The result is a seamless blend of compositions and collective improvisation that roves way beyond the usual generic categorisations making the album hard to pin down as either jazz or rock. Perhaps that’s as it should be for a sound that hovers somewhere between these and other more diverse stylistic influences.

It's jazz; but sort of "anti-jazz," too. It's progressive, yet clearly supersedes any preexisting templates or traditional standards. It's avant-garde, while soaring above and beyond typical confines, there, as well. And it's 'free jazz,' but with preconceived structure of sorts.

Recorded live in the studio, every song is a mesmerizing journey, weaving seamlessly between various coarse and fine textures, where moments of tranquil harmony magically morph into spells of delightfully chaotic dissonance, stampeding one minute, and tip-toeing, the next.

 “I wouldn't put it in any specific category” says Wingfield. “Most of the tracks on Tales From the Dreaming City are based firmly around a central melody and chord progression. To my ears, the melodic approach has something in common with the open lyricism of a lot of ECM jazz and harmonically it's somewhere between that and classical music. There are elements of rock, and with the classical influences I guess you could say it crosses over into progressive rock. But there's also a lot of improvisation going on.”

Lighthouse is a companion album to the mighty fine The Stone House, released earlier in the year but actually recorded before it during a marathon session in 2016, from which three albums will eventually emerge blinking into the uncaring daylight. The absence of bassist Yaron Stavi from this session sees his lower register taken by Markus Reuter’s Touch Guitar, and for whatever reason, this improvised creature is more of a progressive-experimental rock beast than the jazz animal of The Stone House, but this is powerful and feral rock of a kind that is flung out on a limb, billions of miles from conventionality.

From the album's opening chords, it is immediately apparent that this is a very special outing. This trio possess a chemistry of the most perspicacious and unpretentious variety. The music is enticing and ethereal -- with Wingfield's articulate vocabulary and unique vision for his instrument clearly in evidence, singing high above the palatial profferings of fellow messengers, Stavi and Sirkis. This is supreme melodic "avant jazz", where any lines separating music and art vanish, as three extraordinary oracles bare their souls, follow their instincts and squeeze out every ounce of emotion and grandeur from the album's nine glistening tracks.
Throughout "Proof of Light" the listener is enveloped and transported, soaring along with the music as it seeks out new, previously-untrodden sonic destinations. Mark Wingfield has crafted an exquisite masterwork: majestic, and in many ways reminiscent of ECM's golden years! It is an album of exceeding faculty, whose strength lies in the bold, pioneering approach of its participants and their unwavering trust in their own individual and corporate intuitions. This is gloriously sensitive, nuanced trio work, with a preeminent level of musical communication that borders on the telepathic.
