Description/Reviews
After a first album ("Electrode") published by Great Winds label / Musea in the year 2008, the singer-guitarist Roland Gassin comes with the project Sphin'x. The band offers music on the border of rock, pop, electro and progressive rock and navigates well between vintage and modern sound. It draws its musical influences in the past four decades, with bands like Pink Floyd, The Who, Tears For Fears, Simple Minds, Porcupine Tree and Phoenix ... It is also necessary to add a "fifth element" - electro programming, present both in studio and concert. The titles are sung in English, they address various topics, such as human relations, underworld, disillusionment, or finding out what have happened to "guitar heroes": an important issue ... Isn't it?

Description/Reviews
Samuel Andreyev’s new album The Tubular West is the culmination of eighteen years of “musical adventure”—a description given by Van Dyke Parks to Andreyev’s 2000 recording Swollows, but which could suitably apply to his entire output, from inventive solo song cycles recorded in living rooms and garages, to avant-garde modern classical compositions commissioned and performed by some of Europe’s most acclaimed ensembles. With The Tubular West, Andreyev reasserts his unique pop sensibility without compromising any of the qualities that have established him as one of the world’s most significant young composers. In fact, this distinctive new recording lies at the intersection of the two main paths of his musical career.

Description/Reviews
The first FilmWorks CD in almost three years (and perhaps the very last in the series) features three radically different musics for solo piano. Commissioned to create music for video installations in Moscow’s Museum of Jewish History, Zorn has responded with a poignant Jewish-tinged score performed here by the virtuosic Israeli pianist Omri Mor. Also included is Rob Burger’s beautiful solo piano performance of Zorn’s landmark composition Beyond the Infinite (from The Goddess) and four rare film cues improvised by Zorn himself for Marc Levin’s documentary Schmatta. An intimate and varied collection of music for solo piano.

Midryasi "Black, Blue and Violet"

Line-up
Convulsion (Throat)
Paul P. (Guitars)
Umberto (Keys)
Sappah (Drums)

Description/Reviews
One of the most appreciated underground bands of the Italian psych-stoner-doom scene, is about to release their new album, the third one. Black Sabbath, Hawkwind, Celtic Frost, Pentagram... Midryasi's most amazing feature is the skill to sound like all of these bands and none of them at the same time and to mix doomy, psychedelic and extreme influences without any fall of coherence nor personality.

In a time when so many bands are rediscovering the sounds and atmosphere of the 70′s heavy and rock vibes, creating an authentic revival of the genre, Midryasi turn over on themselves to produce an album that – while making full use of their handful of influences – is (if possible!) even more varied and personal than the previous ones.
Heavy and dark, psychotic and soft, Black, Blue and Violet is like a sombre and glossy brick left in the hands of the listener. The colors evoked by the seven songs that make up the album are black, blue and violet. Black, as night and the visions evoked by Hole of the Saturday Night; Blue, as the violent fluid feelings of The Counterflow and violet, as the reflections and flares captured by Diagonal.
Once again Midryasi give birth to an album that draws heavily on their Sabbath sources of inspiration, but at the same time does not sound exactly like any of them, giving rise to a new multicolored creature of the crazy saga begun 10 years ago.

Maurizio's sound is a unique mark in legendary film score production, like 70ies and 80ies most acclaimed horror movies, where he performed leaving his unmistakable signature.
The album includes several "flavours", prog, jazz and electronic. Influences from bands like Gentle Giant and Weather Report are clearly recognizable, and compositions are often dressed with a bit of math.

Description/Reviews
Pomegranate Tiger are a Canadian progressive metal band with a very unique name. With their debut album Entities they have carved a similarly unique place in a genre currently dominated by djent, a scene some time accused of being saturated and full of clones that, despite being in a supposed sub-genre of progressive metal, lack progressiveness. Speculation and controversy aside, there is no doubt in my mind that this album represents an already very mature band with their own sound. A sound which, for starters, lacks the modern musical clichés of progressive metal and djent in particular.

Description/Reviews
Long awaited, Zletovsko's first album is based on live recording, added a lot of over dubbing and editing like a Frank Zappa's style. As a result, there is a lot of groove, high-energy music but also sophisticated arrange. Zletovsko’s music style are influenced by classic progressive rock group, such as "This Heat", "U.K.", "Frank Zappa", "Camel", "Gentle Giant", and "Magma". It also has an element of Zeuhl, sophisticated improvisations, and spirits of Rock. There are a lot of irregular time structures and moog sounds, but also their music composed by Horikoshi and Kuwahara are catchy and unique.

Description/Reviews
Spellbinding debut album of Swedish femme psych-folk-rock delight. Top notch song writing and stellar musicianship in a style reminiscent of the masters of the early 1970s; (like Fairport Convention, Pentangle, Mellow Candle, Trees, Comus, Vasthi Bunyan, CSN, Linda Perhacs and others). But yet AnnaMy performs in an unmistakable style all of her own that is both fully rooted in the now and timeless, and ultimately leaves any comparison futile. Full electric band setting with guitars, bass, organ, flute, cello, drums and percussion with Annas crystalline and heartfelt voice soaring on top. Electric guitar duties handled by the grand wizard of the craft; Reine Fiske. The AnnaMy band also consist of musicians from The Amazing, Dungen, Life on Earth!, Lisa o Piu, Anna Järvinen and many more. Every song on her debut album ‘Woodpecker’ came to Anna when she listened to her deepest feelings and each song has its own story. What kind of feelings they might be are up to listeners to feel for themselves.

4.Eigenwelt 21:18

Line-up
Marc-André Mahn - guitar and programming

Description/Reviews
Plastic Violins of Darkness is a one-man army from Leipzig with a self-released debut of atmospheric, stoner infused space rock that, though dark and heavy, escapes gravity and any hints of oppressiveness with a wide-open vista of sounds. Taking leads from 90s electronic ambient and post-industrial music, PVOD also tips its hat to metal without relying on the repetitive riff. Cuts like the cascading Triskaidekaphobia offer up the requisite grind, but going for the patient slow-burn gives PVOD a good dose of enigmatic expanse that keeps it free-floating without taking away from the heft. Full of texture and ‘unavoidable artificial aspects,’ PVOD keeps the journey moving forward and swinging wide without meandering into mopey formlessness. With flight times between 12 and 20+ minutes, it would be easy to veer off into the void and lose your way—and there is much in PVOD to make you feel unanchored and untethered—but our pilot keeps purpose in mind as the tracts of space go by. All build and elongate, some slowly whiplashing back into themselves with a rubbery and fat thickness that gives the listener maximum chewing satisfaction. (mratavist.wordpress.com)

Symphonic in nature, this is an instrumental prog album first and a metal album second. With plenty of synth, warm and clean guitar tones and some middle-eastern themes, it’s difficult to believe that this was written by a minor and not someone’s reclusive uncle.

Description/Reviews
...The solipsistic universe can be divided into two parts: the part controlled by our conscious mind and the part controlled by our unconscious mind. Shant Hagopian is able to combine these two parts dangerously; he understands and respects the fact that music is art, and as art, it should be fun and catchy, many instrumental progressive bands have overlooked this for many years, focusing on technique and speed. Music is not a competition about who is the fastest, my friends; music is emotion, and that’s something that overflows in this album. A definitive must have for those who love instrumental prog metal, perfectly digestible food for not lovers.

Description/Reviews
Curtis Hasselbring’s new album, Number Stations, is inspired by mysterious shortwave radio stations that seem to exist for the purpose of providing foreign agents from a variety of countries coded information.  In a similar way, Hasselbring’s music provides the musicians in this all-star ensemble information regarding their alliances, covert missions and espionage activities via composed music and improvisational stratagems. Fueled by the dual drumming of Ches Smith and Satoshi Takeishi, Hasselbring’s music is highly propulsive while at the same time maintaining elements of dark humor, ambient spaciousness and highly choreographed ensemble playing.

Sub GenreAvant Prog, Zeuhl
LabelCuneiform Records

1. The Pilman Radiant
2. Complex #7
3. Tremors From The Future

Line-up
Dave Smith - drums, percussion
Emmett Elvin - keybords
Kavus Torabi - guitars
James Sedwards - bass

Description/Reviews
Prepare yourself for an experience that’s simultaneously otherworldly and assaultive. On paper, the music of Guapo reads like a riddle – the British quartet’s sound is based around ideas like controlled chaos, atonal harmony, uplifting darkness, and beautiful destruction. Nothing about the band or their work seems to adhere to even the most open-minded set of preconceptions about the meaning of umbrella terms like “rock,” or “progressive,” or even “experimental.” But when you abandon the need to reconcile any of these concepts with each other, and simply let their latest album, History of the Visitation, speak for itself, everything becomes radiantly clear.
History of the Visitation is the ninth album from the forward-looking foursome. The band’s return to Cuneiform finds them following through on the kind of epic constructions that sprung forth from the aforementioned albums. The record is dominated by the 26-minute tour de force “The Pilman Radiant,” offset only by the 11-minute journey “Tremors from the Future” and the considerably more compact sonic sculpture known as “Complex #7.”
In addition to the new studio album, both the CD and LP versions include a live DVD of the group from their 2006 and 2007 USA and European tours. This is the only live footage of the band available to the public and features former member Daniel O'Sullivan.

      Description/Reviews
This is the time when ringtone applicability equals musical quality. This is the place where the greed of being a popstar has replaced the sublime experience of creativity. This is the era in which democracy means mass phenomena, not choices. When we have become too lazy even for subterfuges. And too busy to feel the loss.
This is the age when equality means mediocrity, fame defames excellence, education encourages despondency. We excel in conformity, we celebrate our empty hands. We may not burn books, but we skim them. We may not slaughter heretics, but we overshout them. We strive, long, hunger for nothing, thus nobody strive, long, hunger. Fascistic, yet aimless aposiopetic selves. Timetabled freedom. Death in Bologna. Psychoanorexia.

      Description/Reviews
On Zenit’s 3rd album „The Chandrasekhar Limit“ (69 minutes), Andy Thommen affixes a seal with his distinctive bass play right from the start of the first song (“Awaken”). Later, with the start of the guitar, you will somewhat be reminded of the Clepsydra sound: awesome guitar-bass team play! Here you start with what you expect to get from this brilliant album: quality. The marvelous long tracker “Matrimandir” (17 minutes), brings a breath of oriental sounds in a very subtle but delicate way without being brash, despite the Sanskrit lyrics now and then. One of the best long tracker of recent times clocking around 25 minutes, is “The Daydream Suite” that brings reminiscences of Pink Floyd and all the other stuff a prog suite should have: crazy keyboard solos, melodic guitar lines, cool bass parts and complex choirs, harmoniously in action. The rocking instrumental sound of “Pulsar”, the sweet and sinful ballad “Cub Lady” and the screaming-jazzy “PiGreco” song, jointly make up an impressive and progressive rock album of the 21st century.

      Description/Reviews
Where Afenginn used to have great flippancy, they’ve become more serious, but that’s not a bad thing when faced with something quite demanding. And it’s not all sailing on placid waters. Obscare edges into Stravinsky territory, with lurch rhythms and surprises, with beauty and a hefty stomp, melody and sharp dissonance, moving side by side to a resolution, coming as a stragen, disorienting interlude in the proceedings. Autumnus Elegia lives up to its title, melancholic minor-key piano work from guest Nikolaj Busk in a piece curiously reminiscent of Beethoven without the pomp, then adding gypsy violin, vibes and clarinet to the stew as it morphs into Missa Tripus. It’s an album to delight and astonish, and easily the best of their career, taking them further and further from any pigeonhole? Definitely not Danish, other than most of the musicians, not folk, not jazz, not quite classical. It’s Afenginn music

      Description/Reviews
With one pass through the album, two impressions come to mind. First, as a vocalist, Dufresne sounds like a young Greg Lake. Second, the atmosphere of many of the songs, maybe across the entire recording, reminds of The Moody Blues. Much of this comes from the ethereal, airy, feel created by the combination of piano, synths and acoustic guitar. It also has the additional effect of making the album feel moody (no pun intended), melancholic, and sad.

      Description/Reviews
The Great Deception follows the conceptual idea of a dystopian world, set not far into the future. Drawing on elements from science fiction, the album paints a story of a post-apocalyptic planet that has been torn and shaped by war, corruption and malevolence. Within this ravished world, a single man comes to terms with his surroundings, experiencing new emotions over the course of the album. With each passing song on this 14-track album comes a new message, delivered metaphorically through the struggles of this surviving man.
Imagine if you will, a group of songs so lush in textures, that when you listen, one moment you may think  “Pink Floyd”, and the next you may think “Jeff Beck”.
Combined with those multi-layered sounds, is an unmistakable “groove” that occasionally shows up,  that is nothing less than infectious.
There is a texture in this music, a tone and a depth, that has not been heard in some time.
      Is it Rock ?    Yes.
Is it Progressive ?   Of Course.
But it also has influences of jazz, funk, and at times, even a bit of metal and blues.  So you see, it is a bit hard to pigeon hole it into just one category.
