Description/Reviews
...with Smells Funny the trio are venturing into the more free and open landscapes explored on their previous album, Black Stabat Mater.
Jazz or rock? Stonerswing? Or doomjazz maybe? For every new record by Hedvig Mollestad Trio, critics try to invent an adequate genre name for their spellbinding, uncompromising and visceral music. Classic Rock Magazine came closest: Jazz Sabbath. The band's eclectic mix of influences ranges from Black Sabbath and Jimi Hendrix to John Coltrane and contemporary jazz and metal music. Description/Reviews
The opener, ‘The Dura Plane’, gets the album of to a strong start with its slightly off-kilter repeato-rhythms. As you would expect the drums are high in the mix and getting a proper pounding before Skøtt leads us off into a dreamlike mid-section which feels detached and disorientated before hitting the beat again to take it home.

Description/Reviews
Poldur's Gate Project is an experiment: rock/metal songs whose music and voices are synthesized via software... played and sung artificially.
The album talks about aspects of the human nature by considering our evolution in the course of time, especially in relation to our ability to rationalize and consequentially to be aware of our existence. Though we keep on being instinctive animals, these characteristics define some unique human behaviors, such as daydreaming, hoping, lying, criticizing, and so forth.

Description/Reviews
Once again the Uppsala multi-instrumentalists combine elements of trogged-out psychedelic rock with a deadly serious Arctic minimalism and weeping modal improvisations that owe more to the outer limits of jazz and burnt-out free music from Japan. It’s connoisseur’s space music, grown-up and grievously honed; outwardly inclined towards the epic but studded with details that reward attention and introspection.

There’s always been a strong undercurrent of sadness animating Bremen’s work, and that existential burden is present and correct on Enter Silence, culminating in the all-out cosmic anguish of ‘Palladium’. Even ‘The Middle Section’, whose ragged chords are nothing if not the sound of optimism and defiance, sounds like it’s navigating some kind of unsayable trauma. But this band has always allowed plenty of room for bonehead slash-and-burn as well: see here especially the Stoogeian/39 Clocks-ish rock’n’roll of ‘Aimless Cruising’ and the pulpy quasi-cinematic tension of ‘Sinister’, or the brilliant ‘Too Cold For Your Eyes’, a blast of voidal motorik that sounds like a cranked-up Clean.

Country: China
Genre(s): Instrumental Post Rock, Progressive Rock
Format: digital
Release date: November 23, 2018
Tracklist
1.  Birds Contending | 争鸣 (43:27)

Line-up
Hoyliang: Electric Guqin, Xiao (Chinese Flute)
Littledream: Guitar
Roy: Bass
Seasean: Drums, Celesta

Description/Reviews
Across the entire record, Zhaoze constantly bounces back and forth between progressive and post-rock that are done to gorgeous effect. Then layer in a true multitude of traditional Chinese instruments on top of all that, which are performed beautifully as well, and “Birds Contending” is made so much more detailed as the entirety of the record has a completely different and unique feel as we’re guided through the very forest that this record was actually recorded in.

Bernt Sørensen - Guitars
Anders Kobro - Drums
   With
Kåre Sletteberg - Lead Guitar (2), Acoustic Guitar

Description/Reviews
Continuing to refine and perfect their sound while ever expanding it in new directions, “Cease the Day” is a powerful and kaleidoscopic effort. A thunderous undercurrent of melodic riffing drives these songs forward, elements of doom, death, and progressive metal all coming together to form a cohesive whole.

Chilling ambience, psychedelia, avant-garde, and deep soaring vocals ebb and flow to craft a unique sound that truly must be heard to be believed, all before crushing the listener with the band’s most extreme moments since their debut “Heart of the Ages”.

The album features the 12-minute title track, long a staple of Quarkspace’s live shows, as well as a hearty dollop of improvisational and electronic instrumental cuts. Ultimately, All These Suns reveals a classic Quarkspace inspired by its psychedelic mix of song craft and improvisation. It’s a powerful album, veering between psychedelic folk and deep space rock excursions sometimes presented in an electronic fashion.

Description/Reviews
‘Proxy’ is a riot of juxtaposing styles, presented in a really direct manner and despite being firmly rooted in the stylistic traits of the Progressive Rock Genre takes some unexpected turnoffs and a major swerve. The albums kicks off with a trademark Tangent prog fantasia based around growling Hammonds, shrieking Synths, whirling guitars and sharp percussive bass - influences of ELP, Egg, Hatfield & the North, Caravan and Camel proudly worn on their sleeves. This 16-minute title track eventually becomes a protest song about the continuing wars that share their name with the song.
But this album features no overall concept. The second track is a sun-drenched Mediterranean fusion instrumental, more Chick Corea than Che Guevara. And the third track is referred to by the band as an attempt to find the missing link between Porcupine Tree and Jamiroquai. By the time we reach the centrepiece epic track ‘The Adulthood Lie’, the rulebook has been left behind and the band are trying to fix the car with whatever is at hand.

Description/Reviews
While intended to indicate a will to explore the atypical and elaborate the old into something new, the term “progressive” can be off-putting. Too often does a band fall prey to its own ambition of pursuing every flight of fancy and pushing things further, which can quickly turn a forward-thinking album into a confusing grab-bag of technically proficient tangents awkwardly sewn together. Cosmonaut is not that. Here is an album where progressive elements are subtly used to colour already solid, groovy song foundations, which could easily stand by themselves.

Description/Reviews
The term progressive metal can bring to mind some cringe-worthy images, among them Berklee dropouts making long sprawling songs with obtuse riffs written with one thing in mind — “How will this sound if I solo over it?“ What sets Sigh apart from such bands, aside from their black metal past, is that their sound actually progresses. It is not stagnant wanking. You know only to expect organized chaos when you go into one of their albums. So I should have not been surprised by the opening track of Heir To Despair (“Aletheia”) sounding like a space-age take on Jethro Tull as a metal band; it makes perfect sense.
