Description/Reviews
I am happy to report that Shattered Skies, for the most part, is successful in defining itself from the pack; and a large amount of credit must go to Ian Rockett who takes on the duty as both guitar and keyboardist. Ian Rockett will hereby be referred to by the name of ‘Ol’ Man Chuggers’. Ol’ Man Chuggers being in charge of both lead guitar and keyboards leads to a superb synergy within songs which leads to both aspects working in conjunction; with one never taking precedence over the other. Instead, the low-mixed ambiance lays a true strength to the foundations which accentuates some truly interesting polyrhythms and some effective chugging hooks. For an album which holds so many elements, it’s the restraint that lends the compositions their true strength, with some wonderful symphonic piano lending respite from the hooks, while being used sparingly enough to never overstay its welcome or become formulaic. This can be said of the whole band, in fact; no one element or instrumentalist takes the limelight – instead, all of the members harmonise together under one big lemonlight.
