Marcello Rosa - cello (5, 7)

Description/Reviews:
Armonite was formed in 1996. They released their first album in 1999, but eventually split up, so Jacopo could follow his career as a classical violinist and violin teacher, while Paolo started working in the music administration. It wouldn’t be until 15 years later that they would unite to form a new band while borrowing the name of their old one.
“Working with a team like this is fantastic,” says Fosso, composer of the album, “Everyone’s unique skills and talents added something special to the album and the final result is powerful. We tried to give the album one sonority, but also characterize each track with a different setting.
“For example, in the song “Suitcase war” you’ll see a rejection of how our life has changed after becoming workaholics. Whereas “Insert Coin”, featuring 8-bit sounds by Swedish demoscener Anders ‘Goto80′ Carlsson, is a tribute to 80’s and 90’s arcade coin-ops.”
Each track captures the various passions found in the band. “Satellites” is a reflection on space exploration and technology, “’G’ as in Gears” features Samuel Gomper’s famous speech, “What does the Working Man Want?” and “Die Grauen Herren” recalls the Men in Grey from Michael Ende’s novel, Momo. The Sun is New Each Day is a whirlwind of sounds, themes and emotions. “Connect Four”, a track composed by Bigi, finds its sound in a protest against gambling addictions. While the track “Sandstorm” is a look at the living energy that can be found in Marrakech.
“We hope the album connects you to the world around you,” says Fosso, “Tracks like “Le temps qui fait ta rose” from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupery suggest ‘It’s the time you spent on your rose that makes your rose so important.’ Yet, the track “Slippery Slope” explores that unclear side of the human soul.” (progmetalzone.com)

Dale Gorham - Bass
   With
Sally Garozzo (3)
John Mitchell (7)
Maria Gardner (10)

Description/Reviews:
The first song from this album was a demo of 'A Principle God', a song which definitely showed a much softer approach to their sound, but nevertheless was a superb song in its own right. This song is driven more by melody and Ashe's vocals than by the rhythm work.
Despite this, the whole album does a good job of balancing songs driven by melody and rhythm. The intro track, 'Ortus', is one of the best opening tracks to an album I've heard this year, with plenty of atmosphere and a huge build up at the end which leads into the second track and first proper single, 'Inner Child'. This is a very different song to the two aforementioned songs, with more concentration on the guitar work which is heavier, but is never overpowered. Not only does this band succeed in creating a very cinematic atmosphere, they never drown out that atmosphere with outrageously heavy guitar work. It's an album where balance between heaviness and atmosphere is executed brilliantly.

Line-up:

   With
Jan Hammer - keyboards
Igor Len - keyboards
Steve Smith (Journey) - drums

Description/Reviews:
Vortex offers a big, full-band sound from the outset. Nicely mixed and mastered, the songs do not bury instruments: dynamics of the songs are allowed to shine, bringing instruments to the foreground when needed and allowing them to retire into the shadows when necessary. That said, this is definitely a guitar-forward album set, with almost every song featuring the guitar very prominently (and with very few breaks). Schon handled guitar as well as bass guitar duties for the recording. With many songs over five minutes and at least one exceeding ten minutes long; this is not a set of tunes created for the vapid “top40″ radio-ready crowd. Given the length of time each song remains on the airwaves, the more comprehensive, deep-listening type of fan is encouraged. The music is overall fairly relaxed, with lots of flourishes and passages of high-energy, high speed guitar.

Description/Reviews:
Barcelona band Lubianka, featuring former members of Venus Anadiomena, have released their second album, Cerimтnies. They begin with a basis in psych-rock, though the overall sound is eclectic, with an experimental edge, and looks to the future as much as the past. Fins Que El Sol combines experimental music, spacerock, funk, jazz, and heavy psych-rock. There's plenty of freeform improvisation and intense noise, but shaped into a coherent whole. Sa Clau combines bendy, surreal aspects and hypnotic repetition along with a style perhaps best described as psychedelic shoegaze. On Els Sants Es... begins with a spiritual, meditative sound, combining Indian-influenced music with relaxing drones, before giving way to a mixture of hazy psych-rock with drawn-out vocals, fuzzed-out wah-wah, spacey bleepery, shamanistic chanting, and heavy riffage. Ouroboros starts off as a chilled-out blend of drone, spacerock and ambient, before morphing into a wild psychedelic jam based around heavy guitar and organ, interspersed with echoey Om chanting conjuring up a vivid scene from a Himalayan monastery. Stockhausen Melancolic Jazz combines cinematic neo-classical music, electronic experimentation, and jazz of both the melodic and freeform varieties. An impressive, forward-looking album bursting with new and creative ideas (blissaquamarine.net)
