Where This Leads is a patient listen all the same, starting life with the forlorn ambience and pulsing kosmiche of “The Star Are Dying”. Engines dead, solar chimes sail toward the twin systems of existential dread and tranquilized bliss, zoning guitar tones stretched out in waveform, prickly feedback toasting the senses under total immersion. “Butchery” is impossibly pretty in its irradiated wake, fingers audible on the fret, a synth wash applied to a simple acoustic meander.

Description/Reviews: 

The band still stay true to the core of what they do: heavy, heavy psych-rock with a deep dark underbelly. However, they seem to have been swimming in Mogwai’s pool just a tad too much. A couple of the tracks, ‘Wheel and Deal’ and ‘Too Close to Home’, both have a distinct post-rock feel about them, and stack up the layers simultaneously like the Scottish quintet do with such ease and grace.

Things start slowly with the gentle lappings of “Slow Wake” – a mind massage aboard the holodeck of the Enterprise, the track’s amorphous landscape swirling together with producer John McBain of Monster Magnet‘s extensive echoplex delay. The kraut-rocking “Keeping On” then sets the dial for deep space via its crunching bassline and sci-fi synth dither, exploding latterly with brain-busting guitar riffs. Next, the red-eyed “Spiderwebs” explores the same synth-driven, “psychedelically-enhanced drone” as helped made Photos Of Photos a success.
The two ten-minute closers are harder, peeling back layers of chugging kraut to expose phaser battles, righteous shred and thick streams of dark paranoia that slowly creep around and strangle the senses. Maybe it’s just a case of Carlton Melton having overdone the herb – maybe not – but the darkside always was more appealing in any case. Always Even is but more proof. (Rob Gannon, sicmagazine.net)

As evidenced by Axis – the band's fifth album – Mugstar are less inclined to stretch out their grooves over extended periods of time and space as they are to offer more compact bursts of kaleidoscopic noise without sacrificing any notions of melody. Crucially, for an instrumental band, Mugstar retain the ability to maintain interest throughout thanks to a succession of hard-hitting riffs, insistent beats and a constant sense of drama that allows the listener to form a series of personalised images as viewed through the mind's eye.
