...kicking off the album is honestly the only track I am not all that fond of. “Immortal” is a very aggressive, metal-core type track, featuring harsh vocals and clean singing. ... Instrumentally, it is a sound song, but only shines when the vocals aren’t featured. Vocalist Sindre Antonsen has a very unique, sharp edge to his voice, and I absolutely love it… except here. This does him no justice, and is not a good way to introduce possible new listeners to what the band is all about.
   Now, I’d like to redirect this review to a more positive light. The rest of the album is a solid progressive release, and a few steps up from anything the band has released previously.

Something a number of American progressive/power metal acts seem to be managing in excess lately is the idea that you can be uplifting without being overly bubbly, and Chaos Frame nails that notion home with a one-ton hammer. There are no “Heavy Metal Hamsters” or squirrelly circus jigs within a hundred miles of these dudes. Outside of the opening track, every song flashes moments where things seamlessly break off for a stretch of surprisingly dense or FAST execution that strikes with as much oomph as Brian Blessed charging atop a Clydesdale. For comparison’s sake, think Pharaoh, Falconer, Manticora and Spirit of Ukko era Kiuas all balled into one. Now add one of the better vocal performances this side of a Daniel Heiman-fronted Lost Horizon/Heed record and you’ve got the basic gist.

I always get excited when “symphonic/progressive metal” comes up in a band description because I immediately know I can expect something beyond the scope of the ordinary. And that is why it was with great fervor that I approached Oblivion, the debut release from Exxiles, due out in May. Given it’s a new project boasting members and guest contributors from bands like Symphony X, Savatage, Trans-Siberian Orchestra and Ayreon, among others, I felt there was the promise of something grand with this album.
After listening to the record several times straight through, I’m not as excited about the album as I once was, although I’ll grant that for many, Oblivion will be thoroughly enjoyable. The core musical elements are solid, competently performed and well-engineered. It’s a solid metal record with obvious roots in the styles pioneered by the bands mentioned above and along with sonically satisfying orchestral elements. Tracks like “Introspective” and “Dictator of Trust” are dynamic, heavy and full of everything you’d expect from a super-group with the collective influences that Exxiles have.

They play a heavy yet melodic brand of progressive metal, and Revolution is a double disc with over 90 minutes of music.
With The Source, it begins with a haunting piano, with Quicho's vocals coming in shortly after. His vocals use an almost phaser like effect, which can sound a little weird to someone not used to it. Though soon afterwards he shows his strong vocal range. The next two songs offer something a little bit different, with a huge melodic chorus during Pale Horse that showcases some great drumming from Cabrales and vocals from Quicho. With a little title like The Waltz Of Death you might expect a symphonic intro, and it does, with a waltz to boot! After that intro, the song is a big melodic song with some nice guitar solos, and tempo changes as well. New Day is a haunting slower melodic song, that really highlights Quicho song. This song you will either love or hate his vocals, but the vocal melody matches the song perfectly. Some great instrumentation as well mid song, and an added heaviness heard midway adds a dynamic to the song. Tears of Blood and The Resistance are two mid to faster paced songs, with the latter having a great straight-ahead guitar riff, that easily induces headbanging. The added keyboards in the beginning of The Resistance definitely gives the song a progressive feel to it. Some great drumming, with certain notes being accented more than others, gives the song an aggressive feeling, though the song itself is very melodic. Welcome To America is a song you will want to listen to the lyrics for, especially if you live in America. The last song on disc one is a cover of The Beatles classic, Eleanor Rigby. While this song has been covered numerous times, I really did enjoy this progressive metal take on it. At just barely over two minutes long, it definitely is short and sweet.

Divided Multitude’s style is that of roaring (sometimes literally), high energy melodic progressive metal that flirts with power metal at times (see the chorus to “2 4 7”). Singer Sindre Antonsen has a voice that reminds me a bit of Ecki Singer (formerly of Silverlane), while his style sounds more akin to that of Nils K. Rue (Pagan’s Mind) or even Robert Stjärnström (Machinae Supremacy)  at various points throughout the album. An interesting combination to be sure, but I find Antonsen to be quite a capable singer.

Great supporting key work, from bright, spacey tones to Hammond organ, permeates the album, and is the most often-featured form of instrumentation. In many cases, the guitar work on Feed On Your Misery tends to be almost solely rhythmic. In a sense, I would say that while this album is fairly heavy, it is not terribly dense, and is actually quite easily to digest by progressive metal standards. Take the titular opener (after the instrumental “Esperanto”) for example, which has enough hooks to capture the attention of power metal fans.
