Description/Reviews
It is thanks to the band’s approach of always trying to find its own uniqueness that on A Trick of Light Simeon Soul Charger sound more versatile than ever. In terms of the songwriting process the band explored a new approach this time, by working as a collective at all times. The record beautifully combines ingredients such as psychedelic, folk, blues, progressive, glam and stoner rock with a lot of enthusiasm, musical virtuosity as well as a lyrical concept that seduces the listener to become a part of the fascinating Simeon Soul Charger-shadow play, where nothing is as it seems
The final product displays songs that are clearly made up by the raw influences of four individual personalities, artfully crafted into ten massive pieces of rock n’ roll by these virtuoso musicians. During the wild ride that is A Trick of Light the listener is engulfed by a hypnotic atmosphere composed of groovy smoothness, cutting edge energy and a lingering layer of elegant sexiness. The album’s first single, Heavy, offers a brilliant glimpse into the experience that this explosive mixture establishes. Creativity is vast, the sound is uncompromising – the symbiosis is complete.
A Trick of Light is another gigantic step ahead in the evolution of this band. Ever since the early days, Simeon Soul Charger have received particular acclaim for their impressive live shows, which is a two-edged sword as the members of the band say: “Oftentimes people would say: the record is great, but you HAVE to see them live! We wanted to adjust that.” For the first time ever Simeon Soul Charger have now managed to transfer both the electrifying energy as well as the fascinating excitement of their live shows from the stage to the studio. To do so, the band proved its courage during the recording sessions, as they invited fans and friends to the studio and simply recorded all the songs live. Aiming to show the world what Simeon Soul Charger is capable of, the band has thus managed to endow A Trick of Light with a degree of sophistication in dynamics, courage, creativity, craziness and artistic precision that has never been seen before.
Simeon Soul Charger have not only filled the audiences of fourteen countries on various continents with enthusiasm, but have also found the courage along the way to not make musical compromises – while still aiming to go all the way. A Trick of Light is the product of the combined gutsiness of four talented musicians who dared to declare: if it’s real, it’s good. The band likes to put it this way: “On this album we wanted to be Simeon Soul Charger – louder and clearer than ever before.” One feels the urge to tell them: mission accomplished!

The title Inwards depicts not only the overall expression of the music and the process leading to its creation, but also an underlying theme in the lyrics. A common theme wasn’t as much intentional as it was a result of shared feelings and experiences. The album’s narrative tells a story of the protagonist struggling with his visions and seeking ways to mend his shattered thoughts to ultimately find safety. The story encompasses several differing perspectives.

Line-up
Claire Briant: Vocals
Francesco Monaci: Guitar
Christian Luconi: Bass
Valerio Dalla Ragione: Keyboards
Matteo Bidini: Drums

Description/Reviews
“Out of the loop” is desire for freedom, “City” sees it turned into pain, “Forty” is temptation, “Magdalene” is that sweetness which dies in “Keep me by the stars”, failure of the human feeling. “Uneasy” is trust, “Toccata” does not speak with words, “Fear” is passion and terror, “Phariseum” is rage and hypocrisy.
“Human Divine” is the keystone of the disc, it supports and concludes it. It’ s the clear discovery of the need for God, passing through the human loneliness. The other songs live in this suite, and are turned into a medley composed of 72 measures, the number of the names of God in the cabbalistic tradition, which -overcomes- nature, in order to show that only in what is sublime, in Him, we can find a meaning for the human experience.

Line-up
Erik Nilsson
Jakob Berglund
   With
Karl Daniel Lidén: drums
Minna Heimo: pipe organ
Anders Carlström: bass

Description/Reviews
A Swarm of the Sun is a deeply depressive post-metal, atmospheric doom duo from Sweden, and their sophomore album The Rifts brings you all the isolation, cold and melancholy of being trapped in a cabin surrounded by nothing but whiteness, death and frozen silence. If you heard the 2012 debut by Aoria, you’ll have an idea what darkly beautiful unpleasantness awaits, as the bands are similar and both feature vocalist Erik Nilsson. If not, imagine the best parts of Katatonia, Anathema, My Dying Bride and Agalloch all submerged into a minimalist post-metal miasma, so thick not even the faintest ray of hope can penetrate.

Markus Myllykangas - guitar
Jani Rättyä - live percussion

Description/Reviews
Secret Youth draws on the strengths of all stages of the band’s career to find its energies, subtly tempering the heavier parts of their catalog with the more morose sounds found on Providence. The main tool utilized to achieve this goal is the album structure. Its crafted so that harsher, more aggressive tracks are well balanced by the drawn out and haunting melodies Callisto are known for. This is most evident at the album’s beginning where the first quarter sets the tone perfectly.
Opening with the frantic ‘Pale Pretender’, the aggression builds up to the end of the single ‘Backbone’, where the perfect growls are first introduced. Instead of continuing down this spiral of abrasiveness, the guitars are reined in in favor of the rhythm section with ‘Ashes’, a track who’s clean, drawling vocals would fit well on Noir.  Near the end of this track, passages abound which call to mind the band’s quietest album, Providence. Finally, the sound is drawn even lower with ‘The Dead Layer’, a bleak and ambient close to the album’s beginning.

  4. Weakling - 3:17
  5. XE - 18:11
Line-up
Sam Hillmer - tenor sax
Patrick Higgins - guitar, electronics
Greg Fox - percussion

Description/Reviews
Xe opener “The Future of Royalty” begins with a chorus of heavily-syncopated handclaps reminiscent of Steve Reich’s 1972 piece “Clapping Music.” Then, a pulsating guitar line materializes in sheets (as gradually and as ecstatically as a Dustin Wong guitar loop) before everything progressively breaks down into a cacophony of component parts — Higgins’s dripping metal guitar riffs, Hillmer’s astringent saxophone wails, and Fox’s meditative drum fills — until, out of chaos, handclaps return, reinstating brief order. In its framing, “The Future of Royalty” graphs Xe in microcosm, both outlining its overall structure as well as sketching out its sonic limits. From here, Xe ebbs and flows through its established territory, falling in and out of conscious control yet never losing energy, ending on a single percussive sound on closing track “Xe,” just as Xe began/begins.

Line-up
Jim Alfredson - lead vocals, keys, backing vocals
Gary Davenport - bass, Chapman Stick, fretless bass
Kevin DePree - drums, percussion, backing vocals
Jake Reichbart - guitars

Description/Reviews
Formed by world reknown keyboardist Jim Alfredson (organissimo, Dirty Fingers, Janiva Magness, Greg Nagy Band, Root Doctor) THEO harkens back to the keyboard-centric superbands of the 1970s like Yes, Genesis, and Emerson Lake and Palmer, but with a distinctly modern and bold approach.
THEO also represents a return to the concept of the keyboardist as a vital and irreplaceable part of the group, rather than a mere sideman.
Theo intrepid and dynamic music is paired with auspicious lyrical themes of corporatization, consumerism, loss of innocence, exile, and the obsession with celebrity. Lead vocals are handled by Alfredson himself. Usually relegated to background duties, Alfredson‘s surprisingly flexible baritone voice shifts from soaring muscularity to intimate falsetto and everything between.
The eponymous debut album features six tracks including an epic 30 minute opening suite.(prog-sphere.com)

Description/Reviews
“Synchronized” with brilliant melodic riffs & progressive rhythm section & beautiful singing where strong mix clear, AERYON's keys & wonderful band's choir in refrain. This track is so much rebuild and this little hoarse vocal of singer give true charm to these sounds. I love so much these catchy melodies and fine guitar solo with impressive keys. “Sacrifice” with perfect sounds of bass, drums & mysterious keys, amazing refrain with choir of band on the background heavier massive guitars and progressive lines is played in perfectly way.
Potential hit “Fire Eternal” have pulsating drums together with gentle vocal of singer. Then full of strength of melody guitars attacks listener's ears & this catchy sound in wonderful chorus reminds me echoes of Hard Rock of '80. Worth on mention is fabulous guitar solo, which really make goose flesh and strong connection's guys to progression, which is listenable in rhythmical section. This song is very wonderful! Gentle keys, melody keys in EUROPE style, fast drums has IRON MAIDEN influences, fabulous chorus in choir in “Heartless” give true kick-ass, even with beautiful key solo! Oriental echoes with lower riffs in DIO / BLACK SABBATH style are in “Souldrift” where calmer rocking climate in refrain is gorgeous.

Description/Reviews
New band that plays the kind of classic instrumental Italian soundtrack prog that made the likes of e.g. Goblin and Ennio Morricone famous. La Batteria play vintage instruments, but the result is not merely a revival; it`s a projection of the past into the present, in which additional musical elements like cosmic psychedelic, funk, a bit of Afrobeat and even some touches of hiphop in one track are integrated in a very subtle way without losing the traditional feeling of the soundtracks. Also suitable for people who love a lighter version of the music of Anima Morte. (beyondrock.nl)

Description/Reviews
Tracks on the album are loosely knitted around a theme of security and insecurity with the title track: Security Theater actually imagining a theater one can go to to feel safe.
Influences abound on this album, including the first track: Stone Cold Love which features Queen-like guitars and back-up vocals. The song: Biding My Time is very much influenced by Saga whereas the track: Now And Again features Yes-like backing harmonies. For those who love Classic/Art Rock, this release is both refreshingly new and yet familiar at the same time.

Description/Reviews
Even though ‘IV’ is a purely instrumental album, there is a concept behind it. It tells the story of two foxes that need to escape from the forest where they live because of a huge fire. For the band this is a metaphor for their concern with how humanity is destroying the environment and how dangerous humans can be.

The listener is able to experience many extremely different atmospheres and emotional episodes and to appreciate a deep sense of coherence throughout the entire listening experience.
That's why defining Le Folli Arie's style is not a simple task: it could be prog music dressed as pop or the exact opposite...

Description/Reviews
But not only are there no weak tracks, more importantly there are no redundant tracks, which brilliantly corrects my biggest problem with Chapter & Verse. Every song has its own take on the Quiet Child sound, simultaneously fitting into the album wonderfully and standing out as the only track on the album that does that one thing. From the outset we get a vibraphone-led instrumental track (that is a touch long, I must say), and a brilliantly sinister and heavy song in the title track. And they’re the only songs on the album that sound like that. The diversity here is a true characteristic of a band who has found a fully realised vision. This may be slightly behind its predecessor in terms of truly outstanding compositions, but it’s well above in terms of album consistency, flow and diversity.
Although, as I have said, this album does jump around a bit in mood and style, it’s not a genre-hopping mess, all of these songs are songs you could easily imagine Quiet Child writing. The entire album has a unifying thread of dark, sinister moods, which come forward in different flavours throughout. The aforementioned title track is the only real time on this record that Spiker cracks out the Muse influence that was prevalent on Chapter & Verse, and he does it in a way that Matt Bellamy would be truly envious of. Epic opening guitar solo above massive riffs? Done. Dark, moody piano break? It’s there. Enormous vocal line to break into a chorus? Of course. I love the post-apocalyptic vibe that this track has as well, reminding me a lot of short-lived Kiwi group Battle Circus in its tone.
