Dreadnought "Emergence"

Country: USA
Genre(s)Eclectic Progressive Rock/Metal
LabelProfound Lore
Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: May 10, 2019
Tracklist
1. Besieged

Line-up
Kelly Schilling - guitar, flute, clean and harsh vocals
Jordan Clancy - drums, alto/tenor saxophone
Kevin Handlon - bass, mandolin
Lauren Vieira - keys, clean vocals

Description/Reviews
For their fourth long player, DREADNOUGHT follow-up their 2017 A Wake In Sacred Waves acclamation with an album that takes their singular multiplex and pictorial sound to new sonic realms even more heavily textile, complex, and vastly designed.  Emergence sees the four-piece delving more into heavier and darker sonic territory as well, an aspect that was evident with A Wake... but has become fully realized with Emergence.

Description/Reviews
Black metal. Progressive rock. And everything inbetween. The debut (and sole?) album of
Italian / Norwegian trio ORGAN: is just that – a cornucopia of sounds derived from and inspired by an incredible wealth of sources. Impossible to narrow down to a specific genre, «Everything is pared down. Minimal Expectations» finds itself sitting comfortably outside practical convention. It is simply music - sometimes abrasive, often beautiful - yet always fascinating and inspired. ORGAN: unite the past, present and future, as childhood memories blend with road-weary contemplation and universal wonder.

Description/Reviews
Everything from progressive rock to Scandinavian-inspired folk, and from avant-garde to doom metal gets an airing. The textures, tones, emotions and atmospheres can vary greatly, often within individual songs. And yet, the final product manages to remain cohesive and never disjointed. Equally, I find the music to be fresh-sounding, remaining modern and relevant in today’s metal world.

Description/Reviews
They also like to associate themselves with the term pronk, which stands for progressive punk and has been made popular – well, more or less – by British band Cardiacs. Where these pronk pioneers usually had very strict songwriting, Detieti prefer to dabble more in freeform exercises, which can best be heard on the first and last track on the album, which both are about ten minutes long. The opener Cocaintro is not so much an intro but a nine minute long elaboration of different motifs that use all kinds of elements, from Black Sabbath influenced doom riffs to classical music. The overall impression if quite funky, as if the Spin Doctors had been let loose after the intake of unspecified hallucinogens.

Description/Reviews
Things get interesting immediately with the second track “Looks,” a groovy prog-funk track with mixed tempos and thumping bass lines. There is even a moment that bares similarities to a Tony Bank’s Genesis keyboard breakdown. This is a fun track and one any prog fan would appreciate... Things kick into high gear with the 5th song, “Maybe Someday,” the group’s dive into progressive rock. All the elements are here, the killer chops, time signature changes, solo breakdowns, and the explosive fast-paced ending complete with finger tapping. Sitting back listening to this one, you might find yourself doing a double take, wondering ‘what in the world was that?!’ Next track “Remind Me” gives off the suggestion that perhaps we are heading back into jam territory with its acoustic guitar groove and mystical breakdown in the chorus. But before the listener can get too comfortable, the band dive straight into prog metal for perhaps the highlight of the album. This is full-on double bass, guitar chunk shred, and it doesn’t let up for the remaining 5 minutes of the song.

Description/Reviews
After the Floydian/Porcupinish first part of the album, the musicians offer us a large pallette of musical styles. Three melodic songs separate a number of  intense tracks offering alternative rock (do I hear some Simple Minds?), metal prog (...hints of Tool), jazz fusion and even a little bit of blues rock. They do all this while always keeping some prog elements in their music and a mood link between the songs.
