“Catshot” is the oldest song featured on You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall & Left A Raging Bull as Umphrey’s McGee debuted the instrumental intro live on February 19, 2009 at Variety Workplace in Atlanta. “Leave Me Las Vegas” was premiered less than a month later, while “Tango Mike” was first played in 2010 and 2011 saw the debuts of “Nipple Trix” and “There’s No Crying In Mexico.”

Things settle into a spaced-out jam with heavy, fuzzed-up guitars that punctuate the vocal sections. The vocals themselves are deep and sonorous and so add even more gravitas to proceedings but it is the instrumental passages that really stand out....periods of psychedelically charged heavy rock that give way to more laid back but equally trippy sections in which the guitar is positively mellifluous and oh so lush! This is high class jamming, not just relying on power and histrionics but also craft and subtlety....a surefire winner in my book!

With the opening track, “The Long Way Home,” listeners are treated to an epic 20-minute excursion into the authentic world of a real Hillmen jam. As the whiskey begins to flow, so too do the dreamy synth stylings of Gayle Ellett’s Minimoog. These expressive sounds are supported by Jeff Smith’s powerful basslines, and are backed by the incredible polyrhythmic Jazz drumming of Peter Hillman. On “The Mestizo Insect Frog Jam” listeners literally ride waves of sound as they rise and fall, progressing into the album’s culmination, the energetic and powerful waling guitar solo of Lito Magana Jr. on, “Fire Breather.” 


The traditional-yet-contemporary Hillmen sound is achieved by combining the classic tones of Rhodes electric piano and Minimoog with vintage guitars and amps and state-of-the-art recording technology. It’s the band’s mission to seamlessly blend elements of Jazz, Fusion, Jamband and Psychedelic music from the 1960’s and 1970’s with more modern sensibilities. Experienced enough to know when to lay back and not over play, Hillmen create music that is filled with strong grooves, beautiful melodies and some truly outrageous solos.

Kicking things off in typical fashion with wailing guitars, stellar harmonies and entrancing tempo changes, the album launches into a powerful opener of “Plaese Haalp.” While many have already heard the tune live over the course of the last few months, this time, listeners are introduced to triumphant strings, violins and cellos, helping to create a larger than life sound. Lyricism plays a key role, detailing inner emotions and exploring parallels between time, creating music and giving attention to other avenues in life. Eventually tempo slows down as Winderman’s roaring and impressive vocals take the reigns of explaining their reasoning behind the 2018 hiatus.

The largest thing that sticks out is the repetition of the beginning riffs. Everything starts out simple and gradually builds almost to the point of being out of  control but is as chaotic as can be while remaining clean. In “Protactinium” the basis of the whole song stems from the beginning guitar riff, which is gradually added on to with accents from other instruments, leading up to a finale ripping guitar solo and finally ending with a sudden halt amidst all the disarray while avoiding a sloppy finish.

Cosmic Fall definitely falls in line with this rich tradition of improvised jam band songs that are practically played out more than a premeditated write, record, produce process. This form of progressive/psychedelic rock depends more on all the sum of the parts of the instruments to produce a unified wall of sound instead of the instruments coming in off the hands of virtuoso’s with intricate interchanges in time signatures. It allows for every instrument to both breathe and be heard allowing the listener to decide how they will absorb and digest the individual compositions.

...a five-piece jam band who freely mix elements of progressive rock, jazz, funk and psychedelic moods...  The opening track is the twelve-plus-minute “So It Would Seem” which starts small and slowly begins to build up, with catchy guitar jingles, and the addition of mellotron and synth bass. As far as the construction of “So It Would Seem” goes, it basically follows the jam band standard of pickups and breakdowns.
Perhaps the most diverse song on the record is the trippy “Colossal Cypress” which combines synth keyboard elements with funky world music beats and some bluesy and at times borderline hard rock guitar parts. “Colossal Cypress” also contains one of the heaviest and most raucous jam sessions I’ve heard out of a band in a long time. Without overstepping my boundaries I would say it could be apprentice in musical arrangement to Queen. However much of these arrangements can be lost due to the oftentimes shoddy sounding recording. It sounds like it was recorded live, which contrary to popular belief, doesn’t sound the same as being at a live show.
