Description/Reviews:
The music on The Shadow Vol I and Vol II is influenced by both the more experimental hard rock of the seventies, like Ginger Baker’s Airforce and King Crimson, and the meditative and contemplative vibe represented by the works of jazz artists Alice Coltrane and Pharoah Sanders in the late seventies. The music on the albums is also influence by more modern progressive rock and heavy rock represented by bands like The Mars Volta, Clutch and Queens of the Stone Age. The Tronosonic Experience has taken new steps forward on The Shadow Vol I and Vol II. The form and structure of the compositions still digs deep into heavy rock, and saxophonist Ole Jørgen Bardal and guitarist Øyvind Nypan’s soloing create new dimensions to the music by reveling in an uninhibited jazzy abandon. Drummer Jango Nilsen and bassist Per Harald Ottesen lay down a solid foundation for the soloing, and take part in the collective improvisations that are happening on the albums. The intuitive interplay between the band members is evident on the new albums. The heavy weather conditions of the north-western coast of Norway, where The Shadow Vol I and Vol II were recorded mid-winter, is also evident in the music. The Shadow Vol I and Vol II are quite dynamic records, with sonic parts that varies from the explosive outburst of aggressive sound one can hear on the albums opening tracks Sheik and The Shadow of the new Praetorians, to the more quiet, lyrical tracks Totak and Chiaroscuro.
