Description/Reviews
From track one, aptly named “Rise Up,” the album is off to a great start. The album ‘rises up’ to a big opener about standing up for what’s right. It’s a heavier track, with all sides playing hard. It’s not overpowering and equally shows off each member of the band. “Rise Up” is reminiscent of 30 Seconds to Mars meeting Rush; not a bad combination at all.
“Mirror Lakes” is trickier to decipher. Are we to interpret the song to be about people out of reach or the real person underneath the skin they present? People seeing what they want to see? Whatever it is, it is a fine song. Softer, but still possessing power, it is maybe more of a traditional “prog” song in its form.
“Anything And Everything” does what it says on the tin. Included within the Floyd-esque track is a mix of musical styles featuring great keyboard work along with heavy bass and rock riffs.
“Blue December Morning” is a slow starter, metronomic, and soft while you wait in anticipation. It speeds up slightly until the finale featuring some exceptional drumming.
“Ghost Community” follows. The band’s anthem is sure to have live audiences singing along, and the community-oriented message is delivered clear for all to hear.
Title track “Cycle Of life” closes the album. It is an epic at nearly sixteen minutes in length, though it passes quickly and holds your rapt attention. The song has all the markings of a prog song from mood and time changes – like having four seasons in one day.
The same can be said for the whole album, too. There isn’t a bad track, and all songs are well written. The band members, each possessing great talent, are equally represented in this beautiful community.

Description/Reviews
Following an eight-year absence, the Italian rock/progressive group Deus Ex Machina bursts back onto the international scene with Devoto.Devoto retains Deus Ex Machina’s distinctive blend of fiery, complexly designed music, passionate bel canto vocals, virtuosic instrumental performances and analogue-heavy textures. Here as before, DEM’s music combines both the energy and beauty of early Mahavishnu Orchestra and Larks' Tongues in Aspic-era King Crimson; classic 70s hard rock influences from AC/DC, Deep Purple and, most unmistakably, Led Zeppelin; hints of RIO-tinged avant-progressive; and the unmistakable Mediterranean vibe of fellow 'Rock Progressivo Italiano' combos like PFM. But just as each successive album has represented something different yet still unmistakably, unequivocally DEM, Devoto takes a more direct, immediate approach: a more hard-hitting, gut-punching, visceral Deus Ex Machina.
Devoto may have been a long time coming, but it's been more than worth the wait. Deus Ex Machina continues to prepare even more new material while rehearsing for upcoming live dates. Prepare yourself to revel in the gripping punch and the more direct - yet still compositionally dense and intense - music of Devoto; like every album in its remarkable career, both a consolidation of what has come before...and a clear signpost of things to come.

Description/Reviews
On Plastic House on Base of Sky, Kayo Dot fully embraces Coffins on Io’s electronic allusions, incorporating a variety of synthesizers (many of them vintage analog) to create another work of ambition and magnitude that fuses the explosive musical imagination of a band like Magma with the forward-thinking experimentalism of Conrad Schnitzler or Morton Subotnick. This 40 minute-long, 5-song LP goes beyond the future-noir theme of Coffins on Io and is an innovative and biomechanical work of art. Think seemingly impossible architecture, dead satellites, trashed space stations, wasted old lady heroin addicts hanging out by cheap motel pools, broken people, and a hopeless dead and polluted world transitioning into artifice and mechanism and reacting by being self-destructive, either to the point of utter obliteration or a glorious transhuman condition.

Red Wierenga – accordion
Matt Moran – vibraphone
Drew Gress – acoustic bass
Chris Speed – clarinet and tenor sax

Description/Reviews
Short doesn’t necessarily mean simple. Drummer-composer John Hollenbeck acrobatically explores the dichotomy between brevity and complexity on Super Petite, the eighth release by the critically-acclaimed, proudly eccentric Claudia Quintet. The oxymoronic title of the new album, captures the essence of its ten new compositions, which pack all of the wit and virtuosity that listeners have come to expect from the Claudia Quintet into a shorter time-frame.
Hollenbeck’s uncategorizable music – which bridges the worlds of modern jazz and new music in surprising and inventive ways - is realized by Claudia’s longstanding line-up.

Description/Reviews
Driven by a need to communicate the indescribable, and drawing on influences ranging from composer Ralph Vaughan Williams to Sigur Ros, Nick Drake, and Meshuggah, “Discontinuance” is the debut album from Ghost Medicine, the working name of Georgia based guitarist and composer Jared Leach.Consisting of seven tracks, and exploring themes related to the contradictory and inexpressible nature of the human experience, “Discontinuance” is a remarkably developed and engaging statement from a hitherto unknown voice. Demonstrating a deep knowledge of both alternate tunings and creative guitar effects, Jared Leach’s expressive, original guitar work is the binding element throughout the album, alternating between, sensitive layered finger picked acoustic guitar, to fiery and imaginative solos.

Clocking in at ober 12 minutes, opener ‘Keep On Keepin’ On Space Truckin’ ‘ has few f*cks to give, and gives them very reluctantly. Once the drums start, there is no stopping. The guitars chime and grind together, the electronics hover behind it all. Truckin’ is definitely the word for this. But this truck, grubby as it is, has hyperspace capability, the kind that has you looking through the front viewscreens as a cosmic slitscan conduit swirls past. Can the the tachograph keep up?

Description/Reviews
After two recent highly-acclaimed releases with his Rocket Scientists project, Norlander now presents the follow-up to his 2009 solo epic The Galactic Collective released in several forms including a live DVD/CD set. Surreal continues in that spirit with traditional rock band instrumentation fronted by Norlander’s own timeless, signature keyboards. Surreal gives both a nod to the past and puts an eye on the future with lush analog soundscapes, real living human grooves, and unforgettable melodic lead work that will keep the songs playing in the listener’s head long after the music stops. Like The Galactic Collective, Surreal is mostly an instrumental affair with 5 tracks driven by keyboard and guitar melodies. But there is a sixth song, the title track, that features vocals by Norlander’s chanteuse spouse Lana Lane.

Carson Schnackenberg

Description/Reviews
Acrylic Road started out as a practice template, in every conceivable way, for The Arborist's Carson Schnackenburg. Schnackenburg is a drummer, by trade, and tracks like album opener "The Fifth Acre" were created solely for Schnackenburg to play drums along to. You'd never know it, from the wispy, neo-classical, prog-and-metal infused art rock. It's sensitive, delicate, intuitive and personal - not what you would expect from a bash-along backing track.

Line-up
Randy McStine (Lo-Fi Resistance): Guitars, Vocals
Jonas Reingold (Karmakanic, The Flower Kings): Bass, Backing Vocals
Nick D’Virgilio (Big Big Train, Spocks Beard): Drums, Vocals

Description/Review
The music skirts around the edges of progressive rock, leaning towards the alternative side of Spock’s Beard, or the more populist moments from power trios such as Mr. Big, Rush, or King’s X. Alternative, progressive, pop, jam band…The Fringe exists at the edge of each of these genres–or, better–at the intersection of them all taken together. Virtuoso musicianship is always on display, and there are plenty of time-signature changes, but the band focuses on driving riffs, melodic hooks, and lots of two- and three-part harmonies.

Description/Reviews
Not Blood Paint produce a fierce sound with strong guitar lines and heavy bass riffs. In between badass eruptions of groove, the band keeps thing sly with crisp cutoffs and phenomenal builds. Vocals drive the sonic exploration and turn rapturous as backup vocalists thicken and accent just the right chords at just the right times. Each song is full of surprises: riffs I never expected, interjected where I never expected them, each so apropos yet so distinct that I’m often amazed that I’m listening to the same song from one section to the next.

Description/Reviews
Founding members Ilwoo Lee, Eunyong Sim, and Bomi Kim studied Korean folk and classical music in college, but they fuse the dramatic emotionalism of those styles with those of various rock traditions. At their lightest, the massive songs approach gray cloud post-rock and jazz ambience, and reach into the droning noise of sludgy metal at their darkest.

Christian Andreu - guitars
Jean-Michel Labadie - bass
Mario Duplantier - drums

Description/Reviews
It's clear from the very unorthodox opening track of Magma that something about Gojira is very different this time around. "The Shooting Star" is a sharp left-turn from the normally high-energy and driving tracks Gojira chooses to open their albums, opting instead for a more contemplative and introspective approach, and it more heavily relies on a tool the band has used in the past, but is far more intentional and deliberate this time around: clean vocals. Joe Duplantier's haunting voice carries above the hypnotic melodies and driving rhythms, bringing the listener into an almost trance-like state before bludgeoning them upside the head with the more orthodox riffs of "Silvera." The catchy leads and chorus of this track make it accessible enough for the new metalhead, but the crunchy main riff will satisfy even the most seasoned metal listener.
