Description/Reviews
Some time set in the future, after a series of nuclear wars and natural disasters, the survivors of mankind are forced to live in tunnels underground since the atmosphere is unbreathable. They must also fight a species of "monsters" called "Wraiths" which came to be as a result of human genetic manipulation and experiments.
The story starts with a group of survivors fighting their way to the last relatively peaceful and self-sustaining city on Earth: Balad. After they walk throught its gates, Alistair, one of them, reminisces about the past and how humankind dragged themselves to such a desperate situation.
Simon, the scientist, an odd-looking character, helps these men to find a weapon against the Wraiths and is joined for his journey to "Witches' Pond", the island where the solution is to be found (a substance created by silver birds on the isolated piece of land). After they get hold of this "antidote", Greg socialises with the former king's daughter ("Flight Over Water") in a hopeless attempt to grow love out of chaos.
When they're back they prepare for the final battle against the Wraiths ("Counter-attack") and, with the enemy gone, people rejoice in a "Last Song" to celebrate the return to the surface. However, we are left wondering whether the victory was so and if humans could in fact live together in peace again.
