Description/Reviews
Much like its predecessor from last year it chugs along rather nicely, but now interspersed with a few “dreamier” mellow tracks scattered throughout the CD. For those who like this sort of head-on spacerock no matter which Hawkwind camp it is from, and crave more, go ahead and get it, you won’t be disappointed. I am not so sure Dream fulfills my Spacerock Destiny as any better than We Are One. I even find it slightly weaker than the first effort. Stand-out songs are the opener, Dream A Dream, and the track Elemental Mind which seems to borrow a lot melody-wise from Hawkwind’s song Hippy, the punky Nowhere Everywhere, and the progressive-psychedelic closer Psychic Eyes, which clocks in at 7 minutes.

Description/Reviews
The phrase used on the information listing in the reviews pool here at Echoes & Dust, described From Tomorrow by The Oscillation as sounding like “Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd”. Bloody hell, they weren’t half right. Well...... for the first track on the album ‘Corridor (Part One)’ at least anyway. With more than a passing nod (more like a hearty handshake and tongue kiss) to 'Interstellar Overdrive' from The Floyd, The Oscillation begin their journey through psychedelic rock in a comfortable fashion.

“Avant-garde experimentalist progressive metal”, and you immediately know what to prepare for. Often fast stochastic rhythms with technical licks, interspaced by chamber music or orchestral pieces (or jazz, fugue, etc.), all filled with crazy angry screams, or just plain mad vocal harmonies.

Description/Reviews
With their third album Nubium Swimtrip, recorded at Abbey Road, Tonbruket reach dizzying new heights with a rich sonic soundscape that mixes the hypnotic textures and grooves of contemporary post-rock instrumentalism with elements from post-1970's prog and space rock, all within the framework of their own lyrical, positively tuneful compositions. Following the tragic loss of Esbjorn Svensson, Dan Berglund has been further guided by the spirit of the trio s innovative swansong recording Leuocyte released in 2008, but with a shift of emphasis towards the rock music he has always loved, with influences from his hard rock background as well as contemporary bands such as Radiohead and Sigur Rós. The dialogue between rock and jazz has not always been so tasteful, but Tonbrucket don't fall into the trap of indulging in flashy solos or any kind of speed-freak machismo. Quite the opposite. Theirs is a less is more approach, sticking closely to the essence of a composition's tone, melody and groove.

Giuseppe A. Olivini (Yugen) - percussion

Description/Reviews
7 songs, 7 instrumental pieces. 7 vocal melodies hanging on a delicate acoustic texture, and 7 brief abstract scenes. With the collaboration of various Yugen’s members, Francesco Zago focuses on song form and lyrics, building around Elaine Di Falco’s unique voice a sonic thread made with acoustic and electric guitars, piano (Maurizio Fasoli), vibes (Jacopo Costa) percussions (Giuseppe Olivini) and thin layers of electronics (Paolo Botta, Pat Moonchy). Two famous pieces by John Dowland complete the cd, reminding the distant but crucial legacy of English songs from XVII century. A delicate collection, sometimes dark and forlorn, with an extreme attention to timbrical and dynamical nuances and musical breath.

Description/Reviews
Musically, we’re taken through a journey at sea full of epic moments punctuated by agile transitions. A lot of different degrees of heaviness are explored in Forty Days at Sea, which cover a wide range of the musical spectrum. I’m a sucker for concept albums, so I enjoyed the great amount of detail that was put into turning this idea into something concrete, including the excellent cover art, which I usually never notice. There’s even a story to go with the album, which features Redding, a starving sailor who battles hunger-induced hallucinations, traitors and imprisonment. The album is part two of a trilogy (with parts one and three yet to come), so I can’t wait to find out what the rest of the story is.

Description/Reviews
Led by composer, drummer and three-time Grammy nominee John Hollenbeck, The Claudia Quintet have quietly but firmly and definitively recast jazz into shimmering new shapes inflected by classical minimalism, new music, progressive rock and post-rock. They are one of the most influential stylists on other musicians in cutting-edge jazz today and the sound of jazz and what jazz can be in our time has changed because of their sound and stance.
Celebrating 15 years of work together with the release of September, this NYC ensemble’s sound continues to explore the edge without alienating the mainstream, proving that genre-defying music can be for everyone.

Description/Reviews
Space Gypsy strays little from Turner's roots. Most of the music is marked by moog, synth, and mellotron layers sounding wispy and eerie like the soundtrack to Forbidden Planet part two. The rhythm section exists to create an insistent and pulsing forward motion. Then there's Turner's subdued vocals, singing about space, aliens, ancient Mayans, and more otherworldly visions with bizarre, often nonsensical, lyrics.

Description/Reviews
According to the band, the goal on Passing Through the Wall is to induce a trance-like state in the listener through repetition, non-conventional melody and challenging song structure. The compositions are based around large cycles of layered poly-rhythmic patterns against octave displaced melodies; the individual parts working together to create dense, pulsating textures.

Description/Reviews
The album displays technical musicianship, catchy songwriting and polished production in an 11 track/hour long package. After the first listen, it is clear that the songs appeal to a vast audience. They have moments of technical prog mastery, moments of pop-rock sing-along catchiness and moments of soft ballad-esque moodiness all atop a foundation of heavy metal. The band's sound incorporates a blend of alternative rock, progressive rock, classical, jazz & latin into their heavy metal compositions. Many songs include strong dynamic shifts in feeling and/or genre blending.

Cobra fakir is a snake charmer, who uses carefully concocted melodies to put the mighty reptile under a sort of sonic spell. That’s an apt analogy for what will happen to even the hardiest ears upon introduction to Miriodor’s newest eccentric-but-bewitching batch of tunes.

Description/Reviews
‘La Voz Quebrada’ fuses elements of progressive rock with post-rock to create a very intense and charged listening experience. Much of the album feels like a ‘traditional’ post-rock album experience, though the statement can’t be taken at face value, as there’s a lot of other ideas and effects going into the music than just the traditional post-rock elements.

Description/Reviews
Upon the initial listening session with El Paraiso Records latest band signing Psicomagia and their self titled debut album, there is no question this band has officially been passed the progressive rock torch.  Landing in the era of 1968-1970 when Soft Machine, Magma, The Miles Davis Group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Tony Williams Lifetime and many other were innovating the foundational basis to the 70′s rich fusion movements, Psicomagia bleeds with heart wrenching layers of amplified progressive psychedelia.

Description/Reviews
With “Alibi philosophical” Pandora takes a complete risk, making the most complex work of their career, without any simple commercial expedient. The mixture of various musical genres is here in full, in the purest progressive spirit, and is reflected in the surreal album cover and in the rest of the artwork, courtesy of the young artist Emoni Viruet. Songs “Apollo” and “Tony il Matto” (Tony the Fool) are the most experimental tracks, often suspended in between jazz-rock and avant-garde.

Carlton Melton "Always Even"

Country: USA
Sub GenrePsychedelic
LabelAgitated Records
Release dateSeptember 23, 2013 (UK/EU), October 1, 2013 (USA)
Tracklist
1. Slow Wake (5:25)
2. Keeping On (7:46)
3. Spiderwebs (4:40)
4. Sarsen (9:28)
5. The Splurge (10:30)

Line-up
Andy Duvall - Guitar, Drums
Clint Golden - Bass Guitar, Drums
Rich Millman - Guitar, Synth

Description/Reviews
Things start slowly with the gentle lappings of “Slow Wake” – a mind massage aboard the holodeck of the Enterprise, the track’s amorphous landscape swirling together with producer John McBain of Monster Magnet‘s extensive echoplex delay. The kraut-rocking “Keeping On” then sets the dial for deep space via its crunching bassline and sci-fi synth dither, exploding latterly with brain-busting guitar riffs. Next, the red-eyed “Spiderwebs” explores the same synth-driven, “psychedelically-enhanced drone” as helped made Photos Of Photos a success.
The two ten-minute closers are harder, peeling back layers of chugging kraut to expose phaser battles, righteous shred and thick streams of dark paranoia that slowly creep around and strangle the senses. Maybe it’s just a case of Carlton Melton having overdone the herb – maybe not – but the darkside always was more appealing in any case. Always Even is but more proof. (Rob Gannon, sicmagazine.net)
