There’s a total of 45-minutes of music on Parts of Animals, five mostly instrumental tracks, four of which are longer. The music begins in a soft and subtle manner with low throbbing sounds building in volume until that becomes something else and then it changes again, and again, going from melodic to more dissonant until by the 10:00 minute mark it’s a cacophony of noise just barely hanging on to the core melody all the while the synth loop continues unabated. It all collapses at the 10:30 mark and recapitulates some earlier musical riffs and melodies. The music of The Glutton is the kind that sucks you into a vortex, tempting you in the beginning to get on a musical ride and as you acquiesce and get on the ride you are unprepared for where it will take you and yet you willingly submit. The music is exhilarating with its mix of cold and sparse sonic landscapes setting an eerie foundation for driving guitars bass and drums to intrude upon. The second track “Idiot Tornado” [12:11] fairly explodes into action from the start and keeps up the momentum of the name while instruments and sounds come in and out of the picture inserting complex riffs or even melodies, drifting in and out with an almost improvised feel.Media/Samples
The music of The Glutton is loaded with counterpoint and polyrhythms and oozes a mix of angular prog but it never fails to come back to a core melodic vibe. It may take you out on the edge for a while but it never leaves you out there. It’s challenging music, that’s for sure. The music of Parts for Animals is adventurous and not for the faint of heart, but it’s also a very rewarding listen. Fascinating stuff! (Jerry Lucky)
