Description/Reviews:
L’Abysse Des Pensees is the band’s first release and as such it’s a winner that will certainly have great appeal to fans of complex, heavier symphonic styled Progressive Rock.L’Abysse Des Pensees features eight tracks ranging in length from just over five minutes in length to one that’s a little over eleven-minutes. The disc starts off with a deliciously catchy instrumental entitled “Planeshift” [5:06] featuring some interesting musical change-ups going from heavy guitar riffs to slick keyboard lines crafted in a kind herky-jerky fashion making for a great introduction to the band’s instrument ability. The next song, while starting off deceptively softer quickly gains momentum becoming somewhat heavier thanks to the crunchy guitars. There’s even a bit of growling in the vocal department but it’s restrained and mixed low so it doesn’t really detract from the overall proggy-ness. Vocals are in French which always presents a kind of exotic nature to the musical proceedings. Track three, “Les Murs De Ma Folie” [8:22] starts off with a more acoustic feel, focusing on acoustic guitar strumming and pounding drums brought together with great keyboard backgrounds and a lovely vocal melody and harmonies. The musical structure of Shatters’compositional style is one that builds and subsides repeatedly, grand and sweeping one minute, then softer the next, creating drama and tension along the way. It’s all wrapped up with a distinct symphonic feel given the music’s multi-part structure and arrangement.Shatters have a very unique sound and while like any band they’ve been influenced by others before them, those influences are not in any way obvious. These guys don’t sound like anyone else. If you like your Prog with more than a hint of aggression, but balanced with some pleasant acoustic musicianship and warm and pleasing melodies I think you’ll really enjoy L’Abysse Des Pensees.
