Description/Reviews:
‘Chaos Within A Construct’ and its respective interlude ‘Double Standards’ more or less establishes this from the record’s offset, its thunderous post rock brimming with confidence as it flows to and from the jazz inclined math rock sequences that bind the track. However, it’s the proceeding ‘Forever The Optimist’ that serves as the record’s first big, standout moment. Towering and beautifully composed, the track’s optimistic metropolitan post rock harkens And So I Watch You From Afar’s sense of imagination and amazement, something that becomes a defining sensibility that only grows across V’s runtime.

In the new album, Kshettra moves away from familiar dark sound worlds. Although progressive and post-rock still form a strong foundation in many numbers, the band has taken a clear course towards compositions with warm harmonies, the music has been enriched with bright inclusions of electronics and nu-jazz.

Pershagen "Hilma"

Country: Sweden
Genre(s): Instrumental Psychedelic, Post Rock
Label: Lövely Records
Format: vinyl, digital
Release date: April 29, 2022
Tracklist
1 Klangskog
2 Hilma
3 Långt bort nära
4 Alla minns den sista gången
5 Karelia
6 Ofog i djävulens sällskap
7 Ekoparken
8 Solen är en trumma
9 Archangelsk.mp3

Line-up
Jimmie Nilsson - Guitar
Theo Stocks - Pedal Steel, Guitar
Andreas Sahlin - Bass
Johan Kalla - Drums

Description/Reviews:
The Swedish quartet delve deeper into their very own niche of dreamy and cinematic instrumental music on the new album. Throughout ‘Hilma’, psychedelic rock intertwines with post-rock, and Scandinavian gloominess melts into colorful moments of bliss.
Pershagen returns with a set of 9 new cuts. Constantly moving between darkness and light, ‘Hilma’ throws the listener on a journey of both improvised jams as well as elegantly arranged compositions. Elements of Nordic folk music meet fuzzy, overdriven grinding, experimental psych rock, and guitar driven indie on the new album. Decorated with the colorful sounds of guitar, pedal steel and organ, ‘Hilma’ captivates throughout the 40 minutes of running time, constantly introducing new soundscapes and musical components.

Ørjan Haland - Drums
Øystein Braut - Guitar, Organ, Mellotron
   With
Sigbjørn Apeland - Harmonium, Fender Rhodes
Ståle Liavik Solberg - Percussion

Description/Reviews:
The band describe themselves as a spaced out, instrumental loungerock outfit, with added vibes of folk music, jazzy surf, psychedelia, free improvised chill-out, jangly post-rock and travelling bass. Not much for us to add here, apart from possibly a pinch of krautrock. “Tellus” is the quartet’s fourth album, and their debut on Rune Grammofon. Being something of an allstar team from the fertile psychedelic spacedrone scene in Haugesund on the westcoast of Norway, the members also pay their dues in bands like Electric Eye, Lumen Drones (ECM), Undergrünnen and The Low Frequency in Stereo. “Tellus” is a powerful and spicy brew rich on captivating hooks, smart details and a hypnotic drive. Their finest effort so far!

Description/Reviews:
This is an album full of symphonic delights, a total experience of the audio senses and, without doubt, an album packed to the brim with beautifully layered, well-constructed music. Every aspect of this wonderful album has been pieced together with ultimate skill and attention to detail. A consummate journey through multitudes of varying soundscapes and audio atmospheres. Even on first play, it is remarkable how every instrument within the line-up stands out in such a well-defined manner and the music graced with its own individuality. Every successive play, therefore, reveals more and more lashings of instrumental wonderment. Energetic yet sensitive drumming, exquisite and tuneful bass lines. And then at times, it is difficult to differentiate between the fascinating shared lead guitar and keyboard arrangements, the use of pedals and other treatments providing a resultant blanket of different sounds all merging all together so seamlessly. But of course spasms of well-considered heavy riffing versus more subtle guitar proliferations, a Juxtaposition of well-ordered beautifully coordinated sounds.

Description/Reviews:
All in all, The Shape of Everything is an album that offers tranquility within its confined space and one that elicits a sense of nirvana you don’t get from most albums. It’s difficult to categorize this album as metal, given the lack of heavy, driven instrumentation and harsh vocals one is more familiar with, but then again, shoegaze is metal-adjacent and this album has beauty in spades.

Ricky Thom – electric guitars, kalimba, percussion
Ronan Geraghty – piano, keyboards, drums, bass, synths, glockenspiel, percussion, vox, FX

Description/Reviews:
The end of “Goldolphin” is nicely rounded, as quiet piano work takes us back to the spring day. By contrast “Orchid” starts as if we’re in a sound laboratory or an experimental music studio. From the grounded “Godolphin”, there’s a lofty air with hints of magic, melancholy and the East. A distinctively post-rock guitar line combines with the drum beat to bring calm and order back into our lives. At this point I could see where the comparisons with Yes and King Crimson might have come from. Let me add Mike Oldfield to that list. clayhands guide us through a world of dreams, a pleasant one I must say. “Orchid” is a super warm track, giving justification to the band’s self-description as a “human band”.

Spaceslug (Jan Rutka / Kamil Ziółkowski): Vocals (8)
Federico Dávila Kurbán: Cello (4, 8), Piano (8)

Description/Reviews:
With a defined style, IAH invites us to explore instrumental environments in which psychedelia, post-rock, stoner and post-metal coexist in perfect harmony. Without fanfare, and knowing when to put the intensity, they manage to create songs full of beauty with which to transmit different states of mind to the listener. Long songs in which they express their good work and that are built from the calm, but that contain different oscillations that make them anything, less monotonous. With nods to the characteristic ambient sound of bands like Yawning Man, they manage to combine progressive elements with the quieter echoes of desert rock. A sensory dimension in which its atmospheres trap the listener, providing a reflective environment of great beauty. This is not an album to party, but, on the contrary, it is the ideal soundtrack to find yourself, in a warm, and very introspective environment. An album that may seem somewhat linear at first impression, but which, on the contrary, has many nuances embedded in each of its songs, something that IAH does with the subtlety of a veteran band. Description/Reviews:
The first track drags me right into the album. It comes thundering in, really. Post-metal in true Toundra feel. There are more sections like that such as the last section of the last track, but The Run is I think the best example. I cannot stop smiling because of how good that song sounds to me and makes me feel, hitting all the right buttons for my need for post-metal heaviness with progressive structures.

Description/Reviews:
Continuing the subtle but profound creative progression in the MONO canon that began with Nowhere Now Here (2019), Pilgrimage of the Soul is the most dynamic MONO album to date (and that’s saying a lot). But where MONO’s foundation was built on the well-established interplay of whisper quiet and devastatingly loud, Pilgrimage of the Soul crafts its magic with mesmerizing new electronic instrumentation and textures, and – perhaps most notably – faster tempos that are clearly influenced by disco and techno. It all galvanizes as the most unexpected MONO album to date – replete with surprises and as awash in splendor as anything this band has ever done.

The structure of just about all of their songs comes with an obvious similarity to post-rock, in that they develop from a careful and gentle starting point and gradually build towards more dramatic eruptions, and in this case will repeat this line of development once or twice in the songs, usually with a different focus and different sounds, motifs or arrangements used for the repeated development cycle. ... The secondary element brought in from the progressive rock universe here are gentler, reverberating instrument details as well as some fuzzier ones that most people generally will sort under the psychedelic tag. ...A final detail of note is that some of the songs here will feature harder, more metal oriented points in the final stages of the development cycle, which adds a touch of post-metal to the proceedings.

Description/Reviews:
The album as such features a few different types of songs, with careful, dreamlike dark atmospheric creations and a melancholic, dark and atmospheric variety of metal making up part of this production. The rest of this album is devoted to material with more of a post metal touch to it, combining the earlier features with the ebb, flow and textured displays of post-rock explored in more of a post-metal oriented context, building from a delicate starting point and concluding in a massive, majestic and borderline overpowering manner. An album to seek out by those who know and love post-rock and post-metal explored with an atmospheric laden swagger. (Olav Martin Bjørnsen at progressor.net's facebook)
