Description/Reviews:

This album sees The Tangent focusing almost entirely on their long format songs or "epics" with only one song being less than 16 minutes long. A very mature sounding record, the band have audibly focused on the compositional structure of this album which in the case of the three long pieces is also highly complex and "thought out". From a luscious and uplifting song about loneliness in Covid lockdown, to a full on 17-minute long jazz/prog/canterbury fusion instrumental, to a darkly electronic story of a homeless woman with shades of Nine Inch Nails, Po90, Japan and Van Der Graaf lurking within. The album's final track is the 4 minute bouncy Motown-style track "Wasted Soul", where the band anticipate a wonderful day in the future when the pandemic is over forever.

‘Proxy’ is a riot of juxtaposing styles, presented in a really direct manner and despite being firmly rooted in the stylistic traits of the Progressive Rock Genre takes some unexpected turnoffs and a major swerve. The albums kicks off with a trademark Tangent prog fantasia based around growling Hammonds, shrieking Synths, whirling guitars and sharp percussive bass - influences of ELP, Egg, Hatfield & the North, Caravan and Camel proudly worn on their sleeves. This 16-minute title track eventually becomes a protest song about the continuing wars that share their name with the song.
But this album features no overall concept. The second track is a sun-drenched Mediterranean fusion instrumental, more Chick Corea than Che Guevara. And the third track is referred to by the band as an attempt to find the missing link between Porcupine Tree and Jamiroquai. By the time we reach the centrepiece epic track ‘The Adulthood Lie’, the rulebook has been left behind and the band are trying to fix the car with whatever is at hand.

The first track on the album A Spark in the Aether is unashamedly full on, uplifting and in your face. Andy’s signature keytar sound introduces the track and then you are a passenger on a fantastic sonic thrill ride. There are hints of Marillion’s ‘Incommunicado’ and ‘Hooks in You’  but this is definitively a Tangent song. Fast paced and with a sack load of joie de vivre at its core, it is a superb modern pop/rock delight with a brilliant keyboard and guitar play-off running throughout. It is entirely obvious that a whole load of fun must have been had recording this track and it will be a stand out in a live set especially the catchy, sing-along chorus.

"It is the most ambitious album we've attempted yet" says Tillison, "our first ever full on concept album which is also our deepest foray into the world of classical/orchestral music that we've hinted at before in songs like "Titanic Calls Carpathia", "The Full Gamut" and "In Earnest" It's great to know we'll be staying with the company that's done us so much good over the years, we need their belief as much as ever."
The single piece is comprised of 3 main movements with a short Overture/Prologue type piece and clocks in (in its current working state) at just less than an hour. The piece has been projected for a good number of years and originally was to have been a direct re-interpretation of Igor Stravinsky's The Rite Of Spring. The piece is lyrically based around a modern ritual in the same way as was The Rite Of Spring. This time, rather than the pastoral Russian landscape that Stravinsky references in his piece, Le Sacre Du Travail focusses on the daily run to work and back that so many billions of people in wealthier countries make in order to maintain a life standard. From the unseen moment where dawn breaks on a wet wintry Tuesday morning on a lonely country road, through the chaos of modern urban traffic, pointless meetings, clocking in, locker rooms, appraisals, boredom, pressure as far as Evening TV and a nightcap before it all starts again, this piece has something to say for most people involved in that ritual. As usual, real, contemporary, no holds barred, gritty writing.
