Description/Reviews:

On the basis of opener "Pathkeeper", a cynic might anticipate an album full of mildly progressive metalcore with big, shiny choruses. Fear not, cynics, because INTERLOPER's debut is ferociously original, at least in modern metal terms, and owes virtually nothing to the sterile mainstream. Instead, this feels like a newly minted form of prog metal, underpinned by the furious technicality that one expects from the men involved, but very pointedly focused on songcraft and the seamless weaving of textures and atmospherics. Although there is nothing remotely retro about these songs, there is a very RUSH-like sense of liberated ingenuity to their structures, with that magpie-like snaffling of disparate elements driving everything exuberantly forward.

Not the least are heavy and intense, both modern and technical, but also dark and foreboding. An initial spin of the seven song, near 50 minute, album reveals a rather simple formula: aggressive riffs with an ambitious rhythm section wrapped in synth orchestration for even more intense density, with all a things leading to epic, technical guitar solos.

Eschewing modern prog-rock norms, there are no ‘epics’ here, or lengthy, dry showcases of technical prowess. The 11 tracks are tight and concise, and rely heavily on mood and texture to deliver some memorable pieces – in fact, a few of these became earworms rather quickly. There’s an irregular sound to Boros’ vocals that took a few spins to adjust to, an almost latter-day ‘Ozzy’-sounding double-tracked thing that some could find off-putting on the first spin, but which gradually falls into place and sits comfortably alongside the music.
