Valesa – Chapter II: Viva the Apocalypse! is the new full-length album from Norwegian art-pop cult band Major Parkinson, and the second installment in their ongoing Valesa series. Expanding the neon-shaded universe of Velvet Prison, this chapter pushes the project into sharper, more visceral territory, blending theatrical art-pop with psychedelic rock, groove-driven arrangements, and a darker narrative edge.

Recorded largely live with the full band in the same room, the album carries a renewed physicality and immediacy. Prominent horn sections, dual vocal interplay, and a groovy, rhythmic pulse gives the record an energetic, almost feral presence that marks a distinct evolution from Part I’s synth-infused aesthetics. Thematically, the album explores the dark magnetism of showbiz, American mythologies, and the hallucinatory line between utopia and delusion — delivered with the band’s trademark dark humor and cinematic flair.

Musically, Letters draws inspiration from the organic warmth of 1970s recordings — featuring spacious arrangements and live, breathing instrumentation — while also clearly nodding to alternative 1990s pop-rock, with strong melodies, distinctive guitar lines, raw energy and a spirit of exploration. The result is a sound that feels both nostalgic and contemporary, making Letters the duo’s most complete release to date.

Lyrically, the album revolves around identity, time, relationships and transformation. The songs hold space for melancholy, hope, self-irony and resilience. Letters feels like a collection of messages — to the past, the future, and to the people who shape us along the way.

This new album is Lappo’s most focused effort to date - the tight songwriting and sharp hooks result in an album that flows at an exciting pace. A vocal-forward album, Lappo leans even harder into pop tactics to provide catchy choruses supported by crafty song structures and melodic dynamism. Fans of the solo artist’s prior work will rejoice in the continued display of Lappo’s rip-roaring guitar soloing on Skyline, while also finding new intrigue in the riffs and synth concoctions that he boasts this time around.

This new album sees Lappo double-down on his pop rock leanings, with hefty synth-pop and prog influences to keep listeners on their toes. The album starts with the tenacious AOR-tinged “Neverending Storm” - a nod to Lappo’s prior prog metal leanings. In contrast, the floaty synthwave of “Last of Her Kind” and the disco swagger of “Creature Comforts” embody Lappo's love of pop music. With this new album, Lappo reaches new highs vocally - both figuratively and literally. On “Move On” his voice seamlessly hops between a soothing baritone and a soaring falsetto, while on "New Lines" he delivers an anthemic chorus bound to thrill any rock fan. Songs like "My World on Pause" and "Monochrome" combine glistening pop rock choruses with playful dueling piano and guitar solos. Lappo shows off his compositional finesse elsewhere with tracks like the cinematic “Out of Touch” and the luminous album closer “No Cloud”. As a whole, Abandoned Corners is an eclectic and delightful listen.

Those first three songs are great Pop, a little Bubblegum, a little Soft Rock, an edge towards Pop Punk, but then everything changes. Moving Pictures is 6 minutes of space age Prog, keyboard led with big runs yet including a driving bassline and a splendid Guitar break. Again part of the song reminds you of Modern Prog, but than enough takes you back to the keyboard wizzards of the 70s and part of the vocal even sounds like Russell Mael.

It is an album full of lovely vocalised sentiments wrapped up in a beautifully woven framework of the melodic musical delight of enchanting keyboards and beautifully arranged guitar. Music of course is well known for being the vehicle for transporting emotions and engaging the playback of those past and treasured memories. ‘Reverse the Universe’ is, absolutely, an album that evokes a warm glow throughout. Also, each of the seven songs on this album has its own identity and is quite different in structure that is despite all of the material being of a relative adagio tempo.
