Musically, Cyclopean Walls blend in their sound the European with the US progressive metal with the addition of classical elements and hauntingly beautiful melodies, creating a dark atmosphere that offers cinematic vibes. In the course of the record, they draw inspiration from heavier genres to form an ominous atmosphere fitting to the theme. The doom metal inspired riffing in the songs “The Garden” and “The Doom that Came to Sarnath” are such examples.

Instrumental opener “Alpha” could be easily be part of a film soundtrack. There is some Symphonic Prog excellence spread in here. Deep and epic melodies and an electrified atmosphere. The vibes of bands like ECHOLYN and THE ENID are combined under a very special classical approaching. During its crescendo parts the song will even bring into the foreground this very special SHADOW GALLERY touch...

“Land Of Decay” is one of the darkest and most esoteric compositions on the record. Topalide’s melancholic vocal melodies are combined with Bandi’s classically oriented and nostalgic keyboard themes. The overall orchestration and arrangement of this one brought into my mind some newer Prog Metal bands of our times like HAKEN -however the song was composed back on 2005-2006-.

Phoenix Rising offers a good blend of traditional heavy and power metal with some obvious prog nuances. Fortress Under Siege is also strong on melody and putting some solid rock groove into many songs. Notably it underlies the chorus or vocal arrangement as within the Final Attempt or the title cut. Mostly, being founded by two guitarists, most of the arrangements are large on riffs and big solos. Eagles Fly Forever, a true heavy metal number, is a good example of song built almost entirely on these two characteristics.

False Coda’s trademarks are heavy, harmonically inventive chords, knockout jazz fusion-inspired guitar lines, inventive rhythms and, in what maybe sets this band apart from other progressive style bands, some pretty goddamn great melodic hooks. CLOSER TO THE EDGE’s got its own musical identity and is the result of the progressive evolution that Dream Theater Psychotic Waltz and Fates Warning have been undertaken since over two decades and ever after.
Let’s take a closer look at the album’s content and context. The album is very well thought out – with just the right mixture of heaviness and lightness. Clean vocals and heavy guitar riffs and melodic tunes everywhere. The middle of the album has a large portion of powerful “near power metal” touches. There are also quiet reflective moments throughout the entire album that might be kind of risky in less skilled hands but to me are the perfect offset to the heavier and more intense parts. I have to say that I do like very much the Deep Purple-laden parts in keyboards “Room of Panic” and the great “Paranoid’s” riff in “Blood On Eyes”.
