Jakob Skøtt (Causa Sui)

Description/Reviews
The opener, ‘The Dura Plane’, gets the album of to a strong start with its slightly off-kilter repeato-rhythms. As you would expect the drums are high in the mix and getting a proper pounding before Skøtt leads us off into a dreamlike mid-section which feels detached and disorientated before hitting the beat again to take it home.

Line-up
Rasmus "Cleve" Christensen - bass
Frederik Denning - drums
Emil Thorenfeldt - guitar
Kasper Stougaard Andersen - guitar

Description/Reviews
Upheaval is both Mythic Sunship’s heaviest and most nuanced record yet. The double guitar attack crackles and shakes the earth, while the rhythm section gives the guys a solid foundation to do as much damage as possible. There’s also a lot of contemplative moments here strewn throughout the skull-rattling guitar and bone-crunching bass. It’s an all-encompassing sonic shakedown.

Causa Sui "Vibraciones Doradas"

Format: CD, digital, vinyl
Release date: November 17, 2017
Tracklist
1. The Drop (7:12)
2. El Fuego (11:24)
3. Viborera (2:07)
4. Seven Hills (7:24)
5. Vibraciones Doradas (9:05)

Total Time 37:12

Line-up
Jakob Skøtt - drums
Jonas Munk - guitar
Rasmus Rasmussen - keyboards
Jess Kahr - bass

Description/Reviews
... Causa Sui continue to work on their own level when it comes to style, able to shift between the feet-on-the-ground drumming that gives opener “The Drop” its churning beginning and the spacious guitar and keys of “El Fuego” that seem to float that 11-minute second song and side A finisher toward its graceful midsection build. Some of the progressive sensibilities of arrangement cast into Return to Sky have been dialed back — not all, but some — and the resulting live feel even in synth-laden centerpiece drone interlude “Viborera” as it long-fades into the straight-ahead desert riff at the outset of “Seven Hills” ahead of the nine-minute nodder-closer title-cut is flowing and gorgeous in kind.

Mythic Sunship "Land Between Rivers"

Genre(s): Instrumental Psychedelic, Space Rock
LabelEl Paraiso Records (EPR038)
Format: CD, vinyl, digital
Release date: April 28, 2017
Tracklist
1. Nishapur (15:30)
2. High Tide (13:15)
3. Silt (6:19)

Total Time 35:04

Line-up
Rasmus Cleve Christensen - bass
Frederik Denning - drums
Emil Thorenfeldt - guitar
Kasper Stougaard Andersen - guitar

Description/Reviews
An exploratory vibe feels genuine — that is, when Mythic Sunship dig into a jam like that on “Nishapur,” the really dig into it — and with a complementary thickness of low end to act as a grounding force, guitars roam freely in airy post-rock howls and sunburnt krautrock progressivism. They’re not reinventing the wheel as regards heavy psychedelic transcendence, but Mythic Sunship are clearly doing the work of developing a sonic persona through these jams, and the bouts of cacophony that emerge in the meantime like that nine minutes into the opener or at the swirling apex of “High Tide” excite with the dynamic taking shape.

Nate Burns - Guitars
Thomas Dibenedetto - Guitars
Matt Weiss - Bass

Description/Reviews
Informed by sun kissed psychedelia and inspired by the more Jazz Fusion influenced Prog Rock bands of the 1970s, Monarch are a throwback to the heady days of the post-psychedelic era where the blurring of boundaries was common and cornucopia of musical styles were up for grabs. Hailing from the fertile Southern California Psych scene, Monarch connect the dots between classic California rock, sweeping Prog Rock soundscapes, languid pastoral Psychedelic jams, explosive Jazz Rock fusion and the vivid, expansiveness of early 1990s British Shoegaze.

Total time 42:20

Line-up
Jakob Skøtt (Causa Sui) - Drums, Synthesizer

Description/Reviews
...All The Colours Of The Dust is the third instalment of his “drums verses synthesizers” sonic expeditions. An unusual brand of one-man improv jam, Skøtt lays down his drums tracks first and then goes back and pastes layers of crazy synth noises over the top. The result? Pretty distinctive, I’d say; part jazz fusion, part space rock, part ambient, part drone, part krautrock and all Skøtt.

Causa Sui’s music is now more earthy and heavy than ever before, but it’s ability to absorb everything from shoegaze and vintage Italian film music to spiritual jazz, afrobeat and minimalism into its fabric has matured as well. Never before has Causa Sui sounded as deep and mesmerizing as on this set.

Tracklist
1. Solo 1 (6:49)
2. Solo 2 (6:42)
3. Solo 3 (6:49)
4. Solo 4 (7:18)
5. Solo 5 (7:23)

Total Time 47:04

Line-up
Nicklas Sørensen (Papir) - Guitars, Synthesizer
   With
Jonas Munk (Causa Sui) - Additional Synthesizer & Electronics (1, 3-6)
Christian Becher Clausen (Papir) - Bass
Christoffer Brøchmann Christensen (Papir) - Drums, Percussion

Description/Reviews
The record features 6 track, 3 per side and starts off with Solo1 and it features some nice melodic guitar over a steady Christian/Christoffer groove. Jonas layers in some organ as well filling in the bottom of the sound but still allowing the guitar parts to lead.  Nice track with some repeated themes. In the end it builds up a lot like a Papir track but with out the intense lead guitar. The spacey keyboard part sort of increases instead for a real dreamy feel. Solo 2 is a quite slow piece with drums and bass and a slow gliding guitar line. This is a very peaceful piece of music. Solo3 starts with a really cool looped guitar and then Nicklas comes in with another melodic line over the top. You can just hear the high hat (I think) but no other drums yet. Eventually a bass line joins the track and then a repetitive keyboard line. The track grows as a new looped guitar is started but the keyboards grow to dominate this track with Nicklas almost disappearing for a while.  There are no real drums per se. Lots of looped Krauty stuff.

  1. Via De Mi Rancho - 8:11

  3. On Petersen's Corner - 6:00
  4. Memories of Pubby - 11:21

David Hurley: Congas & Percussion
Michael Hams: Drums & Percussion
Patrick Shiroishi: Alto & Soprano Saxophone
Paul Marrone: Drums, Percussion, Guitar
Trevor Mast: Bass

Description/Reviews
Along with members from Radio Moscow, Corima and Psicomagia, Brian has cooked up two vinyl sides of seriously vital jazz-rock, taking up where Miles Davis, Tony Williams and Donald Byrd left off in the seventies. This music is a far cry from the self-absorbed European free-jazz or academic noodling one is likely to meet at any given jazz festival - no, this music is earthy, like, say, Hendrix at Woodstock, or Miles’ Live Evil - a pinnacle challenge of the past that has never met any really satisfying response from contemporary music.

There’s that unique sense of percussive drift that characterized Can’s records in the first half of the seventies - somehow extravagant, yet also subtle at the same time. The warmth of Brian’s sun-dried Rhodes and cosmic Moog-lines intertwine with Patrick Shiroishi’s Coltrane-inspired soprano arabesques. Trevor Mast’s thick bass lines and a multitude of tribalistic percussion keep it together along with a naturalistic crisp-sounding recording. It all adds up to a soulful tour de force of everything that’s great about the current San Diego scene. To be played loudly.

Jonas Munk "Absorb / Fabric / Cascade"

Country: Denmark
Genre(s)Electronica, Krautrock, Ambient
LabelEl Paraiso Records
Formatvinyl
Release dateMarch 2, 2015
Tracklist
  1. Absorb - 15:18
  2. Fabric - 10:05
  3. Cascade - 12:51
Line-up
Jonas Munk (Causa Sui) - everything

Description/Reviews
Listening you definitely get some Terry Riley influence, as well as Popol Vuh and earlier, sparser Tangerine Dream. “Absorb” feels like a blippy radar. Arpeggiated synth blips and bleeps carry you along as what feels like a blanket of analog warmth comes over you. There’s a percussive pulse that makes itself known, anchoring the song and giving it a center. You really do get the feeling of the universe forming in front of your eyes as you listen to this track. “Fabric”, on the other hand, feels very much “of the earth”. It leans heavily on organ, which in turn makes one reminiscent of Terry Riley’s highly underrated “Poppy Nogood and the Phantom Band”. Munk certainly isn’t aping Riley here. He’s merely using Riley’s musical blueprint as a starting point and building his own trippy structure here. “Cascade” is quiet, reflective, and gives one the feeling of plunging into a mellow darkness. Finding the end of all existence and allowing the ship to fall over the ledge into nothingness.

3. Incipiency Suite - 26:34

Line-up
Jonas Munk - guitar, keyboards, electronics
Jess Kahr - bass
Jakob Skøtt - drums, percussion
    With
Ron Schneiderman

Description/Reviews
Following last years determined studio double LP, Euporie Tide, Causa Sui returns to improv with a third round of mindbending jams feat. Ron Schneiderman!
The savage, kaleidoscopic improvisations of the quintet's previous two volumes instantly gained reverence among fans of free flowing krautrock and detuned stoner rock, and this brand new addition, recorded in the late summer of 2013, fullfills the group's potential entirely. The krautrock grooves, the low-end heavyness and the sprawling furor is still very much present - but this set is also permeated by a rare free jazz-sensibility, at times recalling American masters of improvisation such as John Coltrane and Don Cherry in spirit.
Ferociously experimental, yet absolutely welcoming and corporal. One eye looking back to the golden age of improvised music, the other looking straight ahead, into the future. ”Incipiency Suite”, which takes up the entire B-side of this record, stands as the high pinnacle of what this group is capable of with the inclusion of Ron Schneiderman: an afternoon of spontaniously recorded parts, cut-and-pasted into an abundant whole by studio wiz Jonas Munk, creating a unique interplay between in-the-moment improvisation and creative studio editing.

Description/Reviews
Upon the initial listening session with El Paraiso Records latest band signing Psicomagia and their self titled debut album, there is no question this band has officially been passed the progressive rock torch.  Landing in the era of 1968-1970 when Soft Machine, Magma, The Miles Davis Group, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, Tony Williams Lifetime and many other were innovating the foundational basis to the 70′s rich fusion movements, Psicomagia bleeds with heart wrenching layers of amplified progressive psychedelia.

10. Eternal Flow - 9:26

Line-up
Jonas Munk - guitar, keyboards, electronics
Jess Kahr - bass
Jakob Skøtt - drums, percussion

Description/Reviews
Clocking in at approximately 10 minutes, “Homage” is a characteristic Causa Sui track in the sense that it blends the massive, yet pristine, soundscapes of their take on psych, with an instrumental take on the stoner-rock genre that is topped off with tons of vibrato on organs and guitars. As Causa Sui groove their way through these ten minutes, the variety in riffs, melody lines and the sheer changes in dynamics are more than enough to keep even the most demanding listener entertained – I’d dare say that even goes for listeners that aren’t too keen on instrumental music.
As we approach “Echo Springs” the stoner edge seems to have been tossed aside, if only for a brief moment, to create a smooth jazz-rock inspired piece that, once again, ploys various ‘bubbling’ vibrato sounds into the soundscape. I have come to grow quite fond of the drum work on this track, as it has that kind of smooth and jazzy approach to it while never really turning showy or dominating. The instrumentation, as well as the general mix, seems perfectly balanced and reassures me that whether you’re looking for some awesome instrumental rock pieces or a psychedelic backdrop to chill out to, Causa Sui is probably one of the best bets around on the contemporary psych-scene.
