In "The Angel and the Hourglass", Prophets of War have again delivered an immersive soundscape of clashing extremes, both in the music and the lyrical themes. From subtle jazz or folk music inspired riffs, transitioning smoothly to extreme death and black metal, contrast and dynamics are an ever-present trademark throughout this album. The lyrics also reflect this use of light and shade, centred thematically around the near-death experience of front man Paul Jeanrenaud as a teenager. The ongoing process of reflection in the face of life's often harsh realities and struggles, creates an emotional tug-of-war between sadness, loss, spirituality and hope.
