Description/Reviews
Siinai’s newest release has them tackling the all-too-familiar Grocery Store In-A-Trance Concept Album genre. At first glance, the idea looks like “the-banal-as-art” silliness, and Supermarket almost seems too weird to like. Yet Siinai pulls off a very well-done album. While it’s no The Wall, much of Supermarket sounds a little Pink Floyd-y (especially “Shopping Trance”). It seems Siinai took a few queues from the godfathers of concept albums: layering sounds, building intensity to a climax, and the theme of trying to escape the everyday routine.
Obvious Pink Floyd comparisons aside, it’s tough to ignore the influence of Tool’s foreboding basslines woven throughout Supermarket. The ominous atmosphere created by the Tool sound leaves a spooky cloud over many of the tracks and gives a beautiful, understated air of doom to the album.
