Jakob Skøtt (Causa Sui)

Description/Reviews
The opener, ‘The Dura Plane’, gets the album of to a strong start with its slightly off-kilter repeato-rhythms. As you would expect the drums are high in the mix and getting a proper pounding before Skøtt leads us off into a dreamlike mid-section which feels detached and disorientated before hitting the beat again to take it home.

Description/Reviews
The album features the 12-minute title track, long a staple of Quarkspace’s live shows, as well as a hearty dollop of improvisational and electronic instrumental cuts. Ultimately, All These Suns reveals a classic Quarkspace inspired by its psychedelic mix of song craft and improvisation. It’s a powerful album, veering between psychedelic folk and deep space rock excursions sometimes presented in an electronic fashion.

Description/Reviews
The album’s prog and singer songwriter credentials are solidified on “Church Friends” and “Incomplet” both powered by hypnotic guitar phrases and sudden shift of gears reminiscent of King Crimson and The Mars Volta. The first song released of the album “Milan” is a gorgeous ballad demonstrating Giles ability to write sentimental compositions with Kraftwerk like synthesizers. There are songs on this album that pay homage to the 80’s like “Radiate” an ambient, moody and haunting Vangelis like creation and the closing song “Exordium” with its dreamy guitar, keyboards and drum machine effects.

Total Time 36:50

Line-up
Alberto Pietropoli - saxophone, flutes, voice
Enrico Giuliani - bass
Riccardo Lolli - keyboards
Andrea Ventura - drums and percussions

Description/Reviews
The album Whatever Day Suits You Best mixes electronica, prog and jazz into a thick and heady brew of dance-beat inflected, instrumental jazz-fusion.... If you are looking at the line-up, and are thinking: “ah now that looks like an instrumental Van Der Graaf Generator, those perennial favourites of the Italian prog community”, then you would be, as I was, wrong. The sound here is more individualistic and reminds me of the French electronica-meets-jazz of Moksha Samnyasin and also of Sonny Simmons’ 2015 album Nomadic. It is livelier, less dark, though just as substantial.

Description/Reviews
The musical style is a great mix of burning electronic tones with progressive rock. You will hear plenty of “real” instruments, from thrilling guitars to pounding drums.  However, the overall mood of the album is led purely by synth and keys, and so it feels almost like Vangelis or Tangerine Drum decided to go rock out one day.

Description/Reviews
... the first part of opener “Deadend Mind”. A dark part with some Doom and Stoner Rock influences. But the song develops gradually more into an electronic soundscape with references to Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream. The last part with the xylophone and the synths has a strong resemblance to one of the best Steve Hackett songs (“Shadow of the Hierophant”) from his debut album “Voyage Of The Acolyte”.

Description/Reviews
The new album is approximately 50 minutes in length and is a collection of ten exquisite pieces that have so many nuances that’s quite impossible to define its music style: elements of jazz, math rock, electronic and some classical notes are all blended together to create an album that represents a step ahead compared to This World. History of the Future is probably more dynamic but it does have calm, dreamlike moments.
