Garcia Peoples have been playing with PG Six for a while, and with Nightcap at Wits’ End, this thinking man’s jam band successfully integrates the keyboard player’s lilting, British-folk-influenced proclivities into their monumental grooves. The band’s fifth full-length splices the kind of serpentine folk-blues licks you might expect from Richard Thompson into their fiery onslaughts, especially on cuts like “Altered Place” and “Painting a Vision that Carries.”

 Wax Machine are an ever evolving, ever changing cosmic force – and this album proves that they have their feet in the door of many eclectic avenues; the fusion of tropicalia, krautrock and ‘spiritual jazz’ is apparent through every song. Lau Ro’s guitar sometimes sounds like it’s wandering off into a mossy palace of psychedelic wonder, but Isobel Jones and her delicate yet sumptuous flute dances through each track, bringing us back to a strange reality with the help of Toma’s earthy yet fluid drum grooves.

Cuts fall at various places along the psych-folk continuum, with “Discordant Angels” hive-mind vocals lifting folk-traditional picking into a higher realm; it sounds a bit like Pentangle’s jazz-folk hybrid, a lot more like Feathers’ dreamiest cuts. “Water Bearing One” tends more towards trap-door-through-reality psych a la Bardo Pond. It is slow and hazed out, the clarity of piano runs dropping into the mix like bright coins submerged in cough syrup.

“Hiisi” is built from four long and winding compositions, which take their cues from folk, jazz, progressive rock, Krautrock and free improv. Opening with a lovely, lilting folk ballad, by the second song, ‘Sarkofagi’, we find Kiki Pau stretching far out into pastoral prog and serpentine space rock. The title track, presented on this LP in two parts, slow-builds into full-on polyrhythmic groovy motorik bliss, fleshed-out unhurriedly yet intensely over the two sides of vinyl. This all makes way for the final (and longest) track, ‘Seeds’, which pretty much encompasses it all; with jazzy melodies, spastic fuzzy jamming and bucolic birdsong. And then finally...leaving you back to your own breath (perhaps the true album closer) with actively-attuned awareness. No need to rush back to the stresses of the world outside the Hiisi. Bask awhile.

Immediate kudos to Stockholm-based psychedelic progressive explorers Our Solar System – aka Vårt Solsystem – for opening their third full-length for Beyond Beyond is Beyond, the five-track/41-minute Origins, with the side-consuming 21-minute “Vulkanen.” One could hardly ask for more effective immersion in the band’s world of patiently unfurled, languid psychedelia, and with the accompaniment of “Babalon Rising,” the jazz-prog tracklist centerpiece “En Bit Av Det Tredje Klotet,” the birdsong-laced “Naturligt Samspel” and the semi-freaked-out melodic wash of “Monte Verita” on side B, a full, rich, and mind-expanding cosmos is engaged, free of restriction even as it remains thoroughly lysergic, and adherent to no structural will so much as the will to adventure into the unknown, to find out where one progression leads. As regards the long- and short-form material on Origins, it leads far, far out, and if you don’t come out the other side wanting to own everything the band has ever released, you’re decidedly in the wrong. There would seem to be something playful, and possibly deceptive, about the title of Stockholm prog psychedelic outfit Our Solar System’s second album, In Time. It’s a phrase that, whether in a musical or even an appropriately astrological sense, indicates confines and regular rotations, even the absence of the abnormal. Yet “abnormal” could be the axis around which all planets in the Our Solar System galaxy revolve. For an album that so effortlessly delivers trance states in sound, the effect of In Time on the listener is likely to be one of orbiting far beyond those confines and regular rotations, toward a delirious detachment from the ticking trap of time.
In Time is essentially the work of thirty hands, creating two side-length tracks and forty-four minutes of sonic energy that serves as a vehicle to reach peak experience, alternately arriving and departing from control and abandon. Our Solar System seem interested in building bridges between worlds, and not just the already quite connected worlds of jazz, progressive rock and psychedelia – labels that represent the previously mentioned confines and regular rotations to which In Time pays little heed.
B-side “At the Edge of Time" is the album’s cosmic co-conspirator, slightly longer, slightly odder, and slightly more seductive than the A-side "In the Beginning of Time", in part given the mantra-like vocals that provide calm contrast to the musical meteor shower that’s crashing around them. This is the sound of Our Solar System at their astrological apex – exploratory, transcendent and joyous.
Within the confines of time, it’s appropriate to refer to In Time as an interstellar jazz-rock album, and an extraordinary one at that. Despite it’s title, you may come to believe that the true home of “In Time” is a place outside time’s confines, floating in space, surrounded by infinite stars and sounds, projecting an indefinable sound that’s boundless and beautiful.( revoltoftheapes.com)

Yet with the release of “Arena Negra” – the band’s first release for Beyond Beyond Is Beyond Records – there are signs that the mystery has been solved. Put another way, there may have never been a mystery to solve in the first place. As the forty-two minute journey unfolds, it becomes abundantly clear that The Myrrors are simply one of the most compelling bands on the planet at the moment, whether their records are arriving three times a year, or only every three years.
The Myrrors sound is one of urgency, but urgency not beholden to velocity. From the twelve-minute “Arena Negra” title track that opens the album (by slowly slithering out of the ground and into the air), to the twenty-minute inhumanly heavy album closer, “The Forward Path,” it’s immediately apparent that the band has captured completely the sound of shackles being shed. “Arena Negra” comes on strong, as clearly, evenly and undeniably as the very light that enters your eyes, fueled by a heroic dose of Bardo Pond-esque levels of elevation and amplification.

Ostensibly a psych record, “Forest of Lost Children” weighs heavily to the progressive side which makes the attention, and the record, ultimately refreshing. As good as records are from outfits endlessly influenced by overdone usual suspects, it’s energizing that Kikagaku Moyo have generated such fervor with an album that leans heavily to worldly and folky prog. That said, they still light it up when they want to as on the rhythmic gallop of “Hem,” but there’s an airiness and nimbleness running through the heat as much as the mellower places that makes it a breath of fresh air. “Smoke and Mirrors” is equally laid back, smokey and fiery. So is “Street of Calcutta” in a whole other way that shows their wide influences as much as it adds even more dynamics to the record. Rather than showcasing their extremes using the trite and true method of loud/soft/loud/soft, Kikagaku Moyo bleed it all across, on single cuts or in the sequencing of the tracks.

The album begins with “Fine Flow,” a rather traditional psych-rock jam that originated in the band’s 2012 EP of the same name. Wavering, watery distorted guitars skitter frantically over easy percussion, accompanied by dissonant, squawking horns. It’s full of energy, the kind of jam worthy of any summer festival, but it also has a somewhat dark edge, exposing underlying tension. Much of Face the Sun sits on this precipice of dark and light, balancing on the brink. “Medicine,” with its slinking bass and eerie vocals, says it most clearly: “[If you] wanna be free / You have to destroy / Gonna have to tear down all the walls / We’ll laugh and we’ll sing and we’ll dance upon the ruins of it all.” Several songs refer to addiction and self-destructive tendencies, like “Temptation” and “The Crave,” where Blakeslee sings, “Crying again / What’s the matter now? / Trying to quit but I don’t know how,” above a slinky, strutting riff and heavy effects.
Perhaps the strongest moment on Face the Sun is its closing track, the instrumental “Night Cat.” Eerie effects and high vocals float over a slinking beat, light guitar, and a pulsing, dark bass. Without Blakeslee’s sometimes grating vocals, you can focus more on the artful interweaving of the guitar and bass lines, the anxious, evocative tones moving in ascending melodies. At times, it almost sounds like an Explosions in the Sky track, capturing a triumphant, moving sound before submitting again to a more ominous feeling. (mxdwn.com)
