Description/Reviews
After Rational Diet’s experience, Five-Storey Ensemble is born. Several members of the band from Belarus – they shocked the avant-prog world with At Work and On Phenomena and Existences – take part to the project. In an extended line-up, the style of Vitaly Appow and Olga Podgaiskaya, among the main RD composers, is well recognizable. So Not that city is the natural prosecution of a well established course, yet now more spontaneous, melodic, aching: the listener will be surprised by these sound alchemies, able to crystallize the moment, making it magic.

Description/Reviews
Incura’s music is virtually unclassifiable. Genre-hopping across many different styles of hard rock and clearly inspired by the love of theatre, Incura takes you on a thrilling and adventurous ride. Their influences are an impressive, cross-cultural mix of the expected and the unexpected. Savage, crunching metal grooves segue into technical prog-rock prowess; classic rock arrangements nestle alongside the operatic drama inspired by Andrew Lloyd Webber, while Kyle Gruninger's passionate falsetto takes centre stage.

Description/Reviews
"Les Revenants" ("the ones who came back"), a French TV program for which Mogwai provides the soundtrack, is a gorgeously subtle, harrowing drama that explores the reality of loved ones returning from the grave. These "zombies" aren't grisly maniacs hungry for flesh, but humans in their pre-death state who return to their tiny community, a twin town to Twin Peaks nestled in the crook of some mountains and swaddled in perpetual night, as if they'd just popped out for air. The soundtrack album Les Revenants contains not a shred of the terror Mogwai is capable of wreaking, and it works terrifically-- it rarely comes off overly dramatic or leading, and matches the unsettling feel of the show.

Description/Reviews
Zorn’s virtuosic string music is legendary and this CD focuses on his compositions for violin. Two major new works for solo violin—Passagen (based on the legendary B-A-C-H motif) and Ceremonial Magic (which appeared on Rimbaud in a duo realization with drums but here is presented as a virtuoso solo piece); and an enigmatic suite of 12 miniatures for 2 violins entitled Apophthegms. Featuring three incredible young virtuosos: Pauline Kim, David Fulmer and Chris Otto, Lemma is a CD of wildly imaginative string music performed with passion and fiery intensity.

Description/Reviews
What you have are the five full songs and three interludes. All are packed with emotion, with constant dynamic shifts, some inventive song structures, and an array of grooves from across the rock spectrum.
Tempul is typical of the new wave of younger bands that are taking their progressive influences and mixing it with the guitars, energies and melodies of more Indie rock bands to create something fresh, thoughtful and invigorating.
This is an album that rewards a few concentrated listens. As with the debut disc, there are moments that remind me of Fen, Absolace, Dianoya, Disperse, Cloverseeds, Gazpacho, Souljourners, Tides of Man and Abigail's Ghost. (Andy Read at dprp.net)

Description/Reviews
Controtempo were a band from Naples Italy who began working together in 1995, when many Italian bands were experimenting with neo-prog. Indeed the group enjoyed Marillion but also wanted to blend in the luxurious classic sound of favorites like Genesis as well as RPI legends PFM. They were able to record a bunch of tracks in 1998 which were not released until 2013, when Psych Up Melodies rescued them. In 2005 Controtempo went on indefinite hiatus but there may be a chance they'll record again.

The six tracks of the debut range from 5-9 minutes in length and comment nicely on the band's illustrious influences: there is the grandeur of Trick-era Genesis with the 90s sheen of neo-prog, there is the well rounded RPI vibe of PFM and a bit of the diverse spirit of Pino Daniele whom the band were fond of. I love the dual keyboard attack with modern synths and piano side by side ("Gente"), punctuated by a warm pulsing bass guitar, complex, sophisticated drumming, biting yet melodic lead guitar, and romantic vocals. They also have a strummed acoustic behind many busier sections which again, adds to the richness of the sound. The tracks are largely upbeat and sunny, very little in the way of darkness. They are well arranged and have some nice changes to keep things interesting.

"Guerra" has a lovely classic prog progression of songwriting with big and bold themes, capped off with a gorgeous Howe-like guitar solo. There is a frisky folk-pop influence to "Jesce O Sole" and a crossover appeal to "Tiempo" that reminded me of Moongarden. The nearly 10 minute "Nun Dicere Niente" attempts a more dramatic and ambitious feel, with plenty of emotional variation, and varying sections like a suite. In the middle it stops and begins again very slowly and deliberately, each musician playing with great thoughtfulness and gelling wonderfully with each other. Good stuff. The closer "Vierno Vene" throws a lounge-ish curveball that sounds like a prog version of the Love Boat theme song-this is the only track that fell short (and way short) for me. It sports a relaxing vibe with some nice guitar work all the same.

This is a surprisingly solid album that snuck up on me after repeated plays, despite my tendencies to be disappointed by many 90s bands. For an "underground" band they are well recorded, they are excellent musicians, and the songwriting should have wide appeal to prog (excluding those who like it dark, metal, or avant influenced). Sophomore album from north Swedish crossover prog trio Dynamo Bliss. Beatlesque melodies, complex chord progressions, tight vocal harmonies, banjos, zithers and a few experiments. "Last year we started recording what has crystallized into two separate albums of songs. We're releasing the first one of these now - a lighter set named "Poplar Music". Lighter because the songs are generally in a digestible shorter 'progressive pop' format."

Description/Reviews
While the group stays true to their roots there seems to be an overt emphasis on creating a more psychedelic sounding record. There is an odd fuzziness to each of the eleven tracks, a sense of exploration and improvisation pervades nearly every crevice of the album, utilization of obscure instruments ..., and of course the heavy use of keyboards and synthesizers. If this album was any more Psych it would come with packets of LSD and a Grateful Dead T-Shirt.

Under the artistic direction of Fabio Zuffanti and Rossano Villa, Luca’s ideas are enhanced with lush arrangements ranging from symphonic prog to psychedelia, hard-Crimson atmospheres, with touches of ethnic and fusion music.
The result is an album diverse and peculiar, where is easy to lose your bearings for the many subtleties and peculiarities that surprise the listener in this labyrinthine path. This is original and sophisticated instrumental music.

Description/Reviews
Terra Tenebrosa translates to “Dark Earth” or “Dark Land,” and so “The Purging” would be… well it’s us. Humanity. This is an album about the purging of all of the life on earth... No, this isn’t some folk-like dark trippy hippy shit, this is Avant-Garde rooted in the abyssopelagic* Black Metal, mixing in the weapons of Dark Ambient, Post-Black and Sludge. This isn’t just black metal, this is conceptual black metal, and they’ll use anything they can to immerse you in their world, descending you into the dark reality of a systematic xenocide of humanity.

Description/Reviews
Called to compose the original soundtrack, KOVLO begin to imagine and create new sounds while reading the script. They discover the story of three young people that life puts to a severe test: can they achieve self-awareness, and still nurture that sacred flame which makes them feel alive? It is a massive challenge, which each must face alone between dreams and fears, successes and defeats.
For the band this time it doesn’t mean to build musical movements meant only to be listened, but to compose multiple and different soundscapes, starting from a common atmosphere that creates new themes, emotions and meanings emerging from the movie. KOVLO are stimulated by the director to compose joyful and happy music, able to express the desire of life from the youngsters, but also to compose melancholic and alienated tunes, able to express the lost childhood and the difficulties of growing up and fit in society.
Many songs are played, arranged and recorded while the movie sequences are projected in front of the band, and will converge directly in the soundtrack. Other songs are rebuilt and rearranged thinking at the album. The final result is a musical journey able to tell stories and emotions to the listener.

One of the most formidable fretless electric bassists in the post-Jaco era, Texas native and current Barcelona resident Gary Willis joins forces with Catalan keyboardist Albert Bover and Budapest-born drummer Gergo Borlai on this exhilarating take on the electric piano trio. Willis and his crew shift deftly from slamming funk to percolating fusion to aggressive swingers while embracing quiet ballads with uncommon sensitivity and a lyrical touch. They also turn in impressive interpretations of 'Norwegian Wood' and Bill Evans' 'We Will Meet Again'.

-The Curator / Vocals
-Aphotic Mote / Rhythm Guitars
-Ignis Fatuus / Drums
-Omenous Fugue / Bass

Description/Reviews
Let me be clear — Portal has not become normal. Vexovoid, like every album the band has ever made, is a hellscape in audio, a truly scary answer to death metal’s typically schlocky approach to darkness and evil. But there’s a reason “Curtain” premiered on Pitchfork and “The Back Wards” premiered on NPR. By marrying the relatively conventional but roughly produced Seepia with the deliberately off-putting weirdness of Outre and Swarth, the Curator and his fellow emissaries have stumbled upon the perfect blueprint for a Portal record. Listenable enough to show your friends; demented enough to give them nightmares.

Eight Bells "The Captain's Daughter"

Release dateFebruary 19, 2013
Tracklist
1. Tributaries (3:50)
2. Fate and Technology (7:20)

4. Yellowed Wallpaper (7:10)

Line-up
Melynda Jackson - guitar, contact mic, vocals
Haley Westeiner - bass, vocals
Chris Van Huffel - drums

Description/Reviews
Things start off innocuously enough with “Tributaries,” the album’s shortest and probably most ‘accessible’ track. The opening riff sounds a lot like the kind of riff one would expect from an instrumental metal band—kind of post-rock a la Pelican, but with a bit of a cacophonous black metal twist—it’s energetic and doesn’t prepare the listener at all for what’s about to come. Then at about the 50 second mark things switch up completely and the drums fall back and the guitar and either an overdubbed second guitar or more likely the bass do this interesting and quite lovely melody/counter-melody thing that lasts for about a minute, and then all hell breaks loose and changes start coming so quickly it would be folly to try to catalog them all.  All totaled. The song is less than four minutes long and covers more territory than most bands do on an entire album, and that’s just the opener.

While its predecessor provided solid evidence of the comprehensive breadth of styles and textures in their arsenal, Last Chapter of Dreaming documents an intrepid leap forward for this young, vibrant band. With it's unique blend of inventive, balls-to-the-wall rock, unpretentious, from-the-heart jazz, and emotionally-charged blues (and even a hint of bittersweet, melodic Eastern European folk), this fabulous effort serves notice, in no uncertain terms, that Marbin are a band that has clearly arrived.
