Alessandro Di Benedetti (Mad Crayon)

Description/Reviews
Atmospheres, Melodies, Nuances, Details: four ingredients for a solitary path of musings.

While working with Mad Crayon on a new album inspired by Magritte paintings, Alessandro has taken music material from that work plus brand new music composed for the occasion, and re-elaborated the structures and the arrangiaments, to give the music all new level of expression. So from Mad Crayon forthcoming "Waiting for the Murderer" comes "Bloody Lips", and from "Sputnik" comes "Sputnik Eclipse". And so on. For this project Alessandro has used only digital instruments, all electronic, with no vocals at all, and he has chosen a longer format for each song, to give a longer breath to all the melodies and themes along the album.

Description/Reviews
An album where all their different experiences (from heavy metal to symphonic music, from street standards to free experimentation) collides connecting within themselves for then to start all over again. Because, in order to preserve something, it is necessary to go forward in circles but always looking backwards. Abstract searching (“Gĉod”) or unbridled rage (“Crows are Council”) always go hand in hand with keynotes and the right tempo (“Thimble Capp”, “Chalybs”), even if they are not to be played.
A record co-released by Knockturne Records and Clamshell which makes it clear that there is life beyond Orthodox, and where improvisation and structured dark chaos are created mixing elements from free jazz instrumentation with extractions from heavy metal and contemporary music.

Description/Reviews
This album follows the story of the Lykov family, who lived isolated in the Russian wilderness for over 40 years before their discovery by geologists in 1978.
The album opens with lovely choral vocals, there are cellos, percussion, even banjos! Of course it soars with lots of emotional welling and release, building up into great volume before easing into quieter sections led by piano or cello. But great care is taken to make the melody and force of each track match the chapter of the story. The story is not told in the traditional lyrical method but by the music. Thus one has to read a bit about the family's story and then the song titles and the music make sense. "Silence of Siberia" is a slow piano meditation that would fit onto an Eno album. "The Hungry Years" introduces the banjo which works surprisingly well in his style, imparting the rural challenged of the family's struggle against the elements, as well as the rustic beauty.

Description/Reviews
Grey Skies Fallen can be anything they want, whether it be post-prog, experimental black metal, doom/death or even funeral doom. They even attempted a more modern sound here, which doesn’t work so well for me as I’ve mentioned. Regardless of all that, the band show that they’ve got an incredible amount of talent and enough experience to pull off something groundbreaking. As long as they leave the modern stuff alone. If you can find this album, definitely give these guys a shot. You might really be surprised and that’s enough for me to recommend it.

VK Lynne - vocals
Kelly LeMieux - bass

Description/Reviews
The album kicks off with ‘StOrk’ and instantly VK gets to show off her impressive vocal talents! It’s a catchy song with some great phrasing and as you would expect some impressive playing from all members of the band.
The second track, ‘Pillow Person’, has a slightly darker vibe to it and a tom groove from Thomas interspersed with some fast bass drum flurries. The interplay halfway through between the three instrumentalists is fantastic!
The next track is one of my favourites on the album, called ‘Bat’.
It features a really great guitar riff and the drums instantly reminded me of the first section of Thomas’ book/DVD combo ‘Creative Coordination & Advanced Foot Technique’. I think it’s also one of the more ‘commercial sounding’ tracks on the album as well.

Description/Reviews
Imagine, if you will, Jeff Buckley jamming with Can, and you’ll have a fair gist of the fantastic voyage that awaits the armies of the Spirit Knife: an album that finds JIRM rekindling their time-traveling communion with vintage psychedelia and Krautrock, while expanding on the sonic palette revealed by the ensemble’s past full-lengths, Elefanta and Bloom.

Once again, but more powerfully than ever before, JIRM, deliver imposing passages of torrential guitars that rattle and roll, shimmy and soar with oceanic reverb and sweaty rock and roll, partnering with thrumming keys and mesmerizing Motorik drums to incite cyclical hypnosis for protracted song-suites, ever teetering between tight instrumental control and loose vibes to achieve optimal tantric tension and release through music.

Description/Reviews
SMBH brand themselves as ‘progressive death metal’, though that’s a far too limiting label, since over the course of the album, they showcase a hugely diverse array of genres and influences on their creative palate. Although they have a distinctly avant-garde feel to their music, with elements of jazz, blues, folk, space rock, djent and way more, the songs aren’t lost in pretense or over-ambitiousness; they just rock, and do it well. The album has a total ‘fuck yeah!’ quality to it, packed with thrashy percussion, triumphant and kick-ass riffs, and even a vocalist that sounds as if Jamey Jasta fronted a techdeath band. The technical skill on display is remarkable, well-rehearsed, and though a little sloppy, each musician shares great chemistry and each brings one their own influences to the record.

Description/Reviews

Musically the album is heavy, angular at times but retains a very good sensibility of melody which is an important factor. The soundstage and production, which was done in house by Francesco Salvadeo, is outstanding where every contribution is heard with full clarity, no ego tripping, every musical nuance playing out with precision. The more you play Italic the more you get from it, each layer stripping itself back, revealing itself for you to absorb. The album is akimbo with stunning time signatures that keep you guessing, grabbing you by the scruff of the neck and taking you along on its journey.

Description/Reviews
In the grand tradition of high concept progressive rock comes an epic cross-media hybrid where cerebral science fiction meets visceral rock ‘n’ roll. Sontaag’s eponymous debut album has been described as ‘the rock opera that Pink Floyd never wrote’, ‘a modern-day Tubular Bells’, ‘a prog-rock War Of The Worlds’, but no reference point or sound-bite nails its seamless combination of space rock, narrative spoken word, and evocative ambience quite as neatly as ‘sonic cinema’. Recorded in New York City and London, co-produced and mixed by Youth for Big Life Management, ‘Sontaag’ is a stunning and immersive listening experience. An evolutionary progression combining cutting edge sounds with classic dynamics, adapting the rock experience for today’s digital environment.
Arriving in a landscape where music, books and movies often co-exist on a single handheld device, ‘Sontaag’ represents a seamless fusion of the finest elements of all three.

Description/Reviews
A German guitarist, that makes instrumental guitar-dominated prog / rock with additional elements of Ozric Tentacles-like spacerock and electronic music in Tangerine Dream vein. Inspired by ultralong runs through the swiss and french mountains, driven by the fascination about a green drink and his history. The mystic green fairy was an inspiration to make a concept-album like this.

Description/Reviews
Electronic music is a whole universe, with its cities, landscapes and oceans. This double album catches glimpses of this vastness, building jazzy improvisations at the heart of the first album's tracks, and lingering on soundscapes and atmospheres on the next one, with incursions into progressive rock, berlin school sequences, abstract minimalism, oriental instrumentations with the koto and the electronic Udu, even some reggae, and many more.

Description/Reviews
‘Progstrumetal: The Annals of 2014’ ... speaks of a musician who has matured, and who wants to share what those three or four years have given to him... Ten tracks – the album is only 48.41 minutes in length.  And again, Gordon’s skills as a multi-instrumentalist are to be heard. .. ‘Progstrumetal’ overall is fresh; it doesn’t outstay its welcome; it doesn’t show off (needlessly); it doesn’t get self-indulgent.  It’s short, sharp, sometimes bitter and sweet, like a fine cocktail.  And, like all good cocktails, it is over too soon and lingers in the right way.

Federico Mele - drums

Description/Review
It's one of those rare prog metal gems that don't abuse the "metal" part of their monicker without losing any of their edge.
That's not to say it lacks distortion: far from it. It doesn't even include atypical instruments: just the four classic rock instruments with a singer. But the arrangement variation is so rich, especially on the bass section that - without trying to undermine the work of the other instrumentalists - this is an album that every prog metal bass player should listen. This should be no surprise, since both lyrics and music are credited to bassist Marcelo Pérez Schneider, who also handles the keyboards.
On that note, I should also highlight the poetry contained within the lyrics. A lot of prog metal is based around complex, grandiose stories, and in most cases it's OK, but nothing more. There's none of that here, every track takes on a different theme with very rich metaphors. I don't usually mention the words in my reviews because the music frequently takes all the praise (or the critique). Unfortunately, those that don't have a good grasp of Spanish will miss out on this, which is a shame.

Andrew Milios - Drums
Nick Pogkas - Bass
Lefteris Kapetanios - Keyboars

Description/Reviews
False Coda’s trademarks are heavy, harmonically inventive chords, knockout jazz fusion-inspired guitar lines, inventive rhythms and, in what maybe sets this band apart from other progressive style bands, some pretty goddamn great melodic hooks. CLOSER TO THE EDGE’s got its own musical identity and is the result of the progressive evolution that Dream Theater Psychotic Waltz and Fates Warning have been undertaken since over two decades and ever after.
Let’s take a closer look at the album’s content and context. The album is very well thought out – with just the right mixture of heaviness and lightness. Clean vocals and heavy guitar riffs and melodic tunes everywhere. The middle of the album has a large portion of powerful “near power metal” touches. There are also quiet reflective moments throughout the entire album that might be kind of risky in less skilled hands but to me are the perfect offset to the heavier and more intense parts. I have to say that I do like very much the Deep Purple-laden parts in keyboards “Room of Panic” and the great “Paranoid’s” riff in “Blood On Eyes”.

Description/Reviews
Brückner/Everling duet, with the complicity of Cäcilia Brückner on voices, offers an album which caresses all the spheres of a modern EM with a lively music, sometimes very near the IDM and electronica with just what it needs of ambiences to draw some fascinating cinematographic faces. A surprising sonic journey that will leave you more than perplex.

Michael Aggelos Kouropoulos - Guitars
Kimon Zeliotis - Guitars
Timoleon Valsamakis - Drums

Description/Reviews
Through their music Psycrence attempt to combine the aggressiveness and heavy sound of 7 string guitars with melody and atmosphere. Influenced as they are by Dream Theater, Symphony X and Pink Floyd, they write music infused with progressive elements but which, at the same time, remains focused and direct.
Let’s concentrate on the album now, the first track is A Losing Game and begins with a melodic metal staple of piano and synth overlaying a light guitar, very nice and measured, then a crashing but calculated riff hoves into view to give some meat on the bones. The vocals kick in and, my, what impressive vocals they are, powerful and full of heart and soul, the guitars carry on riffing the hell out of everything and the drums are mean and moody, add in a suitably catchy chorus and we have some archetypal melodic power metal going on here, perhaps with a bit more added decorum. There is nothing out of the ordinary here but, there is definitely something hiding just out of reach that gives you pause and, as opening tracks on a debut album go, this leaves you wanting and expecting more!

The opener "Ra Me Nivar" starts softly, with spacey ambient sounds. Then the rhythm takes off and the music swings from hard rock and funky to a soft, jazzy finale while the lyrics conjure up images and colours from the outer space such as stardust falling upon silent altars, strange spectral synthesis based upon celestial mechanics, threatening black holes devouring everything around them, colliding worlds breaking through the doors of perception...

Description/Reviews
For almost thirty years, Mekong Delta have enjoyed an excellent reputation as an independent and exceptionally creative band in the world of progressive metal sounds. Albums such as The Music Of Eric Zann (1988) and Pictures At An Exhibition (1997) are considered classics of their kind. With their blend of prog metal, classical elements and thrash, the musicians are considered pioneers of a stylistic mix which has been emulated by a considerable number of epigones. Now the German quartet is set to unleash its latest recording:
The band has recorded a total of eight songs for In A Mirror Darkly, among them three instrumental numbers like the ingenious Inside The Outside Of The Inside with its diverse arrangements. Typically Mekong Delta, the new numbers all have a playing time of between five and seven minutes. As far as I am concerned, that s just the right time frame to gain sufficient stylistic depth without pushing the envelope or creating artistic ambiguities, band founder Ralf Hubert explains the initial parameters of the new album. I feel that we ve once again found the right mix of complexity and uninterrupted leitmotiv.
Thematically, the new recording will pick up where our 2010 release Wanderer On The Edge Of Time left off, although the new material is more loosely connected and only occasionally linked by little interludes. (from amazon)
