Hieronymus Dream "Nostos"

Country: Greece
Genre(s): Instrumental Psychedelic
Label: The Weird Beard Records (vinyl)
Format: digital, vinyl
Release date: October 30, 2021 (digital), November 19, 2021 (vinyl)

1. Odysseus Raft (7:19)
2. The Island of Lotus Eaters (7:41)
3. Circe's Secret (4:22)

5. Uranometria (7:02)
6. Land of Vraltar (9:22)

Total Time 41:11

Line-up
Anonymous

Description/Reviews:
Our journey begins with the sublime Odysseus Raft. The title is a reference to Homer’s epic poem Odyssey and the Greek mythological hero Odysseus. Our hero escapes from the isle of Calypso on a raft, only to see it shattered by the pesky, pitch-fork-wielding sea god Poseidon. The music reflects this sense of scale with an immersive kosmische sprawl of bubbling synths, hypnotic drums and intricately interwoven guitar and bass. That tantalising sense of adventure runs throughout Nostos. The album title itself is a reference to Ancient Greek literature and a hero’s return journey. For an LP without any vocals, there are more literary references here than your average public library.

Description/Reviews:
Mastodon have repeatedly excelled at taking fans on masterful narrative adventures, but with Hushed and Grim, they've crafted the most emotionally resonant journey of their career. Part of that power comes from its tenaciously prolonged duration and solemn subject matter; rather than record something that's significantly welcoming, concise, and entertaining—which has always worked well in the past, don't get me wrong—they've produced something considerably more gloomy, contemplative, and daunting. It's Mastodon at their most mature and poised, with an almost endless amount of invigorating musicianship, meditative songwriting, and endearing interplay between the three vocalists.

Description/Reviews:
Musically, Cyclopean Walls blend in their sound the European with the US progressive metal with the addition of classical elements and hauntingly beautiful melodies, creating a dark atmosphere that offers cinematic vibes. In the course of the record, they draw inspiration from heavier genres to form an ominous atmosphere fitting to the theme. The doom metal inspired riffing in the songs “The Garden” and “The Doom that Came to Sarnath” are such examples.

Description/Reviews:
The band has an unconventional sound.  The bio that came with the promo describes them as progressive rock with classic prog elements and a post-modernist bent.  The latter is definitely true, but the band plays something I can’t describe that well.  It is “progressive” in the true meaning of the word, being ambitious, maybe a little odd, and maybe even a little scary.  There are crazy rhythms and atmospheres all over the place, and it can take a few listens to process what they play.

Ronan Geraghty – piano, keyboards, drums, bass, synths, glockenspiel, percussion, vox, FX

Description/Reviews:
The end of “Goldolphin” is nicely rounded, as quiet piano work takes us back to the spring day. By contrast “Orchid” starts as if we’re in a sound laboratory or an experimental music studio. From the grounded “Godolphin”, there’s a lofty air with hints of magic, melancholy and the East. A distinctively post-rock guitar line combines with the drum beat to bring calm and order back into our lives. At this point I could see where the comparisons with Yes and King Crimson might have come from. Let me add Mike Oldfield to that list. clayhands guide us through a world of dreams, a pleasant one I must say. “Orchid” is a super warm track, giving justification to the band’s self-description as a “human band”.

Description/Reviews:
Kites makes an immediate impression, but more importantly it grows and develops further with repeated listens. Better sequenced than A Tower of Clocks, and more diverse than The Man Who Never Was, Kites sees a revitalised band successfully walking the line between maintaining their signature sound, but also not being afraid to develop as musicians and try out new things. It is evolution rather than revolution and it will hopefully both consolidate their existing fanbase and draw in new listeners in the months to come.

Description/Reviews:
The instrumental trio Addiktio deliver progressive, blistering sound, by mixing elements of rock, jazz, and metal, into a unique sonic experience. Catchy parts and strong melodies inspired by the open Nordic landscape have shaped their sound into ambient and massive sonic landscapes, filled with mathematical and melodic parts. A brutal, confronting guitar is backed by vintage bass and pure drum magic. It’s catchy instrumentals manage to capture any listener with its ‘in-your-face’ and chaotic expression.

Description/Reviews:
With a defined style, IAH invites us to explore instrumental environments in which psychedelia, post-rock, stoner and post-metal coexist in perfect harmony. Without fanfare, and knowing when to put the intensity, they manage to create songs full of beauty with which to transmit different states of mind to the listener. Long songs in which they express their good work and that are built from the calm, but that contain different oscillations that make them anything, less monotonous. With nods to the characteristic ambient sound of bands like Yawning Man, they manage to combine progressive elements with the quieter echoes of desert rock. A sensory dimension in which its atmospheres trap the listener, providing a reflective environment of great beauty. This is not an album to party, but, on the contrary, it is the ideal soundtrack to find yourself, in a warm, and very introspective environment. An album that may seem somewhat linear at first impression, but which, on the contrary, has many nuances embedded in each of its songs, something that IAH does with the subtlety of a veteran band. Description/Reviews:
So, is this “prog opera” any good? The answer is yes. Though this reviewer questions the necessity to make this one giant composition given how little the lyrical themes seem to connect to one another, the quality of the music is top notch. Whether it be the busy and propulsive “Truth to Power (Only Truth Can Change the World),” the sublime “Mother Earth (Is Calling You),” or the playful baroque meets Celtic stylings of “Pizzacotto,” Steinhardt and co. give it their all. His husky vocals and graceful violin playing take central stage throughout the record, but Steinhardt doesn’t hog the mic (so to speak). In a similar fashion, the special guest musicians ... don’t try to take over, instead serving the needs of the compositions they perform on.

Colin Edwin (Porcupine Tree): Double Bass, Rhythm Programming.
Jon Durant: Electric and Cloud Guitars, Keyboards
   With
Vinny Sabatino: Drums
Aleksei Saks: Trumpet
Andi Pupato: Percussion

Description/Reviews:
With Colin Edwin’s double bass serving as an anchor and Jon Durant’s electric lead guitar and 'cloud-guitar' soaring freely, drummer Vinny Sabatino’s skillful drumming gives the entire album a proficient jazz-rock edge, while trumpet master Aleksei Saks and percussionist Andi Pupato bring in yet another unique shading to the music that breathes fresh life into the mix. It’s been said that with its enveloping elements of improvisation based around strong thematic compositions, ambient textural atmospherics, subtle electronics and elements of progressive jazz/rock, the music of Burnt Belief is sometimes hard to classify. That may be true, yet with the 2021 release of Mutual Isolation, Burnt Belief spans the distance to reach further innovative and mind-bending heights.

Description/Reviews:
A blatant and unabashed throwback to the golden days of 70s prog, Shamblemaths will enthuse the connoisseur of complexity, and drive most others to outrage or silent sobs. Part humorous, part serious, all wonky, self-important and rampantly anglophile! Their second album is darker, heavier, knottier, yet more fragile and vulnerable. Some might call it a change of direction, but then Shamblemaths never had a direction to begin with. The album is like a picture with many shades, but all from a common, dark palette. There is anger and despair, quiet melancholy and faint embers of hope. In sound and instrumentation they remain in some will call the retro-prog landscape. Here are heavy numbers, reinterpretations of a 20th century string quartet and an ancient hymn, and contemporary classical moments. Yet all the components are chosen and constructed to form a coherent album which is more than a collection of tunes.
