Description/Reviews:
What a marvelous treat this epic new offering by Norwegian hard rock/doom metal masters Hex A.D. is! Huge chords, thunderous drums, earth-shattering riffs, heartfelt vocals, heaps of melancholy atmospheres, and that warm, analogue sound that is simply irresistible – this charismatic and brilliantly conceived opus simply ticks all the boxes for me. With its psychedelic flavors and progressive touches, Delightful Sharp Edges is so much more than a hard rock, heavy metal or doom metal output; it is original and something different to everything else that is out there.

Description/Reviews:
Drawing expansively not only from classic doom, but also prog rock and grunge among others, they have a brilliant sound that is incredibly hard to pigeonhole into a single subgenre. It’s made for some incredibly broad and eclectic records that have gained the band a sizeable following since the release of their debut self-titled EP in 2015. The band’s second album II: The Ground Below is not only a fine example of this in action for those unfamiliar with their music, but also sees their already expansive sound develop even further, making this their most ambitious work to date.

Description/Reviews
This quartet is composed of the majority of the musicians that used to belong to another group called “La Fin du Monde” and they are based in California. These guys have a sound with light doom nuances with a progressive vibe that fits its purpose. The purpose is to rock your life on a miserable weekday, that is. It will spark energy from within our rotten souls. I can’t stop listening to it.

Line-up
Keith D -  Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Cello, Keyboard, Djembe, Percussion
Nick Smalkowski – Drums
   With
Craig Cirinelli and Bridget Bellavia- Additional backing vocals

Description/Reviews
Describing the lush sound and vivid emotional palette of Kindred Spirits as being basically equal parts Devin Townsend and latter-day Anathema (with maybe a bit of Les Voyages…-era Alcest in there too) is probably a little too reductive, and really doesn’t give enough credit to the striking creative voice and vision of Arctic Sleep’s mainman and multi-instrumental marvel Keith D (who handles everything, including the cello and the djembe, apart from the drums on this album).
But it should, at least, give you a hint about what to expect from these eleven tracks… namely a spellbinding array of moody, progressive riffs, effortlessly evocative melodies, and gorgeously harmonised, utterly heartfelt, vocals which, collectively, combine to form one of the richest and most rewarding musical experiences of the year.

Label: Debemur Morti Productions - DMP0166
Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: November 23, 2018
Tracklist
01. Empty Streets
02. Substance Vortex
03. Respect My Solitude
04. Cloud Seeder
05. Still Yearning
06. Strike Up With The Dawn
07. Transcending Yesterdays
08. Cease The Day

Line-up
James Fogarty - Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Keys
Bernt Sørensen - Guitars
Anders Kobro - Drums
   With
Kåre Sletteberg - Lead Guitar (2), Acoustic Guitar

Description/Reviews
Continuing to refine and perfect their sound while ever expanding it in new directions, “Cease the Day” is a powerful and kaleidoscopic effort. A thunderous undercurrent of melodic riffing drives these songs forward, elements of doom, death, and progressive metal all coming together to form a cohesive whole.

Chilling ambience, psychedelia, avant-garde, and deep soaring vocals ebb and flow to craft a unique sound that truly must be heard to be believed, all before crushing the listener with the band’s most extreme moments since their debut “Heart of the Ages”.

Genre(s)Post Metal, Sludge, Doom
Label: Thrill Jockey
Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: September 21, 2018
Tracklist
1). The Task
2). Attis’ Blade
3). Arcing Silver

Line-up
Aaron Turner (Isis, Old Man Gloom, Mamiffer) - guitars, vocals
Nick Yacyshyn (Baptist) - drums
Brian Cook (Russian Circles, Botch, These Arms Are Snakes) - bass

Description/Reviews
This is a dense and initially daunting record. Comprised of four mind-boggling complex tracks, ranging from the relatively brisk twelve minutes of “Arcing Silver” to the massive opening statement of “The Task” which slowly unfurls over twenty-two hypnotic minutes, “Love In Shadow” is not an easy ride but hugely rewarding.

Description/Reviews
Falling somewhere between experimental, progressive, and doom/post-metal, Los Angeles’ Ancestors thrives on crafting aural journeys “rife with atmosphere, tension, and raw human emotion.” ... the sequence isn’t as multifarious, colorful, or aggressive as its predecessors overall; yet, the band transforms their newfound limitations into an exceptional testament to the expressive power of polished minimalism and unified flow. As such, it’s an analogous yet idiosyncratic new offering that proves how vital they remain as a trio.

Description/Reviews
“Prog Goth” is applicable here — the album’s opening cut, “The Wound” is a supremely daunting and/or risky and/or polarizing 19 minutes in length. That’s about five Katatonia songs in one. Nevertheless, it’s indicative of how The Eternal likes to operate — their songs are spread out like a parachute on a field, lots of ruffles (i.e. riffs), lumps (different type of vocals) and girth (space lent for atmosphere).

Abraham can be brutal, then melodic and then atmospheric. The band have used the many facets of their style to separate the album into 4 periods: Anthropocene, Phytocene, Myocene and Oryktocene. The overall theme and concept of the album is the end of times which is something that lends itself well to what the band sound like.

Awooga "Conduit"

Country: UK
Genre(s): Alternative/Post/Doom/Sludge/Progressive Metal, Grunge
LabelRockosmos
Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: April 20, 2018

3. Waterhole (3:33)
4. Blue Rose (4:44)

6. Witness (11:09)
7. Otherside (6:47)

Total Time 40:27

Line-up
Tam Ali - Bass, Vocals
Taran Ali - Drums
James Borrowdale - Guitar

Description/Reviews
Creating a hybrid metal-based sound of doom, grunge, sludge and progressive metal, Awooga floored at least half of the competition with their debut EP ‘Alpha’. Taking cues from Deftones, Tool and Amplifier, the band created a sound that went far beyond being just a composite of its influences; a brilliant technical ability and a melodic vocal often contrasting the heaviness made it very compelling listening.
Approximately eighteen months on, the Sheffield-based riff-meisters have created something rather special in their first full length album. ‘Conduit’ takes everything that was great about the EP and refines it and improves upon it, but without any temptation to make it more commercial.
