Line-up
Pepe Pierez - vocals, guitars
Gunnar Erxleben - guitars
Thorsten Penz - bass

Description/Reviews
With roots in traditional heavy metal, Ancient Curse aims for power metal with some progressive metal intrigue. Largely, the songs are crafted with strong twin guitar riffage, heavy bass lines, and bold thundering drums wrapped in arrangements which twist and turn with various tempos and time signatures. Eventually, all things then lead to a creative guitar solo, often over a quick pace as within The Shadow and Hypnotize, for example.

Line-up
Samuel Traquina- Lead Vocals, Guitar, misc. instruments.
Paul Evans- Drums, misc. percussion
Meredith Tashkandi- Bass and strings
Alissa Castro-Evans- Keys, Backup Vocals, misc. instruments

Description/Reviews
...the music sits on the softer and more delicate end of prog I think it would be fair to say. Vocalist Samuel Traquina is very easy on the ear and in the more upbeat songs he has a proximity close to Geddy Lee if I were to make a comparison (although not quite such a piercing falsetto that Lee goes to) he is very well supported by Alissa Castro on backing vocals – think Animate by Rush and you’ll find the closest kindred vocal style, particularly on the rockier Tonight. The opening track, Notes On My Pillowcase is a great prog track that takes you on an interesting, diverse journey, there’s no long passages of timing changes or interminable soloing, it’s just a good song that, with repeated listens, draws you in and floats you along. What I do like about Making Maps’ Sapling is that it’s subtle, almost understated, interesting and willing to experiment with sound, instruments and ideas that flow through each song.

Graham Bell: Additional Guitar (1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 10)

Description/Reviews
The first thing to state is that this is a real slow-burner of a listen. Few will be too impressed on a first or even a third listen. The melodies take a while to ease into the sub-conscious. But be patient. The best music generally has these attributes. Once it does sink in, there are some serious earworm tracks here that you will keep coming back to.
Musically I am reminded of two other debut albums, from Dutch band A Liquid Landscape and American one-hit wonders The Addiction Dream. The more quirky moments and certain vocal phrasings are reminiscent of my favourite band from Sheffield, InFictions (the opening of Morning Warning).

Artem Taganov — drums
Victor Krabovich — electric guitar, keys
Nik Koniwzski — violin, keys

Description/Reviews
The band plays instrumental music with many ingredients.  Their music sounds illustrious and whimsical with progressive rock elements bolstered by violin passages and accents weaving their way around the rock rhythms.  They have some neoclassical nods here and there, mostly haunting and somber atmospheres created by the violin, but the music is primarily about energy, drive, and power.  Many passages come across as being akin to math rock in that commanding, complex rush of performance tinged with artistry and beauty.
One thing that sets Aesthesys apart is their use of electronica.  On this album, I daresay that it is more prominent than ever.

Description/Reviews
Blue Sun is the debut album of the prog-band THE IKAN METHOD, and it is a progressive rock album inspired by the big groups of the new-prog 80s and 90s (in particular Marillion and IQ) Then pieces full of melodies, with intertwining of guitars and keyboards supported by a solid rhythmic base, for half sung and for another half composed of instrumental pieces where the instruments are "singing". All the pieces have a melancholy streak and tell, through music and words, of feelings and life experiences, both internal and social, that photograph a dark period of our society, the current one…

Description/Reviews
The following Dnaa ... is a huge surprise by showing the two musicians in a very restrained way. The bass guitar and drums are first joined by a harp chord, and then later by an Asian sounding string instrument. Then, all of a sudden, the music falls into the background, to be replaced by high multi-layered vocals that might remind you of American indie folk bands, or early Seventies folk prog bands, except that the intonation is purely Russian. The bass guitar returns in all its distorted glory to transform this track into some kind of Beach Boys on an enjoyable hellish acid trip, complete with a brass section adding a swinging Sixties atmosphere. So there is so much happening on this song alone, but the duo never loses track of its majestic songwriting.

Description/Reviews
In 2020, Caligula’s Horse look forward to releasing their most focussed and potent artistic statement yet: Rise Radiant, an uncompromising exploration of the human experience dressed in vivid musical colour and virtuosic performances. It is the culmination of the band’s artistic development, concentrating the expressive stylings which have endeared Caligula’s Horse to legions of fans worldwide. But it is also far more. Rise Radiant is the Caligula’s Horse sound pushed to its extremes: at once its most ferocious and its most touching, its most expansive and its most condensed, its most poetic and its most vicious. Rise Radiant is an anthem for the regeneration of self-belief, an exploration of the themes of legacy, and a rallying cry for survival.

Description/Reviews
The impact is evident from the curtain-raising hypnotic drones, tuned percussion and acoustic guitar notes that herald Chart The Way. The incoming chants and tribal rhythms might remind those of us old enough to know better of Jon Anderson’s Olias Of Sunhillow opus.
The journey is a rich one that encompasses the psychedelic and the joyous, the spectral and the gossamer. Soft acoustic picking leads Silent The Rotor that ebbs and flows and confirms the absence of any limitations. Not that there ever have been in a genre where boundaries are for pushing. Hip To The Jag moves beyond the astral to a space where the music cascades into astral territories. Swirling through and around the cosmos in a parcel of ethereal space rock. Might sound a bit flowery but hey!

Description/Reviews
Drawing again from the multiple sources which have always inspired the band (from electronic music and pop to experimentation, jazz, minimalism, contemporary classical etc), Aksak Maboul transcends and reconfigures them with its inimitable style, to create an impressive, rich and unclassifiable piece of work.
Seamlessly weaving electronic and acoustic instrumentation, improvisation and programming, songs, beats, found objects and sound collages, the album works as a labyrinth, full of secret passages and interconnections. Figures clocks in at 75 minutes, thus deliberately shunning the laws of instant gratification and the myth of today’s reduced attention span: the Aksak Maboul aficionados will surely be happy to engage in an immersive session of deep listening (in two halves), in order to enjoy the album’s many layers and details.

Description/Reviews
Yes, this is instrumental music that broadly fits into the post-rock category.
However, while their music may share a lot of the characteristics common to the genre, there is a freshness to Parhelia and they have managed to create their own identity, not an easy task in a crowded scene.
They achieve this by ensuring their music is intricately layered. As they don't have to worry about reproducing the album live, they have freed themselves from having to consider the limitations presented by how a duo (or trio) would portray the essence of this music.

Lör "Edge of Eternity"

2. A Life Once Known (5:08)
3. Ruin (7:26)
4. Relic (5:42)

Line-up
Peter Hraur - Guitars, Orchestrations, Harsh Vocals, Gang Vocals
Tyler Fedeli - Lead Vocals, Gang Vocals
Nick Bonsanto - Bass, Gang Vocals
Matt Bartlett - Keyboards
Greg Bogart - Drums

Description/Reviews
Insofar as their sound has power metal elements, Lör leans more toward European power metal than American heavy power metal, but that doesn’t mean these are soaring, lightweight, major key songs about flying on the wings of an eagle. Although there are some lilting folk metal melodies from time to time, the five compositions on Edge of Eternity are quite dark, bordering on melancholic. ... From unconventional progressive metal song structures to cinematic symphonics to occasional extreme metal vocals, this is an incredibly dynamic album.

Markku Mäkinen - Guitar
Erkki Virta -Drums
Timo Vainio - Keyboards
Marko Välimäki - Guitar
Janne Telen - Bass

Description/Reviews
There’s a jaw-dropping moment about mid way through second song Closely Guarded Distance, where the band ease the listener gently out of the sturm und drang of it’s on-the-surface workaday Euro metal grind and deposits them in what appears to be a Marillion outtake from around 1983’s Script For A Jester’s Tear; It’s an impressive piece of sleight of hand, and, if you’re a fan of Fish and company from way back then you’ll feel a seismic shiver run up and down your spine with the sheer delight and surprise at what you’re witnessing. That the song then rebuilds itself into a crashing finale that modern day Paradise Lost would be proud of reinforces the feeling that Sinisthra can do just about anything they like within the broad church that is prog rock/metal and pull it off.
