Led by guitarist Mario Castelberg, the Lyft Trio has created a fascinating mix of electronic jazz, psychedelic rock, and cinematic landscapes on their third studio album "Nord". The music simmers and boils and offers an exciting genre blend. The improvisation and composition merge seamlessly and form a unity. The Lyft Trio draws from the various musical influences of its members and combines the freedom of jazz, the atmosphere of psychedelic rock, the electronic sound aesthetic, and the song craft of pop. They always find a balance between consonance and dissonance, clear melodies and atmospheric sounds, and simplicity and complexity. If one had to name names, a mixture of Radiohead, Tonbruket, Bill Frisell, and Supersilent comes closest to the music of the Lyft Trio. 

The album "Nord" contains a total of eight compositions by Mario Castelberg, which tell different moods and stories. The song "Das Arvenstübli" invites you to dream and tells the story of someone who is stranded alone in a snowy mountain house. The consonant harmony and dreamy groove create an atmosphere of peace and relaxation. "Aus gutem Grund", on the other hand, gets psychedelic and rocky, with a krautrock-like beat and quirky scales and sounds. With "Iso" and "Birds", the album returns to dreamier and more atmospheric sounds and creates expansive landscapes through sweet melodies. "On Point" then brings a sharp contrast with a tricky rhythm and an electronic improvisation before getting lost again in the endlessness. With "Back or Forth", the album briefly says goodbye to jazz and brings a good-natured pop tune. The ironically meant title "Gefestigte Persönlichkeit" ("firm personality") follows no firm structure but meanders and loses itself, provocatively ending the album and leaving it in silence. Overall, "Nord" is an impressive album that showcases the musical range of the Lyft Trio and underscores their ability to unite different genres and moods.

Compared to Part 1, the second part has more sound design, more production and sounds more full. The ambient aura is reminiscent of epic futuristic battles, with many layers that will tantalize a wide variety of fans. Gerald, who enjoys improvising on the piano, writes all the music and then passes it to Aaron Thier who adds his own style to the drum parts. A cinematic jaunt, full of complexity and energy awaits those curious enough to dive into this fantastic release.

Inside the Cable Temple incorporates progressive rock, Chinese traditional folk, and jazz to create a very warm and inviting musical journey. Most of what you hear on this record is incredibly mellow and ethereal folk rock with the occasional increase in musical intensity in the form of groovy prog rock or smooth jazz. Much of it is the musical equivalent of peacefully floating by on a cloud although there are little surprises here and there that change the pace and scenery.

‘Umbra’ is bookended by the long, spiralling sax lines of ‘Lofoten Dance’ part 1 and 2. Set against a backdrop of sparse bass and wandering African thumb piano, its sonic space perfectly evokes the isolated splendour of the Norwegian archipelago it was inspired by and in many ways the still, mysterious atmosphere that is witnessed during a solar eclipse.

Some of the most beautiful moments of light reside within ‘Caraval’ and ‘Sacral’. The former, a joyous major key drone that blissfully meanders along complemented by a panoply of percussion that has echoes of Popul Vuh at their most ecstatic. The latter is a wonderful expression of serene contemplation based around a simple, ascending two note synthesiser figure that conjures up some of the best ambient works of the ECM catalogue.

Further musical exploration of shadow is represented by the formidable power of ‘Qamar’, whose finale is replete with prayer bells and tribal percussion, bolstered by Whittaker’s multi-part vocal harmonies over a bed of droning synth and ethnic wind instruments - drawing comparisons to the cinematic work of saxophonist Colin Stetson.

Further notable use of vocals is to be found as the album’s centrepiece: ‘Folded Sun’. A deep slice of Kosmiche beauty propelled by Diagonal bandmate Luke Foster’s cyclical drumming, the result is akin to something that Robert Wyatt, Hawkwind and NEU! may have concocted if they had triple booked the same recording studio.

Fans of avant-progressive and post-jazz and rock music like Jaga Jazzist, Mike Oldfield, Electric Masada, Steve Tibbetts, Tortoise, and Cinematic Orchestra will be enthralled. The Wandering feels both cinematic and powerful, beautiful, and dark. The musicians called upon contributed top-notch performances, and while very few of the players had the chance to record together, the resulting ensemble is stunning. The compositions are filled with compelling soundscapes that embrace an array of instrumentation through layers of contrasting but complementary environments like orchestral strings with odd-meter backbeats, or woodwinds floating over synth bass lines. There is a strong rock foundation in heavy grooves, reinforced at times by distorted guitars and screaming melodies. From the album’s first note until the last, the music’s peaks and valleys are sculpted and the arc flows with intention from one song to the next.
