Description/Reviews:
Stealing the Fire has stuck to their guns and still plays a style that echoes what they did on their debut, now they just do it much better. Five long tracks, the shortest is close to nine minutes, the longerst nearly nineteen, each a cornucopia of shifting meter, colorful melodies and unusual compositional ideas in epic form.

Description/Reviews
In keeping with much of the post-rock genre, the music isn’t overly complex either. Yes it is technical up to a point, but rather than wowing us with displays of dexterity or convoluted ideas, the power of the compositions is rooted in the tones, the textures, the layers, and the atmospheres that are created. And, without fail, each track brings something to the party, regardless of whether or not it features a spoken-word section or, in the case of one track, full-on lyrics and vocals. Soft, quiet parts crash into walls of sound, or the momentum builds steadily to create just the right dramatic effect. Ostentatious solo displays are present to a certain extent but are kept to a minimum in favour of a full-on band dynamic, where it is the whole that creates the magic.

Description/Reviews
Over a layer strings and oozing synthetic chords we’re brought into a state of self awareness, building for just over a minute before dropping us into the start of ‘Confessional Lock’ which could easily be mistaken for a modern descendent of Pink Floyd’s ‘Comfortably Numb’. Guitars ring across a widely drawn soundscape as Kyle’s vocals stretch across this musical infinity. They’re strong, the sign of someone who’s in complete control of his talent. He uses different voices throughout the song (and throughout the album itself), something that draws you in, especially on headphones.

Nick Andrew aka. Nickjitsu - everything

Description/Reviews
Nickjitsu's debut album has influences as diverse as Return to Forever to Beethoven, by way of Dream Theatre, Jeff Beck, Allan Holdsworth, Weather Report and 8-bit video games.
The idea was to see what one musician could do with one guitar and a laptop. Every instrument (apart from bass) was played on guitar including, violins, drums, Highland bagpipes and seashores.
Nickjitsu uses the latest midi guitar technology to acheive this. The result is a mixture of straight guitar tunes and modern rock/fusion tone poems that marry melodic noodley guitar with a wide palette of compositional colours.

Description/Reviews
Here, on the other hand, we definitely meet him somewhat violently at home and we speak in a jazz rock landscape with roots dating back to the last century, but with our eyes definitely solid party in our time. Helbø has taken inspiration from foreign giants in the field such as Mike Stern, Allan Holdsworth and Pat Metheny, but our own heroes in the field such as Jon Eberson and Terje Rypdal have certainly been listened to a lot too. With such a foundation, Helbø has created his own expression and it is both groovy and crappy.

Total Time 38:31

Line-up
Paul Evans

Description/Reviews
“Easy Om” and “Inca Trail” are soft modernized songs of the early 70s Canterbury scene, with the use of lots of “progressive” elements and the band’s own particular style of continuing rhythm changing. “Setting Sun” and “The Road To La Mezuquita” are a kind of mellow prog-rock ballads, bringing to mind Traffic ’73-’74 era. “New Day” enters a little deeper into the mid-70s Progressive-Rock path but without being “dangerous”… An amazing tune follows, it is called “Barleycorn”, it’s a typical Magic Bus Canterbury-influenced track that shows an intense early 70s Gong attitude!

Description/Reviews
They basically lost their black metal roots for their new album which were VERY present on “Mayhem In Blue.” “Eden In Reverse” is very 70s prog rock mixed with psych rock and is really amazing too! Honestly the band has made a major change between these albums and yet it doesn’t appear to be noted anywhere.

Description/Reviews
Launching with the percussion-driven opener In Motion, it sets off a busy set of songs that often burst into proud choruses. Electronic poppy vibes are never far from the surface; the boppy bouncy excursions duelling with the more ambitious. In Vantablack packs plenty into fourteen minutes with a brief mid-song break of pace that leads into a hefty neo-prog string-laden closeout. Possibly the best moment of the album.
Another highlight is the slow march of Phosphene. A dense, textural track that sees the band coming to terms with previous grudges.

Description/Reviews
It is part of a re-worked version of interviews Stefano Giannotti held with the personnel of the Hospice of San Cataldo (Lucca) for the short film SAY HELLO TO THE CLOUDS (2012). These testimonies became words for pieces in perfect OTEME style, halfway between folk songs and chamber music, avant-rock and contemporary poetry, historical 1900s and psychedelia, “almost-a-radio drama” and musical theatre.

Eberhard Graef: Drums and Percussion

Description/Reviews
Classic Progressive Rock by Versus X Mastermind Arne Schäfer. On his new Apogee album you will find obvious Gentle Giant influences in form of counterpoint a capella vocal and convoluted instrumental arrangements with odd meters, as well as atmospheric textures of accoustic guitars, driving rock songs with solistic escapades and orchestral passages. As usual the Apogee songs consist of multiple themes, which were interwoven to complex, dynamic-symphonic structures. Also fans of Jethro Tull and the early Genesis should take a look here.

Description/Reviews
From the first album hearings, one may identify Porcupine Tree and Steven Wilson’s solo work, as the band’s greatest influence. And this is partly true. The atmosphere, the lyricism, the vocals and the heavy outbursts, the structure of the compositions and the musical approach are reminiscent of Wilson’s works. But by no means do Guppy Fish just stay there. A well-trained listener will identify a diverse range of influences, from 70s prog rock and psychedelic / trippy elements to alternative / grunge rock from the 90’s in some turns and in playing attitude, but all this is combined to create the band’s own musical language and that’s a real achievement, especially considering this is a debut album.

... the band they bear most resemblance to is probably Caravan circa ‘If I Could Do It All Over Again’, courtesy of a deliciously dated Sixties vibe, flute solos to die for and bossanova-flecked rhythms.
