded release of his so far.
